The Alters review: Surviving a space disaster with a little help from your selves
Warsaw-based 11-Bit Studios has a pedigree in morally challenging survival games that present difficult choices to the player. You never could save everyone in titles such as 2015's This War of Mine or 2019's Frostpunk – the task was as stark as deciding who would live and who would die.
In The Alters, you're trying to save yourself, an unremarkable space miner named Jan Dolski – the only one left alive of a mission by a vaguely shady corporation to locate a coveted rare element called rapidium that can speed up organic growth. Alone after his ship's catastrophic crash-landing, he realises there's no way he can survive without help even after finding his way to the crew's empty base on the planet.
However, Dolski is also running from his past, and possibly his present and future too. Back on Earth, he left behind an ex-wife, regrets about how he dealt with his drunken father, and guilt about his late mother. If only life could bestow a chance to put things right…?
After long-distance conversations with his corporate handler, Dolski learns that his shot at escaping the planet rests on cloning himself using rapidium – but each copy pulls from a different potential outcome in his life. Maybe the one who'd quit university to focus on an apprenticeship. Or the Jan who became at botanist at his wife's suggestion. Or the guy who got a PhD and became a scientist.
The Alters layers this character drama with resource-gathering on the planet surface, a task always mindful of the ticking clock of radiation damage and a hazy threat from alien anomalies. You might spend the equivalent of several daytime hours mining rocks for components to build and then pass the evening teasing out the overarching issues with the clones – the alternate versions of Jan with contrasting abilities but not always agreeable viewpoints.
It makes for an interesting game loop, overcoming the hostile environments outside and then negotiating with the others inside as you expand the base and draw on their knowledge to solve problems. Although the outside busywork can get a bit tedious, the game hangs together thanks in no small part to the remarkable performance by British actor Alex Jordan who invests Jan and his multiple Alters with distinct personalities.
Just like life itself, there are myriad ways in which Dolski's story can branch, depending on which Alters he awakens. This lends an innate replayability to his story that overcomes the repetitiveness of the gameplay. Who could resist a do-over of a second chance in your life story?
The Alters artfully balances the time pressures of Dolski's physical tasks with the emotional toll of managing the clones, a responsibility made all the heavier given that you're trying to rescue not just yourself but all your selves. Maybe living one life might easier after all…

Suzanne Harrington: Can we leave the Coldplay couple alone now?
Are you mean? Not with money — although that sucks too — but towards others? We live, says author Stuart Jeffries in his brilliant forthcoming book on stupidity, in an age of 'spitegeist'. That is 'where joy in others' misfortune and in others' displays of ignorance is addictive'. Not since public executions in the town square have we been so united in our delighted spite, thanks to the speed and power of the internet. Shazam. We are all shrieking with laughter at your misfortune, in a town square gone global. The spitegeist is schadenfreude on steroids. You've slipped on a spectacularly stupid banana skin and we are crowding over you, gurning and hooting like gibbons. Hang on, though. Shouldn't we have evolved out of this by now? Not a chance. You'd think that Coldplay kiss cam couple had been caught killing kittens, or committing war crimes, the way we reacted. With hilarity, yes — not only was their reaction comedic (for us, not them), but it happened at a Coldplay concert. Ha ha ha ha. Double awful. But the spitegeist kept going, and destroyed the framework of their lives, despite no kittens having been killed, no war crimes committed. Adultery, yes, but these two were private citizens and this global town square was not Jeddah or Kabul or the 14th century — so why the tarring and feathering, the public drubbing? The moralising, the high-horsing? I'm not standing up for individuals cheating on their partners or families — come on — but for their right to be awful without the entire internet gathering pitchforks, and their company (now a household name — should the hapless Coldplay kiss cam couple invoice them for publicity services?) going turbo-puritanical on their ass. Since when does the corporate world, perpetually prepped to prostitute its own granny for profit, have the right to moralise about anything? Ever? In a country run by an elected racist rapist? Do me a favour. Similar spitegeisting happened to that New York-based, South African-born PR woman who in 2013 tweeted: 'Going to Africa. Hope I don't get Aids. Just kidding. I'm white!' Twelve stupid words to her 170 followers retweeted to a journalist with 15,000 followers equalled spitegeist multiplied by n — when she disembarked in Cape Town 11 hours later, she'd been fired from her job, internationally reviled, shamed as a crass, clueless racist. A modern monster. Trending worldwide as she turned her phone on, to tweets like: 'We are about to watch this @_____ bitch get fired. In REAL time. Before she even KNOWS she's getting fired.' In Jon Ronson's 2015 book So You've Been Publicly Shamed, the woman said she was not being racist, but highlighting an Aids situation nobody in the US bothered to think about: 'Living in America puts us in a bubble when it comes to what is going on in the world. I was making fun of that bubble.' The internet — which veers between South Park levels of humour and flaming pitchforks — missed the nuance. 'If I don't start making steps to reclaim my identity and remind myself of who I am on a daily basis, then I might lose myself,' she told Ronson. She did eventually recover from being spitegeisted — in that she's still alive, still working. Unlike Caroline Flack. Just a thought, but maybe we could redirect our spitegeist energy more productively towards the actively spiteful — the Trumps, the Tommy Robinsons, the public haters and dividers, the actual war criminals? And leave the ordinary idiots alone?

Spice Girl Mel B celebrates marriage with 'spiritual' ceremony in Morocco
Spice Girls star Mel B has celebrated her marriage with a "spiritual" ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco. It comes after the 50-year-old, whose real name is Melanie Brown, married hairdresser Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral in July, having announced their engagement in October 2022. In a post on Instagram, Brown said: "We got married, again! "A wedding so good we keep the celebration going with our closest and dearest in our fave place at @selmanmarrakech we had the time of our lives." The singer wore a red dress with crystals and bugle beads made in a collaboration between Evelie Bridal and wedding dress designer Justin Alexander at the ceremony at the Selman Hotel on Saturday. Her choice of dress was guided by Caroline Black from London-based Evelie Bridal, who aimed to reflect her life in the US, where she is a judge on America's Got Talent. Black told the PA news agency: "For Mel's Morocco wedding dress, we focused on trying Justin Alexander gowns with a little extra sparkle. "Mel loved the idea of a red dress - something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer - but it also had to feel light and easy to move in. "We drew inspiration from a variety of dresses she tried on at Evelie South Kensington, then went back and forth brainstorming with Justin Alexander and his design team. "After several conversations and sketches, the first design took shape. Mel gave us clear feedback on what she liked and what she didn't, and the final result was beautiful. "Mel had such a strong sense of what she wanted - it was a joy working with her and Justin Alexander to bring her vision to life." The dress required a team of six artisans and took more than 850 hours to complete. Her husband wore an Alexander McQueen outfit featuring a white shirt and jacket with black trousers and shoes. The London wedding saw Brown joined by guests including bandmate Emma Bunton, model Daisy Lowe, and comedians Tom Allen and Katherine Ryan. The singer was previously married to Stephen Belafonte until she filed for divorce in 2017 following allegations of abuse. They have a daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte. Brown also has two daughters, Phoenix Chi Gulzar and Angel Iris Murphy Brown, from two previous relationships. With the Spice Girls, the singer had nine UK number one singles and two UK number one albums. The group was best known for songs such as Wannabe, 2 Become 1, and Who Do You Think You Are?.
