Softbank's biggest bet: Masayoshi Son plans trillion-dollar AI hub in Arizona. Details here
SoftBank Group's founder Masayoshi Son is seeking to team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to build a trillion-dollar industrial complex in Arizona for manufacturing robots and artificial intelligence.
The billionaire aims to build a version of the vast manufacturing hub in China's Shenzhen that would bring back high-tech manufacturing to the US, according to sources known to Bloomberg.
The park may comprise production lines for AI-powered industrial robots.
Codenamed 'Project Crystal Land', the Arizona complex represents the 67-year-old SoftBank chief's most ambitious attempt in a career that's spanned numerous bet-the-house bids, thousands-fold returns and billions of dollars in losses, said Bloomberg.
SoftBank officials are expecting the Taiwanese maker of Nvidia Corp's advanced AI chips to play a prominent role in the project, although the exact plan is not clear.
TSMC already plans to invest $165 billion in the US and has started mass production at its first Arizona factory. It is also not clear whether TSMC would be interested, the news report suggests.
SoftBank officials have been in touch with federal and state government officials to discuss possible tax breaks for companies building factories or otherwise investing in the industrial park.
Son has compiled a list of SoftBank Vision Fund portfolio companies that might take part in the Arizona manufacturing hub. SoftBank-backed startups working on robotics and automation technologies, such as Agile Robots SE may set up production facilities at the industrial complex, said the news agency.
The plans' progress highly depends on support from the Trump administration and state officials. While the project may require as much as $1 trillion to execute, the actual scale depends on interest from big technology companies, the news report said.
While exploring the Arizona project, Softbank also plans to invest as much as $30 billion into OpenAI. It's also seeding money into the Stargate venture with OpenAI, Oracle and Abu Dhabi's MGX, seeking to put hundreds of billions of dollars into data centres and related infrastructure around the world.
Those outlays come as SoftBank's cash stood at $23 billion at the end of March. The Tokyo-based company also raised around $4.8 billion this month by selling its stake in T-Mobile US.
The Softbank founder's multiple investments in projects that proceed in fits and starts make it difficult to determine how committed he is to any one venture, said the news agency
The billionaire is often goaded by the desire to boost SoftBank's stock price and repay retail investors who've held onto the company's shares from before the dot-com boom and bust. Many investors have waited for decades for the stock to recover, said sources known to Bloomberg.
If Son's primary motivation is to clear the way for AI, it may be more cost-efficient to encourage partnerships that link manufacturing expertise with that of AI engineers and specialists in fields from medicine to robotics, and incubating smaller companies, Melissa Otto, the head of research at Visible Alpha told Bloomberg,
But pouring cash into data centres may help lower the cost of developing AI applications and spur broader adoption, she said. 'He's a long-term thinker, and he takes risks,' Otto said. 'It's just too early to tell.'

Bharti Space to invest $36 million in French satellite major Eutelsat
As part of a plan to refinance debt and expand its upcoming constellation of satellites, French satellite major Eutelsat Communications will raise €1.35 billion, or $1.55 billion, through a reserved capital increase and a rights issue, the company announced on Friday. Bharti Enterprises' space venture, Bharti Space Ltd, will invest €31.4 million, or $36 million, in the capital raise. In 2023, Bharti Enterprises-backed satellite communications company OneWeb had merged with Eutelsat to become the second-largest satellite operator globally, with 669 satellites in orbit. The reserved capital increase, valued at €716 million, will see new shares issued at €4 each — a 32 per cent premium over the recent 30-day volume-weighted average price, said Eutelsat, which is a key rival of Elon Musk's Starlink. The Agence des Participations de l'État (APE), or State Participations Agency, responsible for managing the French state's shareholdings in companies of strategic importance, will subscribe €526.4 million of this. Shipping giant CMA CGM and Le Fonds Stratégique de Participations (FSP), an investment fund owned by seven France-based insurance firms, will also invest €100.4 million and €57.8 million respectively. A separate rights issue of €634 million will also be subscribed by these investors. Apart from supporting a dedicated debt refinancing plan, this capital increase will reinforce the company's financial flexibility by accelerating deleveraging and supporting investment in its existing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) capabilities and the future IRIS² constellation. "By strengthening the capital of Eutelsat, the only European player in low-orbit constellations, France is ensuring its strategic independence and preparing that of Europe," French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted on Friday. Positioned as the only European operator with a fully operational Geostationary Orbit (GEO)–Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network, Eutelsat plays a pivotal role in military and secure communications. A 10-year, €1 billion contract with France's Ministry of Armed Forces further cements its role in the nation's defence and space communication strategy. The global satellite connectivity market is expected to grow by 12 per cent per annum between 2025 and 2029. The global LEO B2B connectivity market is currently valued at over $2.1 billion and is expected to grow at a 28 per cent compounded annual growth rate through 2029, multiplying its current size fivefold over the next eight years — offering significant short to long-term growth potential. 'I am delighted that under the leadership of President Macron, the French state has decided to back Eutelsat as the European space champion and increased its shareholding by injecting a sizable investment into the company. We are also thrilled to welcome the French armed forces ministry, DGA's partnership with Eutelsat in a long-term €1 billion contract to reserve capacity on Eutelsat's Low Earth Orbit OneWeb constellation for its mission-critical needs,' said Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman, Bharti Enterprises, and co-chairman, Eutelsat Group. Eutelsat forecasts revenue growth to reach between €1.5–1.7 billion by FY 2028–29, fuelled by strong LEO momentum. The company also expects a minimum EBITDA margin of 60 per cent by that period, supported by operational leverage. For FY 2025–26, revenues are expected to align with the previous year, while LEO revenues are projected to grow by 50 per cent year-on-year. Gross capital expenditure for FY 2025–26 is estimated at €1.0–1.1 billion, primarily directed towards LEO expansion, including procurement of new satellites and preparation for the IRIS² constellation deployment from FY 2027–28 onward. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already granted OneWeb, Reliance Jio's satellite arm Jio Space Limited, and Starlink the necessary licences to offer satellite-based broadband services in India.

Polish company LPP's online sales climbs by 25.1% in Q1 FY25
In the first quarter of 2025, the Gdansk-based company recorded strong double-digit sales growth in both the traditional channel by 19.9 per cent and online by 25.1 per cent respectively. The beginning of the current financial year at LPP was marked by the laying of strong foundations for the implementation of the long-term development strategy announced by the company in April. In Q1, Poland's LPP saw strong double-digit sales growthâ€'19.9 per cent in-store and 25.1 per cent onlineâ€'driven by its omni-channel strategy. The company opened 136 new stores, expanding its network to nearly 3,000 locations. LPP is expanding into Central Asia and Eastern Europe while focusing on profitability, flexible strategy execution, and optimising store formats. The plan to strengthen the physical network while leveraging the potential of e-commerce, which was launched last year, resulted in double-digit sales growth in both channels in the period from February to April. Operational efficiency and optimal use of infrastructure built with long-term business goals in mind allowed the company to return to double-digit profit growth and generate nearly PLN 1 billion (~$26.83 billion) in EBITDA in the reporting period. 'We have had an intense but successful start to the year in terms of sales. We are pleased with the positive reception of our spring collections, especially given the subdued consumer sentiment across the market. Meanwhile, the double-digit revenue growth achieved by LPP, both in the traditional and online channels, serves to prove that we not only have an excellent understanding of customer expectations, but also respond flexibly to changing market conditions. Our priority remains a broader view of the market and the intensive, yet stable and secure development of the group in the coming years,' said Marcin Bójko, vice-president of LPP for finance . The first quarter sales results and the return to double-digit growth in quarterly profits confirm that the ambitious business plans for the coming years will be implemented on a solid financial basis. The group maintains its target of doubling its omni-channel revenue and expanding its physical network by 2027, while maintaining profitability at the declared level. Consistently pursuing this goal, in the first quarter of this year, the company opened 136 new stores, including 112 Sinsay stores. As a result, the group's physical network now comprises nearly 3,000 locations, and the total sales area increased by 22 per cent year-over-year, exceeding 2.5 million square metres. The effectiveness of LPP's network development and the maintenance of strong budgetary discipline are reflected in SG&A costs, which grew more slowly than revenue in the first quarter. LPP is also continuing its expansion into new markets. Following successful debuts in Albania and Kosovo in the first quarter of this year, the company plans to open 20 more Sinsay stores in both countries. Following Central and Southern Europe, the company's next expansion direction will be Central Asia, including a return to the development of its sales network in Kazakhstan, where 60 new Sinsay stores will open by the end of the year. The brand will also debut in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and in the first quarter of 2026 it will enter a new European market, Moldova, the company said in a press release. 'We are closing the first quarter of this year with the conviction that the development strategy based on the unique and scalable Sinsay concept remains unchanged in the long term. However, the key to achieving our goals is not the number of stores opened in the coming quarters, but what has been our advantage in recent years, namely the flexible adaptation of our assumptions to the realities we encounter at every stage of our business plans. Acting in this vein, we already know that our overriding goal will be to maintain profitability and eliminate factors that could dilute it. Hence, our current goal is to optimise the product mix in selected smaller stores and focus on the formats and locations that offer the highest quality in the long term,' explained Bójko.
