9 in 10 Malaysians read bank scam alerts, survey finds
KUALA LUMPUR: Nine in 10 Malaysians actively read scam-related alerts, with satisfaction levels rising to 73 per cent, according to a survey released by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM). The survey reflects a growing awareness of scams and rising public trust in the financial sector's protective measures, driven by the ongoing #JanganKenaScam national awareness campaign, the two associations said in a joint statement today. Commissioned by the banking sector and conducted by Rakuten Insight between March and April 2025, the survey gathered responses from 1,000 individuals nationwide. According to the survey, 92 per cent of users recognised the risks of installing unsolicited Android Package Kit (APK) files, 85 per cent could identify fake short message service (SMS) messages, 79 per cent avoided suspicious links, 82 per cent would contact their bank if compromised, and 77 per cent would freeze their cards via mobile or online banking. ABM chairman Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the campaign has played a key role in improving public awareness and emphasised the need to move beyond education and towards behavioural readiness. 'We are seeing a positive shift in public awareness and trust, but we also recognise that scammers exploit fear and urgency to bypass rational thinking. From the survey, we saw that 71 per cent of respondents feared losing money if scammers' instructions were not followed, as the primary factor in scam cases,' he said. According to the statement, Malaysians are also showing increased confidence in their banks' protection measures, with 76 per cent of respondents expressing satisfaction with their banks' overall effectiveness in safeguarding against scams, a 13 per cent rise from the previous survey. Meanwhile, three in five respondents found their banks to be helpful after a scam had occurred, suggesting that post-incident support is becoming a trusted part of the response. It also said social media remains the most common source of scam awareness, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, with seven in 10 Malaysians now actively sharing scam warnings within their networks, especially via WhatsApp, which reflects a growing culture of community-based vigilance. AIBIM president Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said the results indicate that their awareness efforts are yielding positive outcomes, but they must not become complacent. 'Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, and our response must adapt in tandem. We want to equip Malaysians not only with information, but also with practical instincts and tools they can rely on in moments of uncertainty,' he said. - Bernama

Malaysia-Vietnam-Singapore green grid to boost ASEAN energy integration
ON the regional front, green-electricity interconnection project linking Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore will facilitate cross-border trade in renewables, directly advancing the ASEAN Power Grid's goal of a resilient, sustainable, and highly integrated energy market. 'Solar power will be the main driver in achieving the country's overarching RE goals. On top of the CRESS and CREAM, we expect the government to maintain its aggressive rollout of large scale solar (LSS) schemes,' said MBSB Research. Package A with a quota of 1.5GW is for land-based solar power plants while Package B is for the remaining 500MW, specifically for floating solar. Following that, we expect the Energy Commission (ST) to announce the bidding for LSS6, which will likely introduce another 2GW of solar capacity with battery energy storage system (BESS) requirements. Sarawak's strategic positioning as a hydro-centric renewable hub will be reinforced through a dedicated grid link to Peninsular Malaysia, further unifying the nation's clean-energy infrastructure. Integrating Sarawak's strength in hydropower balances Peninsular Malaysia's thermal-heavy profile, reducing reliance on coal and gas plants during high-demand periods. This will be a transformative move for the power sector. We expect EPCC contractors and M&E firms to be among the initial beneficiaries from this. In a report last year, ASEAN Energy said the interconnection plan is to connect Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak through grid-to-grid high-voltage DC (HVDC) subsea cables, with a planned 676km line capacity of 2 x 800 MW, or a total of 1.6GW. The implementing agencies are expected to be Tenaga Nasional and Sarawak Energy. Under Strategy A1.5 of the 13th Malaysian Plan, Malaysia will launch a nuclear-power program slated to come online by 2031, integrating nuclear alongside renewables to decarbonise its grid. MyPOWER Corporation will serve as the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organization, responsible for governing the national nuclear program in accordance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards. We view that nuclear power offers Malaysia a powerful lever to secure low carbon, reliable baseload capacity, which addresses the intermittency concerns and bolsters energy security. However, it comes with steep capital requirements, complex waste and safety obligations. We maintain our POSITIVE stance on the Utilities sector and the Renewable Energy subsector, underpinned by the structural policy tailwinds for a deep decarbonisation trajectory in line with the targets under NETR. We view that solar remains a multi-year growth engine, which will benefit EPCC players such as Solarvest (NR), Samaiden (BUY, TP: RM1.59), Pekat (BUY, TP: RM1.86), Sunview (BUY, TP: RM0.54) and Northern Solar (NR). Tenaga (BUY, TP: RM16.40) will be the key beneficiary in the asset ownership space from both RE capacity expansion and grid upgrade investments. Meanwhile, the recent request for proposal (RFP) for new gas-fired power generation capacity also presents a positive catalyst for the sector. This will be undertaken via two categories, which is the extension of the concession period for existing gas-fired power plants with expiring or expired existing power purchase agreements (PPAs) and through the development of new gas-fired power plants. This is expected to add about 8GW of new capacity. We expect independent power producers (IPPs) such as Malakoff (NR) and YTL Power International (BUY, TP: RM4.51) to be among the front runners for this new scheme. —Aug 5, 2025 Main image: DriveElectric

MACD urges boards to lead 13MP governance, ESG, AI reforms
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's corporate boards should spearhead the implementation of governance reforms under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), according to the Malaysian Alliance of Corporate Directors (MACD). In a statement, MACD said directors should embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into corporate strategy and reporting. The director of the institute also called for board-level oversight on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and risk and greater boardroom diversity in line with the government's target of 60 per cent women participation. "We also call on the government to strengthen collaboration with corporate directors to align board accountability with national governance priorities and ensure both listed companies and SMEs are supported in this transformation. "MACD stands ready to contribute through training, frameworks and peer learning and looks forward to contributing to a well-governed and future-ready Malaysia," it added. MACD welcomed the strong direction set by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the 13MP, particularly its focus on good governance, AI readiness and long-term national competitiveness. "We fully support the government's goal of placing Malaysia among the top 25 in the Corruption Perception Index and top 12 in the IMD Competitiveness Yearbook. "These are governance targets and corporate Malaysia has a central role to play in achieving them," it said. MACD noted the importance of key structural reforms introduced under 13MP, including the ILTIZAM Act, the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act and a renewed emphasis on GovTech and the MyDigital ID. It said these initiatives mark a significant step forward in strengthening accountability across both the public and private sectors.
