Friendly atmosphere the key to club's award-winning away days

Falmouth Town had the honour of picking up the prestigious FSA Away Day Experience of the Year award at the National Game Awards in association with Isuzu.
The Pitching In Southern League Division One South outfit, who finished ninth in the table last term, earned acclaim for its outstanding efforts in hosting travelling fans from across the country.
The criteria for the award looked at a variety of different elements, including the warmth of a welcome, the atmosphere, the view of the game, the refreshments on offer and the facilities available, with Falmouth Town coming up trumps.
And Football Supporters Association (FSA) Network Manager for Community Owned Clubs Richard Irving explained just what set Falmouth apart, saying: 'It was very much about the atmosphere on the day.
'The welcome was particularly noted as being of a very friendly nature, and just the all-round way that the club is set up and is functioning now, seemed to appeal to a lot of our fans.
'Obviously, for many of them, it is a long way to go but clearly when they have got there, they have had a real welcome and a really good experience.'
Part of the process in selecting the winner involved the FSA canvassing members to garner their views on what their best away day experience was, and Irving believes that Falmouth, famous for their group of passionate supporters called F Troop, have set the standard for other clubs to try and emulate.
'There are many things that we could point to that Falmouth has done that appear to have appealed to people,' he continued.
'I think it is incumbent upon us to highlight those things and show what can be done.
'Many of our clubs, and there were a very large number nominated, do a really good job of providing a welcome to away fans, but this year, it is certainly Falmouth that have come out on top.'
The National Game Awards is a celebration of the non-league season - highlighting the community, fans, on-field, and off-field successes of the game outside of the English Football League.
The ceremony is held each year by the Non-League Paper, the UK's number one selling football title and the best place for your non-league news, with this year's event held at Plough Lane - home of AFC Wimbledon.

Coach's pride at winning back-to-back national rugby titles at Allianz Stadium
By Phil Campbell Old Elthamians director of rugby Gavin Lach was bursting with pride after his side won the Men's Counties 2 Championship final at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. The southeast Londoners beat Smiths Rugby 33-19 in a hard-fought contest thanks to tries from Reis Norman, Matthew Chick, Luca Petrozzi, Cam Hancock and Ben Adamson. The result meant Old Elthamians made it back-to-back triumphs at the Home of Rugby having beaten Wigan 45-22 in the Counties 3 Championship final in 2024. And it was not lost on Lach about what his side had achieved. 'Two years running, wow,' he said. 'I am so proud of the boys. We have come a long way this year. We went unbeaten last year throughout the season. 'We have only lost one game this year in the league, but obviously we are unbeaten in the cup, so it means we have only lost one in our last 57 matches, which is pretty impressive.' Old Elthamians' Norman broke the deadlock inside the opening 10 minutes as the No. 8 burst over the try line off the back of a scrum. Smiths responded midway through the first 40 minutes as Jack Davies was found in acres of space on the left wing and made no mistake when he dotted down. Old Elthamians retook the lead soon after however, when Chick went over from close-range to give his team the lead at half time. Petrozzi's quick tap-and-go allowed him to extend Old Elthamians' advantage two minutes into the second period, with fly-half Joe Leigh making it a hat-trick of successful conversions. Smiths reduced their arrears through captain Ben Hawker's converted effort to leave the score 21-14 with approximately half an hour left to play. But tries from Hancock and Adamson put the game beyond doubt, with John Bryant's score late on little more than a consolation for Smiths. Lach also explained that he hopes the victory can provide his side with a springboard ahead of next season. He continued: 'It did last year, so hopefully it can again. We will wait and see what the summer brings and where we are to start the season but let us hope so. 'This competition is great. It is sponsored by the RFU, and clubs should enter it because it gives players a day out, it really is massive.'

Nighthawks fly high at top of Evening League
Falmouth's Midweek Nighthawks extended their unbeaten run with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Wendron Super Goats in the Mining Division Evening League South Section. Sponsored by Balti Curries, the Nighthawks now sit clear at the top of the table with maximum points from their opening matches. After being asked to bowl first, Falmouth kept Wendron to 131 from their 20 overs. Paddy Varker was the pick of the attack, claiming 3 for 24, while Jacob Stephens also bagged three wickets, despite an earlier dropped catch that could have proved costly. Stefan Churcher chipped in with a tidy four-over spell for just 21 runs, but Trevor Ward struggled to find his normal rhythm, finishing wicketless and going for 38 runs. Midway through the innings, a dog made an unscheduled appearance on the pitch, briefly interrupting play and giving the crowd something else to cheer. Wendron's innings was anchored by an unbeaten 33 from D Probert and an explosive 31* off just 12 balls from T Orchard. But the visitors lost regular wickets and struggled to build momentum after a steady start. In reply, Falmouth's top order made light work of the chase. Stefan Churcher (35), Ashley Searle (31*), and Matthew Stephens (32*) all retired not out, guiding the hosts to 135 for 3 in just 15.2 overs. With strong performances across the squad and a growing list of players staking their claim, there'll be stiff competition for places in the side ahead of next week's fixture. Falmouth face St Gluvias CC next, hoping to keep their winning streak intact and maintain their spot at the summit.

Peaks honoured as memorable cup heroics recognised at awards
Tamworth manager Andy Peaks was honoured to see his side's FA Cup heroics celebrated with the FA Best Cup Run of the Year award at the Non-League Paper's National Game Awards in association with Isuzu. The National League North champions defeated Macclesfield ahead of back-to-back upsets of League One pair Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion to reach the FA Cup third round, where they were drawn at home to Tottenham Hotspur. In front of a global TV audience, Tamworth held Ange Postecoglou's cast and crew of seasoned internationals scoreless for 90 minutes before falling to defeat in extra-time, capturing the hearts of the nation along the way. Peaks reflected: 'It was a really good day. I was looking forward to it and I wasn't sure what team they would select, whether it would be a mix and match but when we realised that their players were all internationals coming off the bus, it was unbelievable. 'We did well to get there and beat some big clubs like Macclesfield, Huddersfield and Burton so for me it was a case of enjoying it. I was so proud of everyone to get that far and I said to the team 'don't let it pass you by, just enjoy it and remember this occasion forever'. 'We matched Spurs for long periods and we were disappointed to lose but proud of what we achieved. It was an unbelievable atmosphere and brilliant for the town and non-league football.' 'There were some great people here and it's testament to the Non-League Paper and what they do.'
