And for a few days this spring, the City of Lights was also home to Saut Hermès, an international equestrian competition.

Set in the Grand Palais on March 21-23, the 15th edition of the show-jumping tournament brought horses to the heart of Paris with temporary stables erected directly beside the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

Inside the tented rows, oversized orb-shaped lighting bathed the stalls in a warm, soft glow while large swaths of faux turf provided a soft footing for the equine athletes to make their way to the competition arena.

While handbags such as the Birkin or Kelly have long been coveted leather goods from the luxury French house, there is another design at the heart of its leather creation — the saddle.

'We often say at Hermès that the horse was Hermès' first client. (Former Hermès Chairman) Jean-Louis Dumas used to say this,' says Chloé Nobecourt, director of the Hermès Equestrian Métier. 'And actually it is very true. Hermès was founded in 1837 as a harness maker. And saddles arrived right after.'

Thierry Hermès started the brand as a small harness-making shop in Paris, setting out to create horsewear that was lightweight and refined — a stark contrast to the heavy, decorated designs that were popular at the time.

'For two main reasons,' Nobecourt explains. 'The first was to free the horse's movement. And the second was to reveal its beauty.'

From that simple ambition, a multibillion-dollar brand has been built, applying that same approach of good design, simplicity and quality to a vast array of product categories.

Located at 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the flagship store of Hermès is a hub of both retail, history and creation for the brand.

Around the corner from the Faubourg Saint Honoré store, through a big set of wooden doors reachable only after passing through a security checkpoint, many of the brand's standout pieces are made. Unbeknownst to many, this downtown Paris location has long been an epicentre of creation for the brand, including its made-to-measure saddles.

Whistler has a new brasserie — with traditional tortière and a connection to TV's Mad Men
With Lorette Brasserie, Whistler's restaurant scene is expanding with rich, hearty servings of Quebecois cuisine. 'Our impression was that there was nothing really like this in Whistler,' said Lorette co-owner James Paré. 'People will do French or whatever, but no one is really doing what we're doing. And I feel like the culture is growing. Customers are becoming more aware and more excited to try different things. We have some unique flavours and some items that people are excited to try, and maybe not just one night, but maybe a couple nights in a row.' Along with his uncle Jay, James is co-owner and operator of Lorette's parent company, Paré Restaurant Group, which includes two other Whistler restaurants, Quattro and Caramba. Caramba serves European-inspired comfort food, including steak, duck, and pasta, while Quattro is Italian. For their new restaurant, the Parés wanted to draw on their Quebecois heritage. 'We knew cretons for sure would be on the menu, and that tourtière was going to be on the menu,' James said. Cretons, a pork paté with pear served on toast, was a favourite of his when he was a kid, Jay said. 'Tourtière was something we had usually at breakfast time and special occasions.' A traditional French Canadian meat pie, the Lorette version of tourtière is made with suckling pig, confit duck, 'grandma's ketchup' and pan-seared foie gras. However, it's temporarily off the menu, probably until fall. 'It's such a heavy dish,' James said. Other plates include rillettes, a cured salmon spread served on crostini; petites pois à la Francaise, a braised peas and lettuce dish with lardons, baby gem, and lemon cream; coquilles St. Jacques, scallops and morels with comté and pomme purée; and beef tartare and bone marrow. Trained in the classical French culinary arts, James developed the menu with Lorette head chef Shane Sluchinski for six months before the Parés opened the doors on April 26. 'We did a lot of tastings, with Jay and myself, and we did a lot of collab that way as well, where we kind of just cooked food, tried it, and said, 'Oh, that'll be great with a nice Pinot Noir' or whatever,' James said. 'We were always trying to think of what that was going to look like. We haven't had to make a ton of tweaks, because we cooked so much of it.' The wine list is petite. 'We wanted to keep it nice and tight while appeasing all palates,' Jay said. 'It's predominantly French, with some BC wines that are French-focused as well.' Signature libations include the Montreal Margarita (Altos Plata tequila, china china, lemon lime, sea buckthorn cordial) and Lorette Fizz (Citadelle Jardin d'Ete, a French gin, with Lillet Blanc, lime, honeyed Riesling, and elderflower orange blossom foam). For beer, the brasserie is pouring an exclusive, a full-bodied, layered blanc from Whistler's Coast Mountain Brewing. 'We were down at a Seahawks game with Kevin [Winter, co-owner of Coast Mountain] last year,' James said. 'And he just said, 'Hey, I want to brew a beer for you guys.' When we tasted it for the first time, we were stunned.' Family photos, including one of Jay's mother who was Canada's first certified female ski instructor, add to the chic rustic charm of the restaurant's interior. She helped inspire the brasserie's name. 'My late mom's name was Lorene, and Jay's mom's middle name was Loretta. We were sitting at the bar one day and Jay said, 'What about Lorette?' And I was like, 'Oh my God, I love it. So we stuck with that from that point forward.' Another notable Paré is Jessica, who is perhaps best known for her role in Mad Men as the character Don Draper's French-Canadian wife Megan, the actor is one of the many cousins that show up for the annual 200-strong Paré Labour Day family reunion in Quebec. 'She needs to endorse us,' said James. 'We need to get her here.'

Jane Birkin's original Hermès bag goes on sale
Jane Birkin inspired the design of the bag, and famously wore her own Birkins out rather than keeping them pristine. (Sotheby's via CNN Newsource) The original Hermès Birkin bag, which acted as the blueprint for what would become one of the most desirable celebrity status symbols in the world, will go under the hammer in Paris next month. The capacious saddle-stitched handbag, inspired by actor and singer Jane Birkin who died in 2023, will lead the 'Fashion Icons' sale at Sotheby's on July 10, the auction house said in a statement Thursday. Known as 'The Original Birkin,' the all-black, leather handbag is the first version of the timeless luxury staple, which was envisaged about 40 years ago after a chance encounter on a plane between Birkin and then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, Sotheby's said. 'There are rare moments in the world of fashion when an object transcends trends and becomes a legend. Jane Birkin's Original Birkin bag is such a moment,' said Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global head of handbags and fashion, in the statement. Halimi said the bag 'stands shoulder to shoulder with other exceptional items with similarly dazzling provenance,' such as Princess Diana's 'black sheep' sweater and British rock star Freddie Mercury's crown and cloak. 'Like them, the Original Birkin holds the potential to redefine records,' Halimi added. CNN asked Sotheby's how much they expect the handbag to sell for, but the auction house would not provide an estimate. Birkin herself acknowledged the bag's legacy as a pop cultural phenomenon. She told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in 2020 that, after the bag's fame skyrocketed, she wondered whether it might – rather than her movies or hit song 'Je T'aime… Moi Non Plus' – become what she was best remembered for. The origin story of the bag started with an unexpected encounter. On a flight in 1984, Birkin found herself seated next to Dumas. They struck up a conversation in which she said she wanted a bag 'half the size of my suitcase,' Birkin told Amanpour. 'He said, 'Well, draw it for me,' and so I drew it on one of those sick bags – the vomit bags – in the airplane,' Birkin said. The original Birkin differs from subsequent versions in seven ways, Sotheby's said, with its size, metal rings, brass hardware, shoulder strap, zip and bottom studs setting the prototype apart from future bags. The bag, which is branded with Birkin's initials – 'J.B' – on the front flap, also has a pair of nail clippers hanging from the shoulder strap, the auction house said. It will go on public display at Sotheby's New York galleries from June 6 to 12. Thousands flocked to see the bag when it was exhibited publicly at Sotheby's Paris Galleries last autumn, and then at Sotheby's Maison in Hong Kong earlier this year, the auction house added.
