The housemate of missing 17-year-old Pheobe Bishop has reportedly been taken into custody nearly three weeks after the teenager vanished while heading to the airport to catch a booked flight in Bundaberg, Australia
James Wood, 34, has been assisting police with their investigation, but hasn't been charged, according to multiple reports
Hours before he was taken into custody, Wood spoke to Daily Mail Australia about the day he and his partner took Bishop to the airport on May 15The housemate of missing Australian teenager Pheobe Bishop has been taken into custody almost three weeks after she disappeared after failing to check in for a booked flight, according to reports.
On Wednesday, June 4, Queensland Police confirmed James Wood, 34, had been taken into custody, but no charges against him have been made, per local outlets including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), news.com.au and 9 News.
"A 34-year-old man has been taken into custody and is currently assisting police with enquiries as part of ongoing investigations into the disappearance of Pheobe Bishop," Queensland Police told PEOPLE in an email.
"No charges have been laid," they continued, adding that they could not confirm the identity of the man who had been placed into custody.
The update came shortly after police paused the physical search for Bishop, news.com.au reported, after she was last seen on Thursday, May 15 at around 8:30 a.m. local time after being dropped off to catch a flight at Bundaberg Airport in Queensland.
Queensland Police Detective Acting Inspector Ryan Thompson previously said that the teen was dropped off near the airport by "associates" but didn't enter the terminal, according to the ABC, adding that she "had a flight booked to Brisbane and then on to WA [Western Australia] to visit a friend."
According to Daily Mail Australia, Wood spoke to the outlet just hours before his police custody about driving Bishop toward the airport with his partner, Tanika Bromley, on the morning of Bishop's disappearance.
Wood claimed that Bishop, who was reportedly planning to get on a flight to see her boyfriend, had been "furious" after sleeping "through her alarm" on the morning of her trip.
Wood said Bishop had been worried about what to wear, adding that "she was so worked up about seeing her boyfriend for the first time and she wanted to look good," per the outlet, so he said he gave her a pair of new gray tracksuit bottoms to wear.

He said Bishop had been concerned about missing the flight, the outlet reported.
"We just wanted to get her checked in and thought if we can just get there she will calm down," Wood told Daily Mail Australia of the drive. "Tanika grabbed her makeup bag next to her and passed it back and told her to take anything she needed."
"Her plane was stopping in Brisbane and we told her that the airport had everything she needed and she can take her time and do the makeup in the toilets," Wood added, per the outlet, stating that they ended up stopping the car on Airport Drive, just over half a mile from the terminal.
"We wanted to give her five minutes - give her her own space to do what she needed to do," he told the outlet, adding, "We walked to the end, it was maybe five minutes, maybe it was three minutes or maybe it was eight but that's about how long we were gone."
He claimed that when the pair returned to the vehicle, Bishop and her bag were gone, according to the publication. Wood stated that they looked for the teen for a while, but when they couldn't find her, they assumed she'd boarded the flight.
The Gin Gin home where Bishop had been living prior to her disappearance was previously declared a crime scene, according to police.
Police also said that a gray Hyundai ix35 was also an active crime scene, with officers previously asking the public for help finding dashcam and CCTV footage of the car, license plate number 414EW3, 'near the Airport Drive and Samuels Road area in Bundaberg and also the Gin Gin area on May 15.'
Bishop's mom, Kylie Johnson, has been posting multiple updates on Facebook amid her daughter's disappearance, as well as reading an official family statement in a video recently released by police.
'Hi, I'm Kylie. I'm Pheobe's mom. Our lives have been changed for the worse after the sudden disappearance of my daughter, who was last seen on May 15,' she began in the video, which was posted on a crime watch Facebook group for the Queensland area on Saturday, May 31.
'This is a pain no person or family should ever have to experience,' she continued. 'Pheobe was a beautiful, loving, kind person, and every day not knowing where she has been is devastating for us.'
Johnson thanked police for their investigation and her community for its support during the speech, as well as making a final, emotional plea, while publicly considering the chance that her daughter was no longer alive.
"I still hold hope that Pheobe will come home, but I have to consider the possibility that she also won't,' she said in the video. 'If the worst-case scenario has happened, I at least need to know where she is resting. I need to know where Pheobe is. My daughter wouldn't just disappear.'
'Someone knows something and as a mom, I am asking you to come forward with your information,' Johnson added.

World reacts to Israeli strike on Iran over nuclear programme

(Reuters) -Israel said early on Friday it had struck Iranian nuclear targets to block Tehran from developing atomic weapons, and Iranian media and witnesses reported explosions including at the country's main uranium enrichment facility. Calling it a "decisive moment in Israel's history", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was also targeting Iranian scientists working on a nuclear bomb and missile factories in an operation that would continue for days. Israel declared a state of emergency in anticipation of retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Tehran. Here are some reactions from top officials and governments around the world: U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO "Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region." "Let me be clear: Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel." AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER PENNY WONG "Australia is alarmed by the escalation between Israel and Iran. This risks further destabilising a region that is already volatile. We call on all parties to refrain from actions and rhetoric that will further exacerbate tensions. "We all understand the threat of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile program represents a threat to international peace and security, and we urge the parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy." NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER CHRISTOPHER LUXON "It's a really unwelcome development in the Middle East. The risk of miscalculation is high. That region does not need any more military action, and risk associated with that." (Compiled by Sonali Paul; Editing by Christian Schmollinger)

Controversial $350,000 hunting plan for 16 Aussie parks

A $350,000 government splurge on shooting wild kangaroos roaming in parks surrounding an Australian city has opponents up in arms. They say it's time for the ACT government to get smarter about how it manages the native marsupials, rather than spending up big on bullets. When darkness falls and walkers and picnickers return home from 16 grassy reserves that surround Canberra, shooters will move in. They're contracted to shoot thousands of kangaroos this year to manage what it says are 'environmental, economic and social impacts' caused by 'overpopulation'. 'Leading scientists and land managers with decades of experience in ecology, land management, and kangaroo management have calculated an operational target of 2,981 kangaroos to be removed,' an ACT government spokesperson told Yahoo News. Culling kangaroos so close to a city is a complex operation, meaning the government has to pay for staff overtime, contractors, planning, monitoring and equipment. Gwenda Griffiths from Save Canberra's Kangaroos thinks the money could be better spent on creating overpasses or underpasses. This would mean they aren't hit by cars when they leave the reserves and the grasslands they live on don't become denuded. Since Canberra was established as a city, the reserves where kangaroos live have become surrounded by development, so the only way in or out for animals is via roads. 'It's not rocket science and we're not reinventing the wheel, these overpasses are used successfully elsewhere around the world,' Griffiths told Yahoo News. 'Sure, they're expensive, but they could benefit humans as well.' Doing this would not only reduce the risk of conflict, it would allow kangaroos to naturally traverse the landscape so numbers don't build up in reserves. This short-term expenditure could reduce any ongoing need for yearly culls, freeing up more money in future for important issues like health and education. "We need to stop thinking the only solution is to shoot them. We need to get better at sharing the environment," Griffiths said. Griffiths doesn't believe there should be any need for culls in Australia, and that it's on planners to properly design cities that allow for wildlife movement. "They talk about welfare concerns that when there's a drought, they starve, and when there's a rain they overproduce. But for thousands of years, kangaroos have lived in varying conditions and have regulated their own reproduction," she said. While shooting remains the government's dominant method of control, it has also invested in fertility controls. So far this year, just 18 females have been treated with the GonaCon vaccine, but there are plans to expand its use. 'GonaCon contraceptive vaccine is currently being used at three nature reserves. To reduce population growth, we are aiming to treat between 60 per cent and 80 per cent of the adult females at these sites with GonaCon,' a government spokesperson said. Females only need to be treated once so there aren't ongoing costs with this population control method. 'Most of the GonaCon treatments required at these sites were administered in previous years, so only a low number of additional treatments were required this year to maintain the desired number of infertile females in these populations,' the government said. The government's use of the carcasses also remains controversial, because it's a rare jurisdiction where there isn't commercial harvesting of their meat and skins. While some bodies are given to Traditional Custodians for cultural use, and some are used in baits to kill native dingos and invasive foxes, the majority are disposed of. Jon Stewart Calls ABC a ‘F–king Joke' for Firing Terry Moran Over Anti-Trump Tweet

Jon Stewart did not mince his words while addressing ABC's firing of Terry Moran on Thursday's episode of his 'The Weekly Show' podcast. Asked if he agreed with ABC's decision to fire Moran after the correspondent called Trump and his White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller 'world-class' haters, 'The Daily Show' host did not hold back. 'Of course not,' Stewart said. 'So stupid. No, for God's sake.' He added: 'Literally every day on Fox News they're taking stuff out of context or their people are saying utterly vicious things about democratic politicians. The entire thing is because ABC clings to this facade that they somehow exist in a bubble outside all of this.' Stewart wrapped up his thoughts on the network's choice succinctly, 'It's a joke. They're a f–king joke.' Late Saturday night, Moran posted on X in a since-deleted pair of tweets that Miller and Trump were 'world-class' haters 'dripping with hatred.' 'The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism,' he wrote in the first missive. 'Yes, he is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. But that's not what's interesting about Miller. It's not brains. It's bile. Miler is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He's a world-class hater.' After ABC News suspended him on Sunday, the network released a statement Tuesday sharing that they had permanently cut ties with the longtime correspondent and journalist. 'We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision to not renew,' a spokesperson told TheWrap of their contract with the journalist. 'At ABC News, we hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness and professionalism, and we remain committed to delivering straightforward, trusted journalism.' Moran, however, plans to continue his work. He announced Wednesday that he launched a Substack to cover 'this time of such trouble for our country.' 'For almost 28 years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC news. And as you may have heard, I'm not there anymore. I'm here with you on Substack, this amazing space, and I can't wait to get at it, to get at the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country,' Moran said in in a video posted Wednesday afternoon. 'I'm going to be reporting and interviewing and just sharing with you and hoping to hear from you as well, so it'll be a few days, maybe a little bit longer. Gotta get some stuff sorted out but can't wait to see,' he concluded. The post Jon Stewart Calls ABC a 'F–king Joke' for Firing Terry Moran Over Anti-Trump Tweet appeared first on TheWrap.
