AAP suspends Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh from party for 5 years
AMRITSAR: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reportedly suspended Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, the MLA from the Amritsar North Assembly constituency, for five years for alleged anti-party activities.
The decision to suspend Kunwar was made by the party's Political Affairs Committee, reportedly in response to his alleged opposition to the arrest of
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a case related to the accumulation of disproportionate assets.
Kunwar, the former IPS officer who joined politics, was not inducted into the Cabinet since the formation of the govt by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and previously also expressed dissent against the party on a couple of occasions.
Following his suspension, he uploaded a verse of Gurbani on his X account: "ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਰਨੇ ਤੇ ਜਗੁ ਡਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦ." (Kabir, from death everyone in the world is afraid; but to me, my mind feels bliss).
Following the news of his suspension, a large number of Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh's followers and sympathisers gathered at his residence, said

, a close aide, adding that the party's decision was unjust and excessively harsh.
During the 2022 Assembly elections, Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh secured 58,133 votes, defeating SAD candidate Anil Joshi, BJP's Sukhminder Singh Pintu, Congress party's Sunil Dutta, and others.
Former Inspector General of Police Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh once headed the Special Investigative Team (SIT) probing Bargari and other sacrilege incidents in Punjab.
Sources informed that if Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh is not reinstated and allowed to continue working in the Amritsar North constituency, several other aspirants are prepared to step in.
A few leaders have already already approached senior party leaders on Sunday, expressing their interest in replacing him.
Sources infomred that at least two prominent figures—one from within AAP—are said to be eyeing the Amritsar North seat for the upcoming Assembly elections. There are also rumours that a current opposition leader may join the party and be positioned as Kunwar's replacement.

Originally from Bihar's Gopalganj district, Singh has had several feathers in his cap. In April 2007, Singh became Amritsar's Senior Superintendent of Police and served in that position till October 2009. He became Deputy Inspector General of Police in April 2015 and Inspector General of Police in April 2019. In 2021, Singh resigned from his IPS job and entered politics. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party and in 2022, Singh won from Amritsar North constituency and became part of the Punjab's state assembly. He defeated Congress' sitting MLA Sunil Datti. Singh has earned Masters of Arts in Sanskrit from Patna University and in Political Science from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He did his PhD in Police Administration from Amritsar's Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) and has also done bachelors in law (LLB) from Punjab University, followed by an MBA from IGNOU. Most recently, Singh earned a diploma in French language from GNDU. According to Singh's website, he is also an Advocate with the Punjab and Haryana high court. Singh was the chief of the Special Investigation Team formed to investigate the firing incidents in Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan in 2015, which originated from the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The report filed by Singh in the Haryana and Punjab high court shook the state government at the time headed by Captain Amarinder Singh. However, the report was rejected by the high court which called it politically motivated. Singh' wife, Madhumita, passed away last year and he has two daughters. What did Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh say? On June 25, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh shared a video of the Vigilance Bureau's raid on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia's house. In the video, Majithia's wife Ganieve Kaur, who is the SAD MLA from Majitha constituency, is seen protesting the highhandedness of the bureau officials for barging into her house. Sharing the video, Singh wrote, 'When Majithia ji was in jail in 2022, the Bhagwant Mann-led government neither conducted any interrogation nor sought his remand and eventually allowed him bail.' 'The dignity of a family is shared by all — whether one is a politician, actor, rich or poor, friend or foe. Conducting a raid at someone's house early in the morning is against ethical principles. Almost every government has misused the police and vigilance agencies for its own benefit, but the outcome has never been significant,' he added. 'I may have political disagreements or ideological differences with someone, but when it comes to principles, religion, and integrity — it becomes necessary to speak out. When Majithia Sahib was in jail in a case registered during the Congress government, the Mann government did not seek any remand or conduct any questioning. Later, the state apparatus under Mann sahib even facilitated his bail.' 'The Punjab and Haryana high court granted bail (to Majithia) on grounds that if the police don't require someone for interrogation, keeping them in custody is against the law. My point is that when he was in custody, the government enabled his bail, and now suddenly, notices are being issued to him, raids are being conducted at his house, and the dignity of his wife is being violated. It is important to mention here that I have an ideological disagreement with Majithia sahib — and that remains. But this is a matter of ethics and integrity.'

AAP hits the streets over slum demolition drives, threatens mass agitation
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday launched the 'Ghar Rozgar Bachao Andolan (Save homes, jobs movement)' at Jantar Mantar with a protest against the ongoing demolition drives in slum clusters in the city. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal accused the ruling BJP of betraying slum dwellers and urged Delhi's 40 lakh slum dwellers not to fall for 'Modi ki guarantee' again. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kejriwal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan (Where there's a jhuggi, there will be a house)' before the Delhi Assembly election, but delivered the opposite. 'What he really meant was 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Maidan (Where there is a jhuggi, there will be barren land)'. They've thrown the poor into boiling oil and left them to die,' he said, calling the Prime Minister's guarantees 'fake and hollow'. Mr. Kejriwal also said the BJP government would not complete its five-year term if they continue to demolish slums. Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai warned the BJP that the poor will occupy the 'Prime Minister's residence if slums are demolished without providing alternative housing', adding that there would be mass agitation if the demolition drives don't stop. Arora likely to be inducted into Mann-led cabinet
Aam Aadmi Party 's new poster boy, Sanjeev Arora , who won the Ludhiana West by-election , is likely to make his entry in the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Cabinet as the party sets its house in order in the state. Mann will shuffle his Cabinet this week as two berths have been vacant. The chief minister is expected to make inductions, relieve some ministers of their current charge and assign new portfolios. According to sources, 62-year-old Arora is likely to be inducted and given a heavy portfolio. A businessperson and Rajya Sabha member, Arora is internally recognised for introduction of the Punjab government's land pooling scheme and the newly-formulated 'Fast-Track Punjab', a long-standing demand of industry owners. A Ludhiana-based industrialist, who did not wish to be named, told ET that the by-election victory should not be seen as a win for AAP, but a confidence vote for Sanjeev Arora. "He is a trusted name in Punjab as he understands what industry owners need for ease of doing business and has their support," the person said. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had announced during the Ludhiana West bypoll campaign that Arora, when elected, would be inducted in the Cabinet. Arora is the chairperson and managing director of Ritesh Properties and Industries Ltd. , a group of 18 firms with offices across India. Though he started out as a garment manufacturer in Ludhiana, he is now involved in real estate, housing, and industrial and commercial sectors. Sources said Kejriwal could entrust him with the industries portfolio.
