Ajinkya Rahane shocked after being told about Rohit Sharma's retirement in press conference: 'Is it? I thought he...'
'I'm actually shocked. I didn't know that he retired in the Test format. But I just want to wish him the best,' Rahane said at the Eden Gardens, visibly caught off-guard.
Rohit, 38, took to Instagram on Wednesday evening to confirm that he was stepping away from the longest format of the game with immediate effect. His decision came just a day after India's national selectors met to discuss the leadership group for the upcoming tour of England, a series that will mark Team India's return to international cricket after the IPL.
Rahane, a long-time teammate of Rohit for both India and Mumbai, was informed of the news by reporters. 'Oh, is it? I just want to wish him the best. I thought he has done fantastically well in the Test format. I didn't know (about the retirement),' he repeated, still processing the announcement. Watch Rahane's reaction:
The veteran batter praised Rohit's journey in red-ball cricket, highlighting his successful transition from middle-order batsman to attacking opener.
'Whatever his plans are, he has done really well, improved his game, as a Test batter. He started his career 5-6 number and then opened the innings,' Rahane said.
'I thought the way he adapted to that opening slot was amazing to see. He always wanted to take on the bowlers, play with freedom. And that's what he wanted other players to do as well, play with freedom.'
Rohit retires with 4,301 Test runs in 67 matches, averaging 40.57 with 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His bold approach at the top, especially in home conditions, helped redefine India's strategy post-2019, with his standout knock of 127 in the 2021 Oval Test marking a high point in his overseas red-ball career.
While Rohit has already bid adieu to T20Is after leading India to a World Cup title last year, he will continue to be available for ODIs and the IPL.

Varun eyes senior team return through Europe tour with India 'A'
Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist defender Varun Kumar is eyeing a comeback to the Indian men's hockey team with some good performances with the India 'A' squad in the upcoming tour of Europe. Varun, a potent defender, failed to make the Paris Olympics squad, and has been out of the the senior side for over a year. He was last seen in India colours during the friendly match against Germany in New Delhi in June last year. The dragflicker has set his sights on next month's Asia Cup to be held in Rajgir to make his comeback, and is aware that a good outing in the Europe tour will help his case. "Certainly, my personal goal is to return to the senior team. But more important for me right now is to improve my game. Not having played a proper tour in over one-and-a-half years, it is a long time and the game is constantly changing. The structure has changed and it has also become much faster. The way I am looking at it, is to start fresh," said Varun. "Missing out on the Paris Olympics was painful. I know I was in the reckoning to make the squad but now, I have left the past behind and ready to start fresh with this opportunity to play for India 'A'," added the dragflicker, who was also part of India's junior World Cup-winning team in 2016. "Playing the European teams, who are preparing for the Euro Cup will be quite exciting and challenging. It will be a learning experience for me and I know a good show here will count, especially with the Asia Cup coming up in India." The India 'A' team led by Sanjay will play two matches each against Ireland, France, and the Netherlands along with a match each against England and Belgium starting July 8. The matches will be held in Eindhoven and Amstelveen in the Netherlands and the match against Belgium will be played in Antwerp. "Personally, for me, it has been a tough road back into the core probable group. Last 7-8 months I have worked a lot on my fitness and also mentally, it has been extremely challenging," Varun said. "Returning to form has not been easy but I am really grateful to my family, teammates and coaching staff who have stood with me in tough times and constantly kept motivating me." The India 'A' team will leave for Amsterdam on Friday night from here.

India's task cut out in ‘knockout' tie vs Thailand
"Tomorrow's game is not only about us qualifying for the AFC," Crispin Chettri said on the eve of their crucial winner-takes-all game against twice World Cup-finalists Thailand on Saturday. "It will be massive not only for women's football but for everyone related to football in India. It will be like a ray of hope," the Indian women's head coach told TOI from Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Friday. With the Indian men's team languishing on last spot in their respective group of the AFC qualifiers, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Manolo Marquez's successor at the senior national team's helm, and the general dismay regarding the future of Indian football among its followers, qualifying for the AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers 2026 could be a small ray of hope for the country. While the last meeting between the sides ended in a 0-1 defeat for the Indian women at 2023 Asian Games, the Group B clash is billed to be one between equals, given the recent form of the both sides who have amassed the same number of wins, goals, points and an identical goal difference of +22 after three games at the qualifying leg at 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium. India have romped to the top of the group with an 11-0 demolition of Mongolia, a 4-0 cruise against Timor Leste and a dominant 5-0 win over Iraq. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3.5, 4.5 BHK Homes starting at ₹4.89 Cr.* Hero Homes Learn More Undo On the other hand, the world No. 46 Thailand, needing 12 goals over Mongolia to beat Chettri's team to the coveted ticket to Australia, scored identical 11 goals to make Saturday's fixture a knockout match. With penalties to play decider if the winner isn't decided in the 90 minutes, India would like their firepower of Manisha Kalyan, Sangita Basfore, India's topscorer Pyari Xaxa and tournament revelation Priyadarshini Selladurai to wrap things up in regulation time. Basfore and Anju Tamang are the two players who were part of India's 2023 Asian Games squad that tasted defeat against Thailand and will be eager to turn things around, especially for teammate Soumya Guguloth, whose injury in the Iraq game will keep her out of the decider. Chettri, however, is impressed with the women's show so far, especially in the background of limited resources available in their journey, vis-a-vis the men's team. "As a coach, I am already proud of these players irrespective of the result (on Saturday). The amount of hard work and challenges they have faced to reach here is incredible. For me, in sports, there are no failures. We just keep learning and growing as a team," he signed off.
