Aaron Rodgers Wins 'Hostage' Negotiations With Steelers
Aaron Rodgers Wins 'Hostage' Negotiations With Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Rodgers promised all along that he wasn't holding the Pittsburgh Steelers hostage. But with Thursday's decision to sign with the team seemingly forced only be the looming deadline of next week's mandatory minicamp, it certainly feels like it. Advertisement Rodgers is finally agreeing to not only play football in 2025, but apparently to do it with the Steelers. He is reportedly signing a one-year contract that could be worth as much as $30 million. So here's the $30 million question that will hang over Pittsburgh all season: Was he worth the wait? Is late better than never? Did Mike Tomlin and Art Rooney II make a mistake is selling their soul to a 41-year-old quarterback whose only Super Bowl win came 14 seasons ago? Rodgers has kept the Steeler in limbo - if not hostage - since mid-March, for three long months. He became the logical, lone quarterback option when Russell Wilson signed with the New York Giants in free agency and Justin Fields left for the New York Jets. Without him, the Steelers were left to begin OTAs with an underwhelming mix of rookie Will Howard and veteran journeymen Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. With him, they are ... Super Bowl contenders? Advertisement NFL oddsmakers reacted to the signing, modestly moving the Steelers from a 45-to-1 longshot win the championship down to 40-to-1. While the fantasy football dream of Rodgers throwing passes to new receiver DK Metcalf might re-boot Pittsburgh's fan base, he arrives with a cautionary tale. Last year at this time the Jets were also in "Super Bowl-or-bust" mode thanks to Rodgers. Then we bolted to Egypt during minicamp and played mediocre at best during a 1-4 start that got both his head coach and general manager fired. The Jets finished 5-12, let Rodgers walk with zero compensation and ... here we are. The man claiming not to be holding the Steelers hostage got what he wanted, exactly when he wanted it. Justin Fields and Aaron Rodgers will play each other in Week 1 whenever the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets face off.
Justin Fields and Aaron Rodgers will play each other in Week 1 whenever the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets face off. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has finally made a decision on where he will play in 2025, as he informed the Pittsburgh Steelers that he intends to come on over and sign with the team ahead of mandatory minicamp. Advertisement This means that in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season, he will match up against his former team in the New York Jets. And funny enough, they also have a brand new player under center in New York. ... and it's an old Pittsburgh pal. The Steelers and the Jets basically swapped quarterback situations, as Rodgers will be suiting up in the black and gold, and Justin Fields will be under center for New York. And adding to the fun? As players, they couldn't be any more different. Rodgers at 41 is fading, but he is an established name in the NFL, as he is known by many as one of the best quarterbacks in league history. He has won a Super Bowl, as well as four Most Valuable Player Awards. Advertisement Fields, 26, is to a great degree the opposite, as he will be looking to prove with the Jets that there is a reason he was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has not found much success in his first few seasons in the league, and he will be hoping he can change that in 2025. So ... revenge, anyone? The two will face off in Week 1 of the regular season, and both will be looking to prove that their respective teams made the right decision signing them in free agency this offseason. Steelers Corner Cory Trice Jr. Taking Strides at OTAs
Steelers Corner Cory Trice Jr. Taking Strides at OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers have benefited from first-round picks on the offensive line and veteran stalwarts on the defensive line. At cornerback, though, the Steelers have relied largely on unproven talents at corner. Advertisement Second-round corner Joey Porter Jr. has been penciled in atop the depth chart. Behind him, Pittsburgh is searching for answers. It signed Super Bowl champion Darius Slay early in free agency and added fringe starter Brandin Echols. In the slot, Beanie Bishop Jr. will hope to entrench himself as a starter after flashing as a rookie. One wild card in the secondary is developmental corner Cory Trice Jr., who, according to Mark Kaboly, is taking strides at the Steelers' organized team activities (OTAs). "You know who I wanna bring up is Cory Trice, too. He's a guy that if he can just stay healthy, I think has a very legit opportunity to be that DB two next year," Kaboly said. "He could be the long-term answer next to Joey Porter. My goodness does he just look the part. He's looking faster, quicker, he's looking more comfortable. But the injuries just tend to pile up on the guy. If he stays healthy, he has a chance to be a guy that not only helps this team out this year, but long-term in the future." Trice, a 2023 seventh-round pick, saw his hype cut short by a torn ACL in his rookie season. He made his debut in 2024, playing in six games while logging an interception and two passes defended. Advertisement Trice played well in his limited action a season ago, but the small sample size wasn't enough to lock in a starting role. He'll have to play himself into Pittsburgh's plans this summer, and it seems like it is going well thus far. To his credit, Trice's upside lends itself to multiple chances. At 6-3, 206 with adequate speed and impressive explosiveness metrics, Trice is a playmaker who may be on the verge of earning a starting job. He'd have to leapfrog Slay, barring injury, so Kaboly's expectations are measured. But if Pittsburgh needs reinforcement on the boundary, expecting Trice to be more than a replacement-level player seems increasingly reasonable.
