Max Verstappen celebrates becoming a father by taking pole position at the Miami Grand Prix ahead of Lando Norris - as Lewis Hamilton endures nightmare qualifying

Daily Mail03-05-2025

Max Verstappen is the daddy on and off the track. Having become a father for the first time a few days before, he took pole for the Miami Grand Prix.
The Dutchman arrived in Florida late after his girlfriend Kelly Piquet gave birth to baby Lily, but he put sentiment aside to pip McLaren's Lando Norris by six-hundredths of a second.
'Becoming a dad has not slowed me down,' smiled Verstappen. 'I never listened to these silly things. I just do my thing.
'There have been enough drivers who have been champions after becoming dads. I don't know where the idea comes from.'
Norris can take a positive out of yesterday after winning the sprint race earlier in the afternoon with the help of a timely safety car, which put him ahead of team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri.
And in qualifying for today's main event – for which rain is on the radar – Piastri was only fourth fastest, as he defends a nine-point advantage. Mercedes' teenager Kimi Antonelli split the two McLarens.
Lewis Hamilton endured another depressing session. The seven-time world champion was eliminated in Q2 for the first time in his six-race Ferrari career, and will start 12th.

‘He's going to call it a day' – Ex-Red Bull mechanic claims Max Verstappen will quit F1 THIS YEAR

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MAX VERSTAPPEN has been sensationally tipped to QUIT Red Bull at the end of the season by a former team mechanic. The Dutchman has won four drivers' titles in a row and is hunting for a fifth this year - which would see him match a feat only achieved by Michael Schumacher in Formula One history. Verstappen has continued winning races despite the issues and even the power struggle which hit the team last year. He has been linked with an exit from the Racing Bulls, with a team transfer to the likes of Mercedes or Aston Martin. But ex-Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas believes Verstappen - who became a dad for the first time last month - could QUIT F1 entirely, if he wins a fifth World Drivers Championship. He gave his answer before revealing what he thought lay ahead for the 27-year-old. Nicolas said: "Five. I think Max is going to win the Drivers' this year, and then I think he's going to call it a day." Despite his answer, the mechanic insisted he didn't "know anything" extra about Verstappen's career plans. "Not in terms of just his technical skill and his talent, but I've watched Max grow into this guy that can do everything. Lewis Hamilton hit with grid penalty at Monaco Grand Prix after blunder saw him forced to apologise to Verstappen "He does everything well now." Verstappen's last race win this season came at the Imola Grand Prix on May 18. He finished fourth at the Monaco Grand Prix a week later before inexplicably ramming his car into George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix. That earned him a 10-second penalty - demoting him from P5 to P10 - and three penalty points on his licence to put him on the brink of a race ban. Verstappen has 11 out of 12 points needed to earn a race ban across the 12-month rolling system for the penalty points. He will need to be on his best behaviour at the Canadian and Austrian Grand Prix to avoid a ban in the following race before he sees two penalty points expire on June 30. SunSport looked at five potential replacements for Verstappen if he is banned from competing for one weekend. Names include impressive F1 rookie Isack Hadjar, Red Bull flop Liam Lawson and F2 prodigy Arvid Lindblad, who recently raced against Leeds United stars on the Elland Road pitch.

Man Utd reject approach for £36.5m star but sanction major transfer exit

Manchester United have rejected an approach for Joshua Zirkzee while sanctioning another player's departure from Old Trafford, according to reports in Italy. United spent £36.5m to sign Zirkzee from Bologna last summer but the Netherlands international endured an underwhelming first season in the Premier League. Zirzkee contributed just three goals in the Premier League and found himself out of the team after being subbed off in the 33rd minute of United's defeat to Newcastle at the end of December. A large section of Manchester United supporters booed Zirkzee as he made his way off the pitch and the incident felt like the beginning of the end of the 24-year-old's spell at the club. But Zirkzee did offer some promising signs towards the end of the campaign and has seemingly done enough to earn at least one more season at Old Trafford. The forward was heavily linked with a move away from United earlier in the year but Old Trafford bosses have rejected an approach from Inter Milan to sign the Dutchman. Corriere dello Sport say Inter initially approached Manchester United in the hope of bringing both Zirzkee and Rasmus Hojlund to Serie A. But United rejected the chance to offload Zirzkee while setting out their terms for Hojlund's departure from the Theatre of Dreams. Like Zirzkee, Hojlund also endured a miserable season in front of goal, scoring four Premier League goals. The Denmark international recently dismissed speculation he could leave Manchester United this summer but Gazzetta dello Sport say he is privately keen to join Inter Milan. 'I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United. I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. 'As I've told you before, I try to stay away from all that, because it's both for better and for worse these days. 'I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. 'I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season.' Speaking to Danish news outlet Ekstra Bladet Hojlund's representatives have held positive talks with the Champions League finalists and United have indicated he is free to leave on a permanent transfer. Manchester United are not interested in loaning Hojlund out next season unless there is an obligation to make the move permanent in 12 months' time for around €45 (£38m). Ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes United should 'get rid' of both Hojlund and Zirkzee, claiming neither are at the level needed to play for the Red Devils. 'United want to get to the top of the Premier League and into the Champions League,' he said. 'Is Zirkzee a player who gets you there? Not for me, he isn't. 'I don't think Hojlund has that striker quality required for the Premier League either. He's a hard worker but not the source of goals they desperately need.' Hojlund and Zirkzee's struggles have led Manchester United to target a new No. 9 this summer. Ruben Amorim was keen to welcome Liam Delap to Manchester before Chelsea won the transfer race and is interested in his former Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres. But perhaps there is a more to come from Zirzkee, who can develop into a 'superstar' for the Premier League giants, according to Old Trafford hero Lee Sharpe. More Trending 'I like Zirkzee – he was unfortunate to get injured when he did, but he's a real baller and I think he can be a superstar for Manchester United if he can get games under his belt,' Sharpe told Metro via Coin Poker. 'He needs a regular run. I don't think he's had a 10-game stint where he has actually played week in, week out. 'There were reports that he wasn't quite fit when he signed, so it took him a bit of time to get up to speed. 'I think he was just finding his feet when he got injured but I think he's going to prove a real key player next season.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Man City signing immediately in disagreement with team-mate after £46m transfer

Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Manchester City this week in time for the Club World Cup, but the Dutchman disagrees with his new team-mates due to his views on the revamped tournament Incoming Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders has already entered into a disagreement with one of his new team-mates before his move has even completed. Reijnders is set to undergo his medical in the early part of this week. City have agreed a £46million fee with AC Milan for Reijnders to move to the Etihad Stadium. Should he pass his medical, Reijnders should become a City player in time to feature in the Club World Cup. ‌ The controversial tournament kicks off on Sunday when Al-Ahly face Inter Miami. City's campaign gets underway next Wednesday when they face Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia. ‌ They then take on UAE's Al-Ain in Atlanta on 23 June and Serie A giants Juventus in Orlando on 26 June in the group stages. They should make it through to the knockouts, with some tipping them to reach the final, which will take place on 13 July. Reijnders is eyeing the tournament as the perfect way to bed into his new club. The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Netherlands and admitted he is relishing the chance to make the move. He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The medical tests? I couldn't wait any longer. The intention is to participate in the Club World Cup with City. I'm excited about it. "This way I can get to know my new teammates straight away. I'll return to Zeist on Sunday evening. Then I'll prepare for Tuesday's match against Malta." It's safe to say that not everyone is looking forward to the revamped tournament though. City have already played 57 games this season across the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup. ‌ With as many as seven more games still to play, then less than a month between the final and the new season kicking off, Reijnders' soon-to-be team-mate Manuel Akanji has insisted that the Club World Cup is needed about as much as a hole in the head. "I have been a strong critic of this competition for some time now. We players would love to have some holidays, and some time for our bodies to rest. My City teammates are not exactly overjoyed about the tournament either," he said recently. "But it's now right in our faces, and there is nothing we can do about it. If we take part, then of course we want to win it. But if we reach the final, then the time period for us to recover ahead of the new season will become even shorter. ‌ "Set against the expectations we have, this hasn't been a good season. We finished third in the Premier League, three points behind Arsenal, and qualified for the Champions League. "But it is still our worst campaign for some time. However, Pep Guardiola still said he was proud of us for never giving up. The season could have finished far worse than it did."
