New York City has opened the nation's first city-funded homeless shelter exclusively for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) adults. Named Ace's Place, the 150 bed facility is located in Long Island City, Queens, and is being operated by Destination Tomorrow , a Bronx-based LGBTQ+ nonprofit.The launch marks a major step toward addressing the long standing housing inequities faced by TGNC individuals, who often experience higher rates of homelessness, discrimination in traditional shelters, and barriers to essential services.Ace's Place was created in response to a 2021 legal settlement that required New York City to develop dedicated housing options for TGNC people experiencing homelessness.
