Spain breaks up ring smuggling Yemenis to UK, Canada

Arab News3 days ago
MADRID: Spanish police said Monday they have dismantled a criminal network suspected of smuggling mainly Yemeni migrants into Britain and Canada with fake passports.
After obtaining refugee documents in Greece, the migrants went to European airports where gang members would deliver them counterfeit passports to allow them to 'irregularly' go to the two countries, police said in a statement.
The group allegedly facilitated more than 40 irregular migration attempts, charging up to 3,000 ($3,250) per person.
Police said they started investigating in September after Canada's border agency alerted Spanish authorities to multiple cases of Yemeni nationals trying to enter from Spanish airports using forged travel documents.
Officers arrested 11 suspected gang members, including its alleged leader, in raids in northern Spain and Madrid.
Police said they traced flight bookings, money transfers, credit card payments, airport surveillance footage, and electronic travel authorizations as part of their probe into the network.
Authorities in Austria, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and Britain helped the investigation, and the European Union's Europol agency helped analyze data from mobile devices that were seized from the suspects.

Lebanon's Army Says Its Troops Have Killed 3 of the Country's Most Wanted Drug Dealers

The Lebanese army on Wednesday said it killed three of the country's most wanted drug dealers, who also had been involved in killing members of the military. The shooting in the northeastern city of Baalbek comes as the cash-strapped military tries to exert its presence across the country, including along the border with Syria. For years, the porous border has been a key route for weapons and drug smuggling, notably cannabis and the amphetamine-like stimulant captagon. The army said in a statement an exchange of fire occurred as members of the military were chasing the car used by the three Lebanese citizens, leading to their death. 'They were among the most wanted and dangerous drug dealers,' the army said. It added that the three had been involved in shooting at army posts and patrols as well as kidnapping and theft. Two judicial officials said one of the men had 115 arrest warrants against him and was involved in the 2023 kidnapping of a foreigner in Beirut. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Russia arrests man accused of passing satellite secrets to US

A man accused of passing Russian satellite secrets to the United States has been arrested for suspected treason and placed in pre-trial detention, a court in the Russian city of Kaliningrad said on Wednesday. The court, in a statement on Telegram, identified the suspect only as 'O' and said he was a former employee of a company producing electronic engines for space satellites. It said he was suspected of collecting and storing information about the firm's technology on behalf of US intelligence services between July 2021 and December 2023. The man was placed in detention until September 30, the court said. The charge of high treason carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment.
