Lesufi says resources being directed to fixing Gauteng's roads

Eyewitness News22-05-2025

JOHANNESBURG - At least 65% of the Gauteng government's road network is in a bad state, riddled with potholes and dysfunctional traffic lights.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced at a media briefing on Thursday that resources were being directed towards fixing roads.
The province has been working to get its house in order before the G20 Summit is scheduled to sit in Johannesburg in November.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that of the 4,500 roads under the provincial government's control, only 35% of them were in good condition.
"We have appointed the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to assist us with mapping potholes in the province. According to the latest report from CSIR, our province has 5,400 km of road Infrastructure, comprising 5,000 km of tarred roads and 1,800 km of gravel roads."
Lesufi said that money was being allocated to fix the province's roads.
"To address these challenges, we have allocated R1.5 billion for immediate road repairs and maintenance. Additionally, by the end of 2025, we will take over the coordination of road maintenance programmes currently managed by provinces and municipalities to ensure more efficient service delivery."
Another area of concern that Lesufi has committed to addressing is vandalism of traffic lights, especially in the City of Johannesburg.

Rare E30 BMW 333i auctioned off for a record R3.5-million

1991 E30 BMW 325iS Evo 1 had bidders in a frenzy before being sold for R1.5-million. In the mid-1980s, BMW South Africa took it upon themselves to manufacture a limited number of the 145kW E30 BMW 333i. As a homegrown high-performance model to rule the road and possibly with a thought of hitting local racetracks too. But it was only with the advent of Opel producing their own homegrown 125kW Kadett Superboss in the early 1990s, which was 100% made to dominate local racing, that the first 145kW E30 BMW 325iS Evo 1 became a reality to take on this hot-hatch and regain their racing crown. BMW 333i sets new record Who would have thought back then that these cars would be such collector's items today, but a showstopping 1987 E30 BMW 333i in rare Henna Red with power steering stole the spotlight a recent Creative Rides auction. It hammered down at a staggering R3.5 million (including buyers commission) – a new high for the model. Also commanding fierce bidding was a 1991 BMW 325iS Evo 1, which had buyers in a frenzy before settling at an equally impressive R1.5 million. Creative Rides roared into 2025 with a triumphant start to the year, delivering stellar results in both its showroom sales and much-anticipated March online evening auction. The exclusive event drew in an impressive crowd of over 200 collectors, enthusiasts, as well as online spectators and bidders to set a new benchmark for participation. The auction featured 33 hand-picked collector cars, with BMWs emerging as the undisputed stars of the night as already mentioned. The excitement didn't end with the gavel. In the days following the auction, Creative Rides successfully concluded numerous showroom deals. Creative Rides continues to attract the attention of serious collectors and sellers alike. Most importantly, numerous rare and exciting collector cars and private collections have recently been consigned to Creative Rides and will be showcased and offered for sale throughout 2025: promising another record-breaking year for the brand. Creative Rides plans to break more records and deliver even more automotive icons to passionate buyers across the country during the rest of the year.

New Ribane-Laka School of Specialisation opens in Mamelodi, focusing on automotive and electronics skills

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi was flanked by two learners at Ribane-Laka Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Mamelodi during its launch on Wednesday. Image: Supplied The newly-launched Ribane-Laka Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Mamelodi township, rebuilt at a cost of R148 million, will offer learners an opportunity to gain skills in electronics and automotive sectors from an early stage, marking a new chapter for them. Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, announced during the school's unveiling ceremony that the school of specialisation will focus on automotive and electronics, aiming to advance the 4th Industrial Revolution. 'As much as one learner said it will improve their employability, our objective is not to be employed; it is for them to create jobs for themselves and others,' he said. He encouraged learners to make use of the skills they acquire at school to economically acquire themselves. 'Once you know how to fix a car, that skill you can actually use to benefit yourselves economically. We are giving you skills that will empower you not only in terms of a career path, but practical skills that you can use if there is a need for them,' he said. The school, converted from a secondary school, features state-of-the-art technology, including advanced laboratories for scientific experiments, modern ICT infrastructure, and a multi-purpose auditorium. He urged community members to protect the facility from vandalism and break-ins by taking care of it. 'This infrastructure must last for long; it must not only benefit the current cohort but it must benefit many for many years,' he said. Chiloane explained that the school was chosen for conversion to a school of specialisation due to its strong performance, citing a 98% pass rate in the first term of the current academic year. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said in his keynote address: 'Today we are launching education for purpose, where our children are not going to be taught things that are not going to assist them. Where our children are not going to be taught things that are going to be irrelevant when they leave the school.' He said the school earned its spot as the 36th school of specialisation due to its strong performance, rather than being arbitrarily chosen. He explained that when schools of specialisation were launched three years ago, the goal was to identify and build on high-performing secondary schools. 'We chose Ribane-Laka because at one stage they gave us 100% success,' he said. He said the Gauteng government had resolved years ago to differentiate its schools through the schools of specialisation programme, aiming to address unique challenges and avoid uniformity. 'There are many people who don't understand when we fight for equal education and education that transforms our society. They don't get it. Never before that anyone thought that a Ford Ranger would be inside the school premises not to boast but to teach our children how to repair it when it is broken. No one thought that we could have an engine inside the school premises where our children can explain its meaning; where our children can explain to you how an engine functions,' Lesufi said. Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (Tasez) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the school to offer support. Tasez leader, Bheki Zulu, said the entity has launched an academy, which will give learners opportunities to advance their studies and achieve automotive excellence. 'Over and above that we want to expose these learners to industries so that by the time they exit the school they have a fair understanding of what automotive and ICT is all about,' he said.
