Odisha: Devotees throng Puri on fourth day of annual Rath Yatra
A devotee named Anita, who got the opportunity to pull the chariot, shared her excitement and said, 'We have been feeling lucky for the last two days because when we first came here, the Lord gave us darshan on the chariot. There was a huge crowd, but even amidst that, it seemed like he was protecting us.'
'After the stampede yesterday morning, our family members were worried. However, we don't feel any chaos here. Everything is good here and everyone is kind. We are very blessed to see such beautiful scenes,' she further added.
Another devotee, Deepak Rawat, who was attending the Rath Yatra for the first time, said, 'I have come here for the first time and Lord Jagannath has given me a wonderful opportunity to pull the chariot. I want to thank Lord Jagannath so that he can provide such opportunities to everyone and fulfil everyone's wishes.'
Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured in Sunday's stampede at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri.
Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan called the stampede 'very unfortunate' and said that appropriate action will be taken after the completion of investigation.
'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident. We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters.
He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, he gives darshan to his devotees. Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers. I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.'
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of 25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Following the incident, the state government has ordered a high-level administrative inquiry to be supervised by the Development Commissioner. Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra has been appointed in place of the previous SP, and Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain has been replaced by Chanchal Rana. Odisha DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi were also suspended for negligence of duty. (ANI)

CBI court sentences Head Constable to seven-year imprisonment in graft case
A special CBI court of Chandigarh Wednesday sentenced a Chandigarh Police Head Constable to seven-year imprisonment in a graft case. The convict, Ram Kumar, a Head Constable, was held guilty under Section 7 as well as Section 13(1) (d) (ii) punishable under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 on the convict. A detailed judgment was yet to be released in the matter. As per the prosecution, the case dates back to 2017 when Ram Kumar, who had been posted as a head constable at Sarangpur police station, was booked by the CBI. Kumar was held in May 2017 by the sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a woman, who was named in an FIR of voluntarily causing grievous hurt. The policeman was caught from a residential area in Sarangpur. The accused was taking the bribe for not taking any action against the woman, whose husband Shiv Nath had already been arrested in the case. The complainant and her husband were booked for assaulting their relative Guru Narayan on March 3. The FIR was registered at the Sarangpur police station and the investigation was being conducted by Kumar. Following all this, Kumar had demanded Rs 18,000 from the complainant but later the deal was struck for Rs 10,000. When Kumar went to take the bribe amount, the CBI sleuths reached the spot and caught the cop and recovered the bribe money from him. During the trial in court, the defence counsel argued that Kumar had been falsely implicated in the case and had no involvement in the matter. The court, however, after hearing the arguments held the accused guilty.

Pakistan extends airspace ban for Indian aircraft till September 23
Synopsis Pakistan has prolonged its airspace ban for Indian aircraft until September 23, as announced by the Pakistan Airports Authority through a new NOTAM. This restriction, initially imposed on April 23 due to heightened tensions after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, prohibits Indian airlines and aircraft from using Pakistani airspace. India had previously responded with a reciprocal airspace closure for Pakistani aircraft. The Pakistan Airports Authority has issued a fresh NOTAM (notice to airmen) announcing the one-month extension of the restriction on Indian aircraft in Pakistan's airspace. "All aircraft operated by Indian airlines will not be allowed to use Pakistani airspace. The ban also remains in place for military and civilian aircraft that are Indian-owned or leased," the authority said. The ban was initially imposed on April 23 for one month in the wake of tension between the two countries following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The move barred Indian carriers and aircraft from flying over Pakistani territory. Days later, on April 30, India responded with a reciprocal airspace closure for Pakistani aircraft and airlines. The tit-for-tat restrictions were first extended on May 23.
