This Unexpected Spot Just Won Britain's Most Beautiful Pub Title
Lovingly restored by owner Fuller's, the pub impressed judges with its architectural charm, deep community roots, and respectful refurbishment. It was toasted as one of "the most visually stunning, historically significant and lovingly restored pubs across the UK."
Built in 1909 by architect T.H. Nowell Parr, The Forester is a classic example of Edwardian design, featuring columned porticoes, green-glazed brickwork, and gabled roofs. Inside, it retains original bar counters, Tudor-arched bar-backs, tiled fireplaces, and even remnants of gas lighting. One saloon room boasts London's only surviving bell-pushes once used for waiter service, still marked with the word 'BELL'. The Art Nouveau stained glass adds a layer of elegance, while the former publican's office remains at the heart of the servery.
After a brief closure, The Forester reopened in March 2024 following a sensitive restoration. Its rear lounge now serves popular Thai cuisine, blending heritage with modern hospitality.
Andrew Davison, chairman of the Pub Design Awards judging panel, praised the winners for their dedication to preserving Britain's pub culture. Speaking to The Mirror, he said, "The Pub Design Awards recognise the highest standards of pub architecture, rewarding artistic flair and painstaking historical conservation."
He added, "From inviting street-corner locals to striking medieval coaching inns, there are some stunning pubs in the UK. The craftsmanship involved in making these venues a gorgeous place to enjoy cask beer and real cider or perry should rightfully be applauded. I encourage heritage enthusiasts and pub lovers alike to visit these inspirational buildings."
Other winners at the 2025 Pub Design Awards included:
Bod Lichfield in Stratford, which won Best New Build for its "industrial chic" aesthetic, featuring recycled wood, distressed paintwork, and exposed ceiling pipes.
Swan in Suffolk, recipient of the Historic England Conservation Award, recognised for preserving original features.
B orough Beer House in Surrey and the now-closed Python's Arms in Lyonshall, Herefordshire, were joint winners in the Conversion to Pub Use category.

Cambodia's growth prospects for 2025, 2026 remain steady: Govt
Cambodia's growth prospects for this year and the next remain steady—5.2 per cent in 2025 and 5 per cent in 2026—backed by resilient performance across key sectors despite moderating economic momentum, according to the latest outlook by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The projections in the ministry's Macroeconomic Situation and Outlook for 2025 and 2026 report are in line with the Medium-Term Fiscal Framework (2026-2028) published in May this year. Agriculture, garment manufacturing, non-garment manufacturing, tourism and related services, wholesale and retail trade, and the construction and real estate sectors will drive the country's growth. Cambodia's Ministry of Economy and Finance has projected a GDP growth of 5.2 per cent in 2025 and 5 per cent in 2026, backed by resilient performance across key sectors despite moderating economic momentum. Agriculture, garment manufacturing, non-garment manufacturing, tourism and related services, wholesale and retail trade, and the construction and real estate sectors will drive the growth. The garment sector has seen strong growth in the first half this year, before easing in the latter half as US reciprocal tariffs take effect. Non-garment manufacturing will maintain positive momentum, although industries catering to the domestic market may also face a slowdown in the second half due to countervailing duties. Wholesale and retail trade remain on an upward trajectory, though weaker purchasing power is beginning to weigh on sales volumes, according to the government report. The construction and real estate sector is gradually recovering, with activity driven by high-end residential projects and industrial facilities. However, growth remains subdued compared to pre-pandemic peaks. Key risks include trade disruptions, tariffs and emerging regional tensions. One of the most pressing challenges is the 19-per cent tariff rate affecting the private sector, particularly factories and enterprises. The report emphasises the need for urgent measures to help businesses diversify export markets beyond their heavy reliance on the United States, while simultaneously strengthening competitiveness and enhancing the industrial value chain. Compounding the challenge is the continued closure of the Cambodia-Thailand land border, which has disrupted the flow of goods and production materials to industries dependent on the Thai market, domestic media outlets reported. ASIA RICE-Vietnam rates rise on Philippine stockpiling; India prices steady
* ASIA RICE-Vietnam rates rise on Philippine stockpiling; India prices steady Philippines will suspend rice imports for 60 days from Sept 1 * Weather conducive for paddy crop, Mumbai-based dealer says * Demand for Thai rice remains quiet, trader says Aug 14 - Vietnamese rice prices rose this week as buyers in the Philippines stockpiled ahead of an import suspension deadline, while Indian rates held steady near a three-year low. Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at $395 a metric ton on Thursday, up from $391 a week ago. Traders said buyers from the Philippines are rushing to make purchases before the country suspends rice imports for 60 days starting September 1, as the government seeks to protect local farmers affected by falling prices during the harvest season. Traders also said that Vietnam's domestic supplies were running low as the summer-autumn harvest ends. India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $369 to $374 a ton, unchanged from the previous week when it hit its lowest level since August 2022, while Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $360 to $368 a ton this week. "The weather is largely conducive for paddy crop, this year's production is expected to be even higher than last year's record harvest," said a Mumbai-based dealer. Thailand's 5% broken rice tumbled to $355 to $360 a ton, down from last week's price of $370 on weakening demand, traders said. Domestic and overseas demand has been very quiet, with buyers anticipating increased supply in the market, which could drive prices even lower, another Thai trader said. Meanwhile in Bangladesh, prices continue to remain high despite renewed imports and record harvests since November last year, which pushed reserves to nearly 2 million tons by July. Data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh showed prices remained 15 to 20% higher compared with the previous year. China urges Thailand, Cambodia reconciliation in three-way talks
China expressed support for Thailand and Cambodia in resolving their border dispute on Thursday (August 14, 2025) and offered to provide assistance based on the wishes of both nations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. Mr. Wang said China supports the Southeast Asian countries in strengthening dialogue and eliminating misunderstandings, adding he hoped they would rebuild mutual trust and restore friendship, according to statements from his Ministry. He met his Thai and Cambodian counterparts separately during the day but also convened a three-way conversation on the sidelines of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in China's southwestern Yunnan province, readouts of the three meetings showed. In their "friendly and candid communication", Mr. Wang said China hoped that the two countries could reopen border crossings as soon as possible, a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said. China also promised support and assistance for landmine clearance in the border areas of Cambodia and Thailand, and the three ministers agreed to continue communication in a "flexible manner", the Chinese statement added. Thailand and Cambodia have wrangled for decades over border territory and a border conflict erupted last month after the killing of a Cambodian soldier in a skirmish late in May. It was the worst fighting in more than a decade and only eased after a ceasefire was struck in late July. In a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Maris, Mr. Wang spoke about China's readiness to accelerate a China-Thailand railway construction project, encourage more investments from Chinese enterprises in Thailand and ensure the stability of the regional production and supply chain. It is hoped that Thailand will provide more policy support and facilitation for Chinese enterprises, he told his Thai counterpart. While meeting with Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Mr. Wang sounded support for Cambodia maintaining political stability, and said China is appreciative of the country's crackdown on online gambling and wire fraud. He also expressed hopes that Cambodia will continue strong measures for joint efforts in the region against cross-border criminal activities.
