Leadership award for social activist Pandurang Hegde
Renowned environmentalist and social activist Pandurang Hegde was conferred the inaugural M P Veerendra Kumar National Thought Leadership award for his work in forest conservation and community-based environmental activism.
The award was presented by water conservationist Magsaysay award winner Dr Rajendra Singh at an event commemorating the fifth death anniversary of the writer, politician, and former CMD of Mathrubhumi, M P Veerendra Kumar.
The honour carries a citation, plaque, and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, which Hedge announced he was sharing with the members of Prakurti, an environmental organisation in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada.

Tungabhadra dam to get new crest gate at 19th sluice gate

Only the 19th gate will be constructed in Gadag, while Tungabhadra Board officials are considering starting work on the remaining 32 gates near the Tungabhadra Reservoir. Currently, the construction of the 19th gate is in progress and is expected to be installed by the end of June, according to sources from the board. In this regard, Tungabhadra Board secretary ORK Reddy, superintendent engineer Narayan Nayak, and officers Nagaraj, Chandrashekhar, Gyaneshwar, and Raghavendra visited the construction site of the gate to inspect the progress. Tungabhadra Board officials directed the company representatives to ensure that the gate is constructed according to the specified design and installed promptly.

Water for 10k JSR residents by '26
1 2 3 Jamshedpur: Around 10,000 people, living in the eastern fringes of Jamshedpur, would receive piped water by 2026 end as work on the second phase of the Moharda drinking water supply project would begin soon, officials said on Thursday. In the second phase expected to incur a cost of Rs 7.77 cr, two overhead water storage tanks, with a capacity of 2.4 lakh litres and 1.25 lakh litres respectively, would be built at Bhuvaneshwari Temple in Telco and old GSR in Birsanagar. A nine-kilometre pipeline would supply water to the residential areas. Laying the foundation stone for the project at Sugana Colony in Baridih, Jamshedpur (East) MLA Purnima Sahu said, "The project would end the longstanding problem of water scarcity in colonies and slums." Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) deputy municipal commissioner Krishna Kumar said, "The colonies and slums in Bagunhatu, Baridih, and Birsanagar will receive piped water. New connections have been added after the service area was expanded." A total of 5,000 new tap connections were given and 3,700 illegal connections regularised between 2021 and 2023. Presently, over 15,000 houses receive water from the Moharda project. Over 2 lakh people will get tap water upon completion of the Rs 30 crore project being implemented Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd.

State has target to raise green cover by 17% by 2028: Minister

"Bihar is not only a land of historical heritage but also environmentally rich. Animal parks like Patna zoo serve as major centres of awareness," he said, adding that initiatives like the Hariyali Mission, Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali and 'Ek ghanta paryavaran ke naam' have engaged all sections of society. He recalled the PM's 'Ek ped maa ke naam' initiative and appealed to people to participate in the environment's protection by planting saplings in the name of their kin. On this occasion, the department's additional chief secretary, Harjot Kaur Bamhrah, stated that environment's protection is possible not only through govt's efforts but also through people's cooperation.
