AI videos push Combs trial misinformation, researchers say
The sensational AI-driven channels have amassed nearly 70 million views from roughly 900 videos about the musician over the past year, according to data compiled by Indicator, a US publication investigating digital deception.
The videos typically feature AI-generated thumbnails showing celebrities on the witness stand alongside images of Diddy, often paired with fabricated quotes.
One channel called Pak Gov Update uploaded a nearly 30-minute-long video titled "Jay-Z Breaks His Silence on Diddy Controversy," which features a thumbnail of the American rapper.
The thumbnail shows Jay-Z breaking down in tears and holding up a CD above a fabricated quote: "I WILL BE DEAD SOON."
Pak Gov Update has uploaded similar videos with fake testimonies attributed to other celebrities such as the American comedian Kevin Hart and the singer and songwriter Usher.
It began posting content about the closely watched trial in recent weeks. The channel previously posted Urdu content about Pakistan.
"Pak Gov Update is one of 26 YouTube channels identified by Indicator that have used a mix of false claims and AI slop to cash in on the Diddy trial," said Craig Silverman, co-founder of Indicator.
YouTube did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.
AI slop refers to often low-quality visual content –- generated using cheap and widely available artificial intelligence tools –- that increasingly appears to be flooding social media sites, blurring the lines between reality and fiction.
Many content creators on YouTube and TikTok offer paid courses on how to monetize viral AI slop on tech platforms, many of which have reduced their reliance on human fact-checkers and scaled back content moderation.
Combs, 55, faces life in prison if convicted on five federal charges that include racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation for purposes of prostitution.
Conspiracy theories and falsehoods surrounding his trial have flooded social media sites in recent weeks, threatening to shroud the facts and undermine real witnesses, experts say.
A song titled "I Lost Myself at a Diddy Party" and falsely attributed to Justin Bieber recently garnered millions of views across social media platforms, sparking a wave of conspiracy theories about the relationship between the two celebrities.
An audio clip of the song, which features lyrics about Bieber losing his innocence after attending one of Combs's parties, was likely created using an AI tool, according to the disinformation watchdog NewsGuard.
Also gaining traction online was a manipulated image of Combs and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sitting next to US President Donald Trump on a couch with young women.

The video shows a line of uniformed police officers kneeling and raising their fists in the air in front of a crowd of protesters, before standing to offer handshakes and hugs. Similar posts spread the same clip in June 2025, as demonstrations against deportation raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) flared in cities across the country, with Los Angeles taking center stage following Trump's deployment of National Guard and US military troops to the Democratic stronghold. ICE has scaled up deportation efforts under the Republican president, who made expelling undocumented immigrants a key priority for his second White House term. Dramatic images have shown federal agents, often masked and sometimes armed with assault rifles, chasing down migrants at courthouses, farms and on the streets. The video claimed to show Omaha law enforcement taking a knee is old and unrelated to illegal immigration, however. Reverse image searches revealed that the Omaha Police Department shared the footage June 2, 2020 (archived here). At the time, racial justice protesters were rallying across the country following the murder of Floyd, who died at the hands of a white police officer during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Officer Michael Pecha, a spokesperson with the Omaha Police Department's public information office, confirmed to AFP that the clip is "from protests in 2020." "We have not had any large-scale protests in Omaha recently," Pecha said in a July 17, 2025 email. Pecha referred AFP to a 2020 civil unrest report, which explained that the department uploaded the footage to debunk online claims that an officer had performed a Nazi salute (archived here). "In an effort to diffuse tensions near 13th and Howard, a group of officers and National Guard members kneeled with the protesters," it reads. The report said the incident took place June 1, 2020. Another video posted to TikTok at the time shows the moment from a different angle (archived here). The act of kneeling has become associated with advocacy against racism and police brutality in the United States, largely inspired by former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began taking a knee during pre-game performances of the US national anthem in 2016. The mischaracterization of the Omaha video comes just over a month after Police Chief Todd Schmaderer warned Nebraskans to look out for misinformation in response to a fake post that purported to show the department advising residents of future ICE raids (archived here, and here). AFP previously debunked social media posts falsely claiming a video of a Los Angeles Police Department officer kneeling had taken place during June 2025 protests against Trump's policies. France to release Lebanese militant Abdallah after 40 years in prison
A French court ordered the conditional release of a Lebanese leftist militant on Thursday after more than 40 years in detention in France. Georges Ibrahim Abdallah was serving a life sentence for complicity in the murders of two diplomats, one American and one Israeli, in Paris in 1982. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled that Abdallah, who has been imprisoned in France since his arrest in 1984, can be released next Friday, provided he leaves France and never returns, judicial authorities stated. His lawyer, Jean-Louis Chalanset, told reporters that Abdallah wants to return to Lebanon upon his release and remains "a communist militant who supports the Palestinian struggle and fights against the invasion of his country by Israel." He described Abdallah as the longest-held political prisoner in Europe. "He has never renounced his convictions," Chalanset said, adding that US authorities had lobbied the Paris court to reject the 74-year-old's release request. "So it's also a political victory, even after nearly 41 years in detention, against the United States." 'Political scandal' Abdallah's lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset welcomed the decision, saying, "It's both a judicial victory and a political scandal that he was not released earlier."
