
Tungabhadra dam to get new crest gate at 19th sluice gate
Munirabad (Koppal): Preparations are underway to install a new crest gate at the 19th sluice gate of the
, which will replace the stop log that was washed away last year.
The Gujarat-based Hardware Tools and Machinery Project Company, which secured the tender, procured materials from Vizag Steels and is currently working on constructing the gate near Gadag.

Furthermore, this company was also awarded the contract for the installation of the remaining 32 crest gates at the TB dam.
The crest gate was lost on Aug 10, 2024, resulting in the release of 40tmc of water into the river. Subsequently, a stop log was installed on the 19th spillway under the guidance of gate expert Kannaiah Naidu. The Gujarat Hardware Tools and Machinery Project Company won the tender valued at Rs 1.9 crore for the construction of the 19th gate, and preparations for the gate commenced.
Only the 19th gate will be constructed in Gadag, while Tungabhadra Board officials are considering starting work on the remaining 32 gates near the Tungabhadra Reservoir. Currently, the construction of the 19th gate is in progress and is expected to be installed by the end of June, according to sources from the board.
In this regard, Tungabhadra Board secretary ORK Reddy, superintendent engineer Narayan Nayak, and officers Nagaraj, Chandrashekhar, Gyaneshwar, and Raghavendra visited the construction site of the gate to inspect the progress. Tungabhadra Board officials directed the company representatives to ensure that the gate is constructed according to the specified design and installed promptly.

Many came not just to buy, but to watch the lively bartering, admire prized goats, and even place informal bets on goat weights and looks, a quirky but growing trend in local soaring prices, the spirit of Bakri Eid remains undeterred. Large crowds are expected to gather for early morning prayers at major mosques and areas like BG Road near Gurappanapalya, Millers Road (old Haj camp), Chamrajpet and BB Junction, after which families will return home to perform the Qurbani and share festive ensure smooth celebrations, the city's traffic police have issued advisories and designated alternative routes, anticipating heavy footfall around mosques and market areas.

Government launches ‘Shining Stars Award' to honour SSC, Inter toppers
VIJAYAWADA: In a bid to promote academic excellence, the State government has introduced the 'Shining Stars Award' for the 2024–25 academic year, replacing earlier award schemes. The initiative aims to recognise high-achieving students from both government and private institutions who excel in the SSC and Intermediate public examinations. As per a recent government order, SSC students securing 500 out of 600 marks (83.33%) or more will be honoured at the mandal level. For Intermediate, students scoring 830 and above will be recognised at the district level. The scheme also includes special provisions for Children With Special Needs (CWSN). Each awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs 20,000, a medal, and a certificate. Six SSC students per mandal—across OC, BC, SC, and ST categories—will be selected. In the Intermediate category, 36 students per district will be awarded from various streams, including MPC, BiPC, HEC, CEC/MEC, and Vocational courses, along with CWSN achievers. Secretary of the School Education Department, Kona Sasidhar, said the awards aim to inspire merit and sustained learning without income-based restrictions. 'It's a celebration of talent and determination,' he noted. The awards will be distributed on June 9 at district headquarters in events chaired by respective District In-charge Ministers. The Board of Intermediate Education will fund the programme.
