Mass demonstration held at Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha to mark 11th International Yoga Day

The event, held under the Union AYUSH Ministry's theme "Yoga for One Earth, One Health", was part of the nationwide 'Yoga Sangam' initiative. Organised by the Karnataka AYUSH Department in collaboration with yoga associations, civil society groups, and wellness organisations, the celebration in Bengaluru was one of the largest yoga gatherings in the state.
Inaugurating the event, Governor Gehlot emphasized the importance of yoga as a unifying force and a path to holistic health. Alongside Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and other dignitaries, the Governor participated in various yoga postures during the morning session, setting an example of public participation and well-being.

Elsewhere in the city, Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra led a yoga session with party workers at the BJP state office. Meanwhile, Mysuru—often dubbed the yoga capital of the state—witnessed a massive turnout at the Yoga Mahakumbh held at the historic Mysore Palace grounds.
Across Karnataka, celebrations extended to district and taluk levels, where parallel yoga sessions were conducted in schools, parks, and public venues, reinforcing the widespread enthusiasm for the ancient practice.
Joining the nationwide celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the main International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, highlighting how yoga has transcended borders and become a global movement for peace, health, and unity. (With agency inputs)

State approves ₹200 crore bridge project between Kotepura and Bolar, says Dinesh Gundu Rao
The State government has approved construction of a bridge between Kotepura (in Ullal) and Bolar at a cost of ₹200 crore, Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said in Mangaluru on Friday. In his Independence day address at the Nehru Maidan, Mr. Rao said the government has also approved construction of a new bridge, across the Netravati, between Sajipanadu in Bantwal taluk and Thumbe at a cost of ₹60 crore. These two bridges will not just ease traffic movement but also aid further development of the region, he said. The Minister said the PWD has taken up widening of Guruvayanakere-Uppinangady-Puttur stretch of the State highway. Road widening, construction of bridges and other works have been taken up on the Subrahmanya-Manjeshwar, Kadur-Kanhangad and Surathkal-Kabaka roads. A bridge was being re-constructed across Darpana river on the State highway in Kadaba taluk at a cost of ₹4.5 crore. The Addoor-Polali bridge was being repaired at a cost of ₹6.1 crore, the Ashwathapura-Mijar bridge was being constructed at a cost of ₹9 crore, and ₹4.95 crore was being spent for constructing a bridge on Parari-Ulaibettu-Mallur main raod. Seven new Indira canteens have been sanctioned, in addition to 17 Indira canteens in the district. The government is building G+3 apartment at Idya, near Surathkal, for 792 houseless persons. The Shakti, Gruha Jyothi, Gruha Lakshimi, and Yuva Nidhi guarantee schemes were doing well in the district, he said. As many as 33,356 people from Dakshina Kannada took the benefit of Puneet Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti scheme between March 2024 and July 2025. Under the scheme, district and taluk hospitals act as hubs where ECGs are done, while ECGs are analysed and necessary surgeries, if needed, are performed at Yenepoya Hospital at Deralakatte. A total of 296 people have undergone cardiac related surgery under the scheme, the Minister said. As many as 16 district hospitals in the State, including Government Wenlock Hospital, has Day Care Chemotherapy facility. Gruha Arogya scheme was being effectively implemented in the the district under which house-to-house visits were being done to make people aware about 14 communicable diseases and necessary medicine kits were being given, Mr. Rao said. Affirming commitment of the State government to ensure peace and tranquility in Dakshina Kannnada, the Minister said the government will not be bogged down by any external pressure in ensuring peace in the region. Mr. Rao said religious leaders were being told to make their people aware about importance of communal amity. Yakshagana troupes will also be involved in spreading message of communal harmony, he added.

Spl health screening for auto, cab drivers
Bengaluru: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday said the state government is mulling a separate health screening programme for autorickshaw and cab drivers amid reports of a rise in heart attack cases among this group. The Minister was replying to a question raised in the assembly during Question Hour. He stressed the need to improve the state's health screening system and said the Health department would take action in the days to come. Citing data from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, which revealed that last year about 20-30 percent of heart attack cases were auto and cab drivers, the Minister said, 'it is due to pollution, lack of sleep, dining outside, stress, they may also have BP and diabetes and don't take medicines, also they may have comorbidities, it is everything combined.' Senior BJP MLA Suresh Kumar suggested that the government conduct a massive CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training campaign across the state.

The Karnataka government is exploring the idea of launching a dedicated health screening initiative for auto rickshaw and cab drivers, following growing concerns over a surge in heart-related incidents among them. He attributed the trend to a mix of unhealthy lifestyle factors, including exposure to pollution, irregular sleep, high stress, poor dietary habits and unmanaged conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, according to news agency PTI. "It is due to pollution, lack of sleep, dining outside, stress, they may also have BP and diabetes and don't take medicines, also they may have comorbidities, it is everything combined," he said. The Health Minister also revealed that the government is evaluating whether to introduce preliminary heart health screenings for school students. Recognizing the mental strain on children, he mentioned that counselling services would also be part of the broader plan.
