KUALA LUMPUR (July 10): The United States (US) is laying diplomatic groundwork for President Donald Trump's potential appearance at the 47th Asean Summit in October.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US administration is currently working on finalising the date for Trump's participation in the high-level meeting, which will be hosted in Kuala Lumpur.
'We are working on getting a date for that (Trump's attendance), absolutely,' Rubio told reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday when asked whether it was possible for Trump to join regional leaders at the Asean Summit.
Rubio is in the Malaysian capital to attend Asean high-level meetings held in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), hosted by Malaysia under its Asean Chairmanship for 2025.
The 13th Asean-US Summit will also be held in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit in October.
The last US President to attend the Asean-US Summit in Kuala Lumpur was Barack Obama in November 2015. – Bernama asean Rubio summit trump us

Exclusive-Military options for Ukraine developed and will be presented to Western national security advisers

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump greets Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy upon his arrival at the White House, amid negotiations to end the Russian war in Ukraine, in Washington, D.C., U.S., August 18, 2025. REUTERS/Alexander Drago/File Photo (Reuters) -Military chiefs from the United States and a number of European countries have completed military options on Ukraine and will now present the options to their respective national security advisers, the U.S. military said on Thursday. Reuters has previously reported that U.S. and European military planners have begun exploring post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine, following President Donald Trump's pledge to help protect the country under any deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine. "These options will be presented to each nation's respective national security advisers for appropriate consideration in ongoing diplomatic efforts," a U.S. military statement said. The meetings between the chiefs of defense for the United States, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and Ukraine took place in Washington, D.C., between Tuesday and Thursday. Reuters was first to report on the completion of the plans that will be presented to the national security advisers. Ukraine and its European allies have been buoyed by Trump's promise during a summit on Monday of security guarantees for Kyiv, but many questions remain unanswered. Officials have cautioned that it would take time for U.S. and European planners to determine what would be both militarily feasible and acceptable to the Kremlin. One option was sending European forces to Ukraine but putting the U.S. in charge of their command and control, sources have told Reuters. Russia's Foreign Ministry has ruled out the deployment of troops from NATO countries to help secure a peace deal. Trump has publicly ruled out deploying U.S. troops in Ukraine but on Tuesday appeared to leave the door open to other U.S. military involvement. U.S. air support could come in a variety of ways, including providing more air defense systems to Ukraine and enforcing a no-fly zone with U.S. fighter jets. Trump has pressed for a quick end to Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, and Kyiv and its allies have worried he could seek to force an agreement on Russia's terms after the president last week rolled out the red carpet for Putin. Russia says it is engaged in a 'special military operation' in Ukraine to protect its national security, claiming NATO's eastward expansion and Western military support for Ukraine pose existential threats. Kyiv and its Western allies say the invasion is an imperial-style land grab. (Reporting by Idrees Ali in Toronto; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama and Lisa Shumaker)

Increasing retirement age will balance with providing opportunities for youth

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry has assured that any review of the retirement age will strike a balance between retaining an experienced workforce and creating opportunities for the younger generation. Its minister Steven Sim said several factors must be taken into account in developing a long-term framework, including Malaysians' rising life expectancy, the health and productivity levels of older workers, national labour demand, and the youth unemployment rate. "The Ministry also considers the long-term impact on youth employment, ensuring that any policy change will not add further pressure to the national labour market. "The main focus is to maintain a balance between retaining experienced workers and providing opportunities for the younger generation to secure jobs suited to their qualifications," he said in a written parliamentary reply. Sim said the retirement age set under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 is 60, which represents the minimum age at which an employee may retire. "However, the Act does not prevent employers from hiring workers above the age of 60 or extending their employment," he said. He was responding to Riduan Rubin (Independent–Tenom), who asked about the empirical rationale and long-term policy framework behind the ministry's review of the retirement age, to ensure it does not increase pressure on youth employment opportunities or leave a highly educated younger generation without suitable jobs. On May 23, Sim said the issue of retirement age is among 28 labour laws under the purview of the ministry currently undergoing review, reforms and updates. He said the matter was being considered carefully, taking into account the suitability of any changes in the Malaysian context, as there are both pros and cons to raising the retirement age.

Bumiputera empowerment continues in 13MP with needs-based poverty eradication

KUALA LUMPUR: The bumiputera socio-economic empowerment agenda outlined in the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 continues to be emphasised in the 13th Malaysia Plan. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan stated this effort ensures that no one is marginalised during the 13MP implementation period. 'In principle, the government has always abided by what is enshrined in the Constitution, as emphasis is given to bumiputeras and this will always be safeguarded,' he said when winding up the debate on the 13MP motion in the Dewan Rakyat today. Amir Hamzah, who also carries out the duties and functions of the Economy Minister, stressed that poverty affects all regardless of ethnicity or religion. He confirmed the government will continue to eradicate poverty regardless of ethnicity through comprehensive measures. 'The bumiputera affirmative agenda will continue to be safeguarded as enshrined in the Constitution, and poverty will be addressed in line with the implementation of needs-based policies,' he added. The government remains committed to intensifying comprehensive development based on multiple dimensions to create equitable opportunities. This approach aims to increase social mobility and the well-being of the rakyat through needs-based assistance. 'This effort will benefit all target groups in need, including bumiputera, Orang Asli, Sabahans, Sarawak bumiputera, as well as the Indian and Chinese communities,' he concluded. – Bernama
