Odisha: Devotees throng Puri on fourth day of annual Rath Yatra
Puri (Odisha) [India], June 30 (ANI): On the fourth day of Rath Yatra, devotees gathered in large numbers to witness and be part of the grand event. The Rath Yatra began on June 27 from Jagannath Temple here. July 5 will mark the conclusion of the event, known as 'Bahuda Yatra'.
A devotee named Anita, who got the opportunity to pull the chariot, shared her excitement and said, 'We have been feeling lucky for the last two days because when we first came here, the Lord gave us darshan on the chariot. There was a huge crowd, but even amidst that, it seemed like he was protecting us.'
'After the stampede yesterday morning, our family members were worried. However, we don't feel any chaos here. Everything is good here and everyone is kind. We are very blessed to see such beautiful scenes,' she further added.
Another devotee, Deepak Rawat, who was attending the Rath Yatra for the first time, said, 'I have come here for the first time and Lord Jagannath has given me a wonderful opportunity to pull the chariot. I want to thank Lord Jagannath so that he can provide such opportunities to everyone and fulfil everyone's wishes.'
Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured in Sunday's stampede at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri.
Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan called the stampede 'very unfortunate' and said that appropriate action will be taken after the completion of investigation.
'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident. We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters.
He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, he gives darshan to his devotees. Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers. I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.'
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of 25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Following the incident, the state government has ordered a high-level administrative inquiry to be supervised by the Development Commissioner. Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra has been appointed in place of the previous SP, and Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain has been replaced by Chanchal Rana. Odisha DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi were also suspended for negligence of duty. (ANI)

Delhi police nab 2 in Rs 10 cr stock investment scam
New Delhi: A social media chat turned into a costly ordeal for a Delhi resident, ultimately exposing a stock investment scam operated from a hotel in Nepal, with fraudulent transactions exceeding Rs 10 crore in just one month, an official said on Monday. Two people, Shashi Pratap Singh (28), a BBA graduate and Nihal Pandey (27), who holds an MCA degree, have been apprehended from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur in this regard, the police official said. Shashi disclosed that Nihal had taken him to Nepal, from where these phoney operations were being conducted. Nihal revealed that a person had tasked him with arranging multiple bank accounts for laundering the defrauded money. 'Nihal had taken Shashi to Nepal, where they stayed in a hotel with three others and handed over SIM cards and banking credentials to a person,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said. He added that in return, Shashi was promised a 1.5 per cent commission on transactions and reportedly received Rs 8–10 lakh in cash. Police said transactions totalling Rs 10.40 crore were conducted over a month using just one private bank account. 'The case came to light when complainant Sachin Kumar Tomar approached the police after being defrauded of Rs 8.15 lakh. He alleged that he was lured into investing in a fraudulent online trading platform by a woman named Sakshi Yadav, whom he met on social media,' Gautam said. She persuaded the victim to open a trading account and added him to a messaging group, claiming it was operated by her uncle and an associate named Rakesh, he said. Tomar deposited Rs 8.15 lakh into bank accounts. However, when he attempted to withdraw the returns on his 'profits,' the transactions failed, and his access was blocked. A case was registered, and investigators found that Rs 5.75 lakh of the cheated funds had been transferred to a private bank account. Further probe revealed the account was jointly held by Shashi and his father, Ramashankar Singh, the DCP said. 'Although the father claimed no knowledge of the transactions, he admitted to being a joint account holder. Shashi was arrested following sustained interrogation,' an officer said, adding that Nihal was also arrested from Gorakhpur. The gang operated by first contacting potential victims through social media platforms and posed as financial experts. They then lured victims with the promise of high returns on stock market investments. Initially, small profits were shown to build trust. As soon as larger investments were made, victims were blocked or told their accounts were frozen due to fictitious compliance execute this fraud on a large scale, the accused needed multiple bank accounts and SIM cards, which they obtained by luring people with cash incentives, the officer said.

US-India trade deal being finalised, will be announced soon, says White House
A trade deal between India and the United States is close to being finalised and will be announced soon, ANI quoted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as having said on Monday. The statement came days before the 90-day suspension of tariffs announced by United States President Donald Trump is set to end on July 9. 'I just spoke to our secretary of commerce about it [India-US trade deal],' Leavitt said during a press briefing. 'He was in the Oval office with the president. They are finalising these agreements.' She added that an announcement from Trump and his trade team is expected 'very soon'. Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs imposed on several countries, including a 26% 'discounted' levy on India, took effect on April 9. Hours later, however, Trump had reduced the rates on imports from most countries to 10% for 90 days to provide time for trade negotiations. The US president had repeatedly said he intended to impose a reciprocal tax on India, among others, citing high tariffs the countries impose on foreign goods. The tariffs had led to concerns of a broader trade war that could disrupt the global economy and trigger recession. The Indian government has said that it is in talks with Washington to finalise a bilateral trade agreement between September and November. An Indian team led by Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal had visited the US in May to negotiate a trade agreement. Following this, a US team of negotiators was in India for a week earlier this month. On Friday, Trump had said that New Delhi could sign a ' very big ' trade deal with Washington. Leavitt on Monday called India a ' very strategic ally ' of the US in the Indo-Pacific region. Responding to a question about China's influence in the area, Leavitt said: 'India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific and the President [Donald Trump] has a very good relationship with Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi and he will continue to have that.' 'Would love a big trade pact with US' Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, reacting to Trump's statement on the announcement of the bilateral trade agreement, said on Monday that India would 'love to have an agreement, a big, good, beautiful one', reported The Indian Express. 'At the junction we are in, and given our growth goals and ambition to be Viksit Bharat by 2047, the sooner we have such agreements with strong economies, the better they will serve us,' she told the newspaper. PM Modi to address Parliaments of Ghana, Namibia, Trinidad &Tobago during 5-nation visit (Image credits: ANI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the parliaments of Ghana, Namibia, and Trinidad & Tobago ahead of his 5-nation visit, senior officials from the ministry of external affairs confirmed on Monday. The visit, beginning on July 2, will include participation in the Brice Summit in Brazil and bilateral meetings with leaders from Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to further strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties. Dammu Ravi, secretary (economic relations), said this will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in 30 years. While in Ghana, PM Modi will hold delegation-level talks focused on reviewing and expanding the bilateral relationship. "The next day, Prime Minister will be addressing the parliament and he also will be interacting with the Indian community there, which is about 15,000 in number", reported ANI quoting Ravi. Modi is scheduled to arrive in Namibia on July 9. Secretary Ravi called the visit significant, as it comes after a 27-year gap. 'The substance of the relationship is, again, as you know, that India and Namibia have had a very strong relationship for a very long time,' secretary Ravi added as reported by ANI. Neena Malhotra, secretary (south), briefed on the PM's visit to Trinidad and Tobago, which is taking place at the invitation of prime minister Kamala Prasad Bisessar. This will mark PM Modi's first trip to Trinidad and Tobago and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999. "In a special gesture, PM Modi will also address the joint session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. The visit is expected to strengthen the bilateral partnership across key areas and reaffirm our enduring ties with the Caribbean," said Dr Malhotra. She described the PM's address to Parliament as "symbolic of our strong parliamentary traditions as well as democratic values."
