Israeli attacks kill at least 33 Palestinians in Gaza on May 3
GAZA CITY (BERNAMA-ANADOLU): At least 33 Palestinians were killed and scores wounded Saturday (May 3) in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing health sources.
Israel targeted homes and infrastructure in assaults that have continued in the coastal enclave.
Those killed and injured included in the Batn al-Samin area of Khan Younis and Jabalia.
Additional attacks claimed 10 lives in the Bureij refugee camp, eight in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, five in Beit Lahia and one in Kizan al-Najjar.
The Israeli army renewed its assault on Gaza on March 18, shattering a Jan 19 ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas.
More than 52,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children. - Bernama-Anadolu

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump ramped up pressure on the US central bank Wednesday, calling for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to step down – after his recent criticism of Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not lowering interest rates sooner. "Cook must resign, now!!!" The US leader's targeting of Cook, who sits on the Fed's rate-setting committee, comes after his repeated broadsides against Powell while the central bank kept the benchmark lending rate unchanged this year. On Tuesday night, Trump again called for a "major rate cut," saying there was "no inflation" and claiming that the Fed's policymaking was harming the housing industry due to elevated mortgage rates. He called Powell "a disaster" in a social media post. Although the US consumer price index, a key inflation gauge, was steady at 2.7 per cent in July, it remains higher than it was a few months earlier. Fed officials have been trying to ensure inflation is kept in check – despite the effects of Trump's sweeping tariffs – while balancing risks to the labor market as they mull the right time for further rate cuts. Cook took office as a Fed governor in May 2022 and was reappointed to the board in September 2023. She was sworn in later that same month for a term ending in 2038. She has previously served on the Council of Economic Advisers under former president Barack Obama. Earlier this year, Trump suggested that what he called an overly costly renovation of the Fed's headquarters could be a reason to oust Powell, before backing off the threat. UNIFIL, Lebanese army discover Hezbollah tunnels in S. Lebanon
BEIRUT, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese army discovered two Hezbollah military tunnels in separate areas of southern Lebanon on Wednesday, according to Lebanese sources. UNIFIL peacekeepers found a 50-meter-long tunnel and unexploded munitions near the town of Al-Qusayr during a field operation coordinated with the Lebanese army, UNIFIL said in a statement, adding that all findings were handed to the Lebanese army in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. In a separate incident, a source from the Lebanese army told Xinhua that the army discovered another Hezbollah tunnel on Litani River banks, west of the village of Deir Mimas, and that army engineering units are clearing the tunnel in preparation for its detonation at a later time. Meanwhile, Lebanon's official National News Agency reported that Israeli forces on Wednesday fired four illumination shells into the Hermon area opposite the villages of Yaroun and Rmeish in the Bint Jbeil district, aiming to ignite fires in the area. Since Nov. 27, 2024, a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel has formally been in effect, ending more than a year of cross-border clashes. The agreement stipulated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Israeli army has maintained several posts along the border and continues to launch attacks, citing "threats" from Hezbollah. On Monday, the Israeli army reportedly established a new military post in the border region of southern Lebanon.

Jordan FM says Israel killing all prospects for regional peace
MOSCOW: Jordan's foreign minister declared on Wednesday that Israel's military assault on Gaza has resulted in massacres and widespread starvation while systematically destroying any possibility for regional peace. His statement followed Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz authorising plans to capture Gaza City, a densely populated urban area housing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the northern part of the territory. The United Nations confirms that most of Gaza's population has been displaced since the conflict began, with many families forced to relocate multiple times. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi addressed Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during their Moscow meeting by expressing hope to discuss efforts to end the aggression on Gaza, and the massacres and starvation that it is creating.
