Spring, St. Patrick's Day welcomed early in La Grange at Shamrock Fest
She wasn't alone, as the restaurant's 42nd annual Shamrock Fest was in full swing.
'Shamrock Fest is a really good example of the distinctive character of this community,' said Cummings, a longtime area resident and former executive director of the La Grange Business Association. 'It's all about family, and it's a tradition I look forward to every year … and best of all, it's a tradition that signals springtime is just around the corner.'
Sticking with that seasonal theme, Dave Tarman, who owns Palmer Place, 56 S. La Grange Rd., with his wife, Leslie, said this year's Shamrock Fest would extend over two weekends.
'This is like a warmup,' he said.
The celebration started out Friday evening with musician Scott Allen playing acoustic versions of classics to a light crowd amid cold rainy weather. But by Sunday the entertainment drew healthy crowds on a pleasant, warm afternoon. The festival seemed to have ushered in spring as predicted.
Saturday's performers included dance troops from the Harling School of Irish Dance and the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, as well as acoustic guitarist and singer Terry Byrne and Downers Grove-based guitarist and singer Bradley Hides.
Sunday's schedule included companies from the Onorach Mulhern Geraghty School of Irish Dance and the Bentley Academy of Irish Dance, along with singer/guitarist Michael Z and acoustic duo CK & the Gray.
Coleen Mulhern, owner and teacher at Onorach Mulhern Geraghty, said Shamrock Fest was an important part of her dancers' schedule.
'The kids love it,' Mulhern said. 'Right now, we're preparing for the world championship in Dublin, so we're doing some fundraising as well.'
Dave and Leslie Tarman also own and operate The Silo Restaurant in Lake Bluff, a pub-style pizza place in operation since 1968, that's been run by the Tarman family for more than three decades. They bought Palmer Place from the Palmer family in late 2021 and began operations in early 2022.
Dave Tarman said he and his wife had been looking all around the Chicago area for a place to expand and that they 'fell in love with La Grange.'
They kept the Palmer Place name and made sure to retain the tradition of Shamrock Fest.
'The Palmers did a great job of establishing Shamrock Fest as a western suburb tradition, so it's really well known. We're trying to expand it just a little bit,' he said. In the fourth year of the Tarman's ownership, Dave Tarman stressed that while the celebration was a big investment for them with the tent and different acts, it's still a success for the business.
'The community has really supported it,' he said.
The Tarmans plan to make entertainment a continuing feature of Palmer Place.
'We're really going to push live music Friday and Saturday night all summer,' Dave said, noting that most of his acts were from the Chicago area. 'We're also trying to bring people in who haven't played much in La Grange.'

Laguna Art Museum taps Ana Teresa Fernández to highlight Art and Nature
Laguna Art Museum has commissioned Ana Teresa Fernández to supply the headlining exhibit for its annual Art and Nature festivities this fall. Fernández, a Mexican-born, San Francisco-based artist, will produce a project to be titled 'SOS,' or, in this case, 'Save Our Seas.' The multi-phased activation will include a structural element called 'An Ocean in a Drop,' as well as a photography station, 'We Are Water,' to be displayed with the work. A collection of 800 circular mirrors will be incorporated into the featured exhibit. 'Selecting the commissioned artist for Art and Nature is always a meaningful challenge,' Laguna Art Museum Executive Director Julie Perlin Lee said in a statement accompanying the announcement. 'It is a moment to invite audiences to engage deeply with pressing global issues through the lens of creativity. 'Ana Teresa Fernández's work is bold, poetic and urgent. 'SOS' will create space for contemplation while reminding us that change begins with individual and collective action.' Art and Nature, which has coupled artistic expression with environmental awareness for a dozen years, returns to take over the museum from Nov. 1 through Nov. 10. The museum will continue to bring temporary art installations to the beach. On Sunday, Nov. 9, the museum is planning to have 800 volunteers participate in the use of Fernández's mirrored artwork to form shapes at Main Beach, which has become a trendy spot to bring art into public view. The beach served as a prime location to have hundreds take in 'Ocean Ions,' an interpretative dance collaboration between commissioned artist Christian Sampson and the Volta Collective. In 2023, Cristopher Cichocki brought 'Rising Inversion' to the sand along the hillside at Main Beach Park. The biomorphic light painting flashed a light across a phosphorescent surface, offering up a turquoise glow not unlike the phenomenon of bioluminescence. Museum officials have also decided to bring back the upcycled couture fashion show, which debuted last year. It will serve as a kick-off event to Art and Nature on Saturday, Nov. 1. There will also be a community block party the following day. After Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley secured a $50,000 grant for the museum, the local art institution will offer free admission for the entire month of November. Foley, who is the vice chair of the Board of Supervisors and represents the Fifth District, called artistic expression 'the name of the game' in Laguna Beach. 'The grant, in part, funds the museum's 13th annual Art and Nature program, … connecting more than 20,000 members of the public with thought-provoking art installations along Main Beach,' Foley said. 'I look forward to thousands of residents and visitors enjoying this one-of-a-kind — and free — visual experience.' The Art and Nature programming will continue into the new year with two indoor exhibitions. 'Silence and Solitude: Conrad Buff and the Landscapes of the American Southwest' will display the work of Buff, a modernist painter, from Sept. 20 through Jan. 20. 'Eternal Construction: Photographic Perspectives on Southern California's Built Environment' will bring together artwork from the museum's permanent collection that, in part, will foster conversations around development, land use and urbanization. Those pieces will be part of an exhibit that will be on view at the museum through Jan. 5.

Tour Lincoln Park's New Red-Sauce Italian Restaurant
is the Associate Editor for Eater's Midwest region, and has been covering Chicago's dining scene for over a decade. A fresh splash of red sauce has arrived in Lincoln Park with the debut of Dimmi Dimmi Corner Italian. The Italian American restaurant is now open at 1112 W. Armitage Avenue, giving the neighborhood a new option for pastas, pizzas, and more. Corner Restaurant Group's latest project takes over the former space of Tarantino's, a family-run Italian spot that closed this past March after a 30-year-run. The hospitality group operates local restaurants including Urbanbelly, Chef Bill Kim's Ramen Bar inside Time Out Market Chicago, and The Table at Crate, and also oversees Michael Jordan's Steak House locations across the country. Dimmi Dimmi brings Italian dining back to the corner of Armitage and Seminary Avenues. Dimmi Dimmi executive chef Matt Eckfeld, who was previously with New York-based Major Food Group and had stints at Italian hot spots like Carbone, Contessa, and ZZ's Club, has crafted a menu that nods to classic red-sauce joints while adding modern twists. Carpaccio is presented Italian beef-style — thin slices of rare beef are layered with giardiniera, beef jus aioli, and Parmesan, and served with sesame sourdough. Hamachi crudo gets a bit of a kick through almond chili crisp. And raviolo 'saltimbocca' is stuffed with guanciale, topped with prosciutto, and finished in white wine butter sauce. The pizzas are unmistakably Chicago, served tavern-style with classics like pepperoni and sausage alongside creative combos such as vodka sauce with sweet onions or mushrooms with garlic cream. The focaccia is another highlight. Pastry chef Casey Doody serves the bubbling hot bread straight out of the oven in a cast iron skillet, accompanied by optional dips like buffalo ricotta with honey and eggplant caponata. Her Italian desserts include tiramisu and affogato, plus a rich and decadent buttermilk chocolate cake. The carpaccio is prepared in the style of Italian beef. On the beverage front, expect cocktails such as a barrel-aged negroni, hazelnut espresso martini, and selection of spritzes, as well as nonalcoholic concoctions. There are also pours of amaro and grappa for a post-meal digestif. Eckfeld and the team hope Dimmi Dimmi becomes a neighborhood staple, where guests can gather over family-style meals and great food — and that journey has just begun. Check out more photos of the food and drinks below. Dimmi Dimmi Corner Italian, 1112 W. Armitage Avenue. Open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Chicken parm's on the menu. The focaccia is served piping hot. Chocolate cake provides a sweet ending. Sip on dirty and hazelnut espresso martinis and more. All linked products are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase any of these products, we may earn a commission. A word to honeyed golds, gleaming bronzes and glowing rose golds: the great jewellery trend pendulum has swung once more — and it's silver's turn in the spotlight. With all things Y2K making a comeback — jelly sandals, bootcut jeans and bubble skirts, to name a few — the silver renaissance is hardly surprising. 2025's silver jewellery is a far cry from the cheap, easily tarnished pieces of our youth. Gone are the mood rings that turn your fingers green, the rhinestone-encrusted pendants, and the bend-at-first-wear hoop earrings. Whatever your jewellery vibe — fine and dainty or bold and chunky, boho glam or gunmetal grunge — the brands ahead are creating pieces that will last. Click through to meet the top labels on our list serving up the best silver jewellery on the market. Pupari Brighton-based brand Pupari is our go-to for unique, whimsical jewellery. From joyful animal motifs to tongue-in-cheek anatomical designs, you can be sure that your piece will be one of a kind — not least because every item is handmade to order in 100% recycled sterling silver. Monica Vinader Shop This Monica Vinader really brings together the very best of the jewellery world: a commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainability, quality materials in the form of recycled sterling silver and gold vermeil, and beautiful contemporary designs. Catbird Shop This NYC-based Catbird has become the fashion set's go-to destination for fine, dainty jewellery. On the silver front, think barely-there chains, teeny-tiny pendants, ultra-thin stacking rings and delicate, engravable lockets and charms. Catbird also has its fingers firmly on the pulse, collaborating with musicians and actors like Phoebe Bridgers, Laufey and Jenny Slate, and trending TV shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty (as fans would know, it's here that Jeremy brought Belly the infamous engagement ring — the Diamond Fizz Sparkler). PDPAOLA Barcelona-based brand PDPAOLA was founded in 2015 by siblings Paola and Humbert Sasplugas with the intention of designing jewellery that transcends fleeting trends. The designers are inspired by everything from space to the natural world, creating pieces that are all about the small details. That stretches from the bold and statement-making to the delicate and dainty — from minimal, modern shapes and chunky sculptural silhouettes, to cascading, constellation-like diamonds and playful charm pendants (tiny rocketship necklace, anyone?). Mejuri Mejuri is known and loved for its gold jewellery, but its silver designs are equally desirable. From classic silver earrings and rings to the brand's iconic croissant designs, shop here if you're looking to build up your silver collection with timeless, elegant pieces that can be worn every day.
