It was another entertaining night of action in MLS as we are nearly through all of matchday 3.
Here is what went down around the grounds Saturday evening.

After a dull match to open the day between Columbus and Houston, Seattle made a major statement by putting five goals past LAFC.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Union continued their rapid start to the season with a victory away to New England.
Cincinnati got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Toronto, despite rotating the team in anticipation of their Concacaf Champions League second-leg this week.

The Chicago Fire came from behind after scoring a bundle of goals in the dying minutes in Dallas to stun the home side and steal three points.
Staying in Texas, Austin's woes continued as they fell at home to the Colorado Rapids amid refereeing controversy deep into stoppage-time.
In the later windows, Nashville SC got their name in the win column for the first time this season with a comfortable win over

Finally, in one of the bigger results of the evening, Minnesota United ended San Jose's winning start to the campaign with a win at PayPal Park.
There is no other choice but Jordan Morris.
The Seattle Sounders star etched his name into the record books Saturday afternoon when he became the club's all-time leading goalscorer with a strike against LAFC.

Today was special. I'm incredibly grateful for and proud of this achievement. Being a kid from Seattle, going through the academy, having the dream to step on the field for my hometown club, to now being the club's leading scorer is surreal. Thank you Seattle. More to come! 🙌🏻 pic.twitter.com/ksNKcz5Ktz

Now this is what you call a red-hot start...
After scoring in the second half tonight, @PhilaUnion forward Tai Baribo tied Ante Razov (6 in 1999) for the most goals scored through the first three games of a season in @MLS history. pic.twitter.com/VRmGgS3JXO

While it's still early in the season, the table is starting to take shape.
Despite their hefty spending spree in the winter, Atlanta United find themselves in 11th place in the Eastern Conference after their goalless draw with the Red Bulls.
Surprise package Vancouver Whitecaps remain in sole possession of top spot in the west after beating Montréal.
The action continues on Sunday as Lionel Messi and Inter Miami square off with Charlotte FC, while the ailing champions LA Galaxy play host to St. Louis City in search of their first win of the season.

WNBA Star Slams Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in Candid Rebuke

WNBA Star Slams Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in Candid Rebuke originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The WNBA schedule has come under fire from fans and analysts alike, who contend that the expanded 44-game slate, combined with shared arenas, creates brutal back-to-back road trips, cuts into critical recovery time, dilutes marquee matchups and ultimately jeopardizes both player health and fan engagement. Advertisement Now, Phoenix Mercury forward and WNBPA representative Satou Sabally has joined the chorus of critics, directly challenging Commissioner Cathy Engelbert after Saturday's 89–77 loss to the Seattle Storm. Sabally lamented, 'Cathy added a lot of games. And us as players, recovery is so important. We put our bodies on the line every single time. We had nine games in 18 days. It's not really responsible for a commissioner.' WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert talks to the media.© Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images "I think other teams have like three back-to-back. So it's just a lot of things that we could clean up in terms of scheduling," She added. Sabally stressed that consistent access to top-tier recovery tools and collaboration between the league and its players are essential for sustainable competition. Advertisement "Nine games in 18 days. How much can you recover? How fast can you recover? Obviously, we have a great staff, and I trust in that. But in previous years, it did look different for me." Sabally said. 'Just making sure that all teams supply the necessary recovery tools, treat professionals as professionals, and that the league works with players instead of simply throwing us out there,' she added, underscoring that player welfare must be a priority if the WNBA hopes to maintain both its growth trajectory and its competitive integrity. Sabally's comments intensify calls for reform, prompting fans and analysts to urge the league to revisit its schedule, safeguarding player well-being. The WNBA is yet to respond. Diamondbacks lookahead: Mariners, Padres next on Arizona's schedule

The Diamondbacks finish up their six-game road trip to Atlanta and Cincinnati this week, and look ahead to back-to-back series against a pair of current postseason contenders. The Seattle Mariners are first, from June 9-11. The Mariners have been at or near the top of the American League West for much of this season and have an above .500 record on the road. Advertisement Seattle is best known for its starting rotation, which features Bryan Woo, veteran Luis Castillo and 2024 All-Star Logan Gilbert. Outfielder Julio Rodriguez has, for the past few years, been the face of the club, but that has changed this season with catcher Cal Raleigh's hitting. Raleigh is one of the top home run hitters in baseball. As of June 4, he was tied with Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead in home runs with 23, and recently said he'd jump at the opportunity if asked to take part in the 2025 Home Run Derby at the All-Star break. The Mariners have won each of the past five series against the Diamondbacks and are 26-16 all-time against Arizona. Then come the San Diego Padres, June 13-15, in what is to be the first meeting of 2025 between the NL West rivals. San Diego has been pressuring the Dodgers for first place in the division for much of this season. Advertisement The Padres went through a six-game losing streak in the middle of May, but went 8-3 between May 23 and June 3. Their offense is paced by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Luis Arraez. Jason Adam and Robert Suarez are the prime setup and closer punch out of the bullpen, and Nick Pivetta and Michael King have been the top starting pitchers for the Padres. The first 20,000 fans attending the June 14 game against San Diego receive a Ketel Marte Silver Slugger cap in honor of the Diamondbacks' star second baseman, and on Father's Day, June 15, polo shirts for adults are the giveaway item. Mariners Announce Julio Rodriguez News After Angels Game

Mariners Announce Julio Rodriguez News After Angels Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. This was the second game of a three-game AL West series. With the loss, Seattle ends the night 3.5 games back of the first-place Houston Astros, and just two games up on the third-place Angels. Advertisement In addition to the MVP-caliber numbers switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh has been putting up this season, Seattle has been reliant on the production of All-Star center fielder Julio Rodriguez. The 24-year-old is second on the team in RBIs and runs scored, and has played good defense in center, including a home run robbing catch in the series opener against LA. Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (44)© Jason Parkhurst-Imagn Images In an unfortunate development on Saturday, Rodriguez was removed from the game after recording hits in each of his first two at-bats. While running from second to third, Rodriguez was struck by a 98.1 MPH ground ball off the bat of Randy Arozarena. Advertisement Not only was this an automatic out, but it forced Rodriguez to exit the game. There was obvious concern among Seattle fans, and the Mariners have since announced an official update via manager Dan Wilson. "Julio Rodríguez had X-rays taken tonight here at Angel Stadium, which came back negative … He is day to day and Dan Wilson is optimistic that he'll avoid the IL, but they won't know more until tomorrow," Daniel Kramer of wrote on X. This encouraging update from the team got even better when Rodriguez told reporters there is a "high chance" he plays in the series finale against Los Angeles (via Kramer). Advertisement Rodriguez owns a .742 OPS this season, which is below his career .793 mark. The 2022 AL Rookie of the Year, Rodriguez burst onto the scene with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs in his first MLB season. He followed that with 32 homers and 103 RBIs the next season, but took a step back in 2024. While his numbers do not mirror what he did in his first two MLB seasons, Rodriguez remains an integral part of this Seattle team that has postseason hopes.
