Chandigarh/Mohali: It was a tough day for firefighters as three blazes were reported in the Tricity on Friday. While two fires were reported from Chandigarh, another incident took place in Mohali.
Fire erupted on the second floor of a residence in Karsan Colony, Sector 52, Chandigarh, when a 4-year-old child was present inside the unit. Alert neighbours successfully rescued the child before the arrival of the fire brigade. The fire brigade managed to extinguish the blaze during a 30-minute operation.
According to reports, the child was alone at home while the parents were away. Neighbours spotted the flames and promptly alerted the fire department. Though the precise cause remains undetermined, sources indicate the fire originated within the house, despite no clear evidence during the operation.
The fire consumed bedding, furniture and various household items within the rented premises. Despite four fire engines arriving from various stations across the city, a single tender proved sufficient to contain the situation. The affected family has reported the loss of cash that was stored within the residence.

"A family was staying on rent on the second floor of the house. Parents, who were labourers, had gone out possibly for some work after leaving the child at home. The fire team saved other floors of the house by dousing the fire on time. Over a dozen firemen worked hard in the operation, and no human injury was reported," an official said.
Another fire broke out at the New India Insurance office, located on the third floor of a building in Sector 34, on Friday morning. Though the fire was controlled in 10 minutes, thick smoke engulfed the area, which took time to clear. No injury was reported, but some documents, furniture, and ACs were gutted in the fire.
Water sprinklers prevented the fire from spreading. The firemen had to break a couple of glass windows to release the smoke. The incident occurred around 9 am. Nobody was in the office, and the road and parking area were clear, which allowed fire vehicles easy access to the spot.
"No wiring of the office was found open, though it seems that a fluctuation in power may be the reason. However, it is not clear what led to the fire incident. Around 14 firemen carried out the operation," an official said.
The third incident was reported from Mohali where a massive fire broke out at a pizza outlet in Sector 82 in the early hours on Friday, reducing property and goods worth lakhs to ashes. The fire reportedly started during the night and rapidly engulfed the entire showroom. Owner Ankur Aggarwal said the blaze caused an estimated loss of Rs 30 lakh.
According to the local fire department, a distress call was received at around 4 am. "It took approximately 30 minutes to bring the flames under control," said a fire officer at the scene. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have triggered the incident.
Among the destroyed items were four motorcycles, an Activa scooter used for deliveries, a generator, air conditioners, and other electronic appliances. The interior of the showroom was also extensively damaged.

Minor repairs fine but don't alter heritage character: Panel to school
1 2 3 Kolkata: Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and West Bengal Heritage Commission conducted a second inspection of the La Martiniere schools on Sunday afternoon. They informed the school authorities that they would not need to seek permission for minor repairs such as fixing sewerage and drainage pipes, replacing sanitaryware and broken tiles, and changing electrical wires. The officials also requested the school to submit two lists — one detailing short-term repair requirements and another for long-term needs. They assured that the civic body would try to clear these requests expeditiously, provided they did not lead to structural changes or alter the buildings' heritage character. Additionally, the two schools will seek permission to install floodlights on the playgrounds. A KMC engineer and a commission representative visited the school around noon on Sunday, following a Calcutta High Court order for a thorough inspection. This was after the court found a report submitted after an earlier inspection last Monday to be inadequate. On Sunday, the visiting officials checked all the areas highlighted by the school, including seepage from the roof, damp patches, cracks in walls, plaster peeling off the ceiling, and broken tiles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 75% off installation for LeafFilter LeafFilter Gutter Protection Get Rates Undo A KMC official said while they have asked the school to seek approval for repairs, they will halt all work if any heritage structure is affected. La Martiniere secretary Surpiyo Dhar, who has written multiple letters to KMC over the past couple of months seeking nod to undertake repairs during summer vacation, said the officials were extremely cooperative on Sunday. They appeared to understand the gravity of the situation and seemed eager to help the school carry out the repairs. "The case will be heard in court on June 10. But we expect a go-ahead from KMC even before that, as the court clearly stated that if the urgency of the situation requires it, KMC can give its permission without waiting for a further order from the court," said Dhar. KMC issued a stop-work notice to the school last Nov after an alumni association pointed out that the school had covered its heritage steps, which had names of past students engraved on them, with marble tiles.
