Congress MPs move suspension notices in Rajya Sabha over electoral credibility
Congress MPs Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain and Ranjeet Ranjan urged the House to suspend the Zero Hour and other listed business for August 7 to deliberate on what they described as alarming instances of disenfranchisement of vulnerable communities from electoral rolls.
In his notice, Dr. Syed Hussain wrote: 'Serious concerns have risen about the exclusion of already precarious communities from the electoral rolls, particularly in the absence of adequate safeguards, transparency, and due process in their implementation.'
Similarly, Rajeet Ranjan in her motion expressed apprehensions about the disenfranchisement of large sections of society. She stated: 'Serious apprehensions regarding the potential disenfranchisement of marginalized sections of society, who face migration, displacement, and documentation-related vulnerabilities need to be discussed to ensure inclusivity in democratic exrecises.'
Rule 267 allows a member to seek suspension of the day's business to discuss matters of urgent national importance. However, the acceptance of such motions lies at the discretion of the Chair.
The move comes amid heightened concerns within the opposition over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process and calls for greater transparency ahead of upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Members of Parliament from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) staged a protest at Makar Dwar inside the Parliament complex today, raising concerns over the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Serious questions which must be addressed, EC must act: Tharoor on Rahul's poll rigging claims
Citing Rahul Gandhi's poll rigging claims, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday said these are 'serious questions' which must be seriously addressed in the interest of all voters and urged the Election Commission to act urgently. In a post on X, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said India's democracy is too precious to allow its credibility to be destroyed by incompetence, carelessness or worse, deliberate tampering. Tagging a post by the Congress on Gandhi's press conference, in which the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged a 'huge criminal fraud' in polls, Tharoor said these are 'serious questions' which must be seriously addressed in the interest of all parties and all voters. 'Our democracy is too precious to allow its credibility to be destroyed by incompetence, carelessness or worse, deliberate tampering. @ECISVEEP must urgently act & @SpokespersonECI should keep the nation informed,' Tharoor said in his post. Tharoor's remarks demanding action over Gandhi's claims assume significance as of late, he has been at odds with the party's stance on certain issues, including Operation Sindoor. The differences first emerged after the government picked Tharoor to lead a diplomatic delegation to the US and other countries to convey India's zero-tolerance stance on terrorism following the April 22 Pahalgam attack. At a press conference on Thursday, Gandhi made explosive claims of a 'huge criminal fraud' in polls through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. He cited an analysis in a constituency in Karnataka and said it was 'a crime against the Constitution'. Claiming the 'vote chori model' was being used in many constituencies across the country, Gandhi also said that the judiciary needs to get involved in this because 'the democracy that we love so much, does not exist anymore'. Gandhi said what his party collected through research was 'criminal evidence' and alleged that the Election Commission was busy destroying such proof across the country.

Rahul Gandhi Releases New Video, Claims More 'Proof' On EC, BJP Collusion in Voter List Fraud Rahul Gandhi has released a new video detailing his serious allegations against the Election Commission (EC) and the BJP. He claims that the two are colluding to manipulate voter rolls and 'steal votes' in favor of the ruling party. In his video, Gandhi highlights examples from several states, including Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, accusing the EC of creating fake voters and manipulating the voter lists. He also pointed to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, which he says is designed to help the BJP secure votes in the state's upcoming elections. Gandhi's charges go beyond mere irregularities, calling them "institutional theft" and a betrayal of India's democracy. He challenged the Election Commission to investigate his claims, asserting that he is ready to provide the evidence. In his boldest statement, Gandhi declared that "vote chori is not just an electoral scam, but a betrayal of our Constitution."
