Scouting America Troop 529 cleans Spectre Island
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – Members of Scouting America Troop 529 (Shalimar) removed hundreds of pounds of trash from Spectre Island in the Santa Rosa Sound.
According to a news release, 11 youth scouts and seven adult leaders paddled canoes out to the island for a day of conservation to clean litter and debris.
These members collected nearly 300 pounds of trash both inland and on the shores of the island.
The island was littered with cans, spent shotgun shells, cigarette butts, a buouy, fishing debris, folding chairs and toys.
'I am extremely proud of these scouts and how they have lived up to the Scout Oath and Law as well as our slogan to Do A Good Turn Daily,' said Troop 529 Scoutmaster Chris Cutler. 'I encourage the community to follow the lead from these young scouts to be conservation-minded.'
In addition, the scouts had the opportunity to complete the requirements for the canoeing merit badge, which included challenging deep-water canoeing rescues.

Swim safe this summer: Boys & Girls Club of Bay County offering affordable swim lessons
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Summer is here, and so is swimming pool season. Safety officials say it's important to dive into it safely. The Bay County Boys and Girls Club is offering swim lessons for everyone through the American Red Cross Centennial Program. The two-week program teaches kids about water dangers and life-saving skills like floating and treading water. The lessons are 45 minutes each and are tailored to all swimmers, to ensure everyone has a safe summer. DOH-Bay County lifts advisory as water quality improves at parks The Red Cross partnership means reduced costs for the lessons, making it one of the most affordable in Bay County. 'We're standing in Bay County. We're practically surrounded by water, and water is such a central thing that people do, especially during the summer here in Florida. And unfortunately, the county has three times the national drowning rate. We want to change that. We will make sure that we prepare even first-time learners, like adults that don't know how to swim. I encourage them to give us a call,' Bay County Boys and Girls Club Chief Executive Officer Hank Hill said. Adult beginner swim lessons begin on Saturday, Mommy & Me, and kids lessons begin on Monday. Lessons are located at the Aquatics Center: 3404 W. 19th Street, Panama City. News 13 awards Scholar Athletes of the Year
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — After another school year of honoring standout student-athletes across the Panhandle, WMBB News 13 has named its 2024-2025 Scholar Athletes of the Year. This year's Scholar Athletes of the Year are Gillian Peaden of North Bay Haven Charter Academy and Jackson Welch of Malone High School. As part of the annual honor, both Peaden and Welch received a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of the attorneys of Perry & Young P.A. and WMBB News 13. Both seniors were recognized not only for their excellence in sports but also for their academic achievements and leadership on campus. Peaden was a leader on North Bay Haven's girls weightlifting team, helping the Buccaneers become one of the top programs in the region. She finished her senior season as a state champion, capping off a decorated high school career. In the classroom, Peaden maintained high academic standards, earning admission to the University of Florida. However, she plans to begin her college journey locally at Gulf Coast State College while continuing to compete in weightlifting at the national level. 'There were times when I was supposed to work out and I just told Paille, 'Hey, I really need to study,'' Peaden said. 'I had gym third period and a test fourth period. I'd reschedule my workout, but my grades had to come first.' Welch, the valedictorian of Malone High School, has been a four-year starter on the Tigers boys basketball team and is regarded as one of the top three-point shooters in the Southeast. This fall, he'll join the Chipola College men's basketball program as a preferred walk-on. Welch said staying disciplined on both ends, academics and athletics, has always been his approach. 'A lot of times guys just want to focus on their sport,' Welch said. 'But to be a true scholar-athlete, you need to put equal time into your studies. It's just as important.'
