Q A question regarding the UK's ETA (electronic travel authorisation) scheme. I am planning to meet up with my daughter in Edinburgh. She is Luxembourgish but lives in the Republic of Ireland and will be flying from Cork to Edinburgh and back. My understanding is that the ETA is not required for travel within the common travel area. But I am concerned about airlines being overzealous in their interpretation of the rules at the boarding gate. What are your thoughts?

A From Wednesday 2 April, most foreign visitors to the UK will need an ETA. This online permit, which costs £10 (soon to be £16), is required by those who currently do not need a visa to visit the UK.
Fortunately your daughter is one of relatively few people who are exempt. As you say, the common travel area – comprising the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands – confers extra rights on anyone who has the good fortune to be Irish, as well as foreign visitors who are resident in Ireland.
The Irish government says: 'Legal residents of Ireland, from a nationality that does not usually need a visa to visit the UK (eg European and US nationals), do not need an ETA when traveling within the common travel area, if they can show proof of legal residency.'
I understand your concern about airlines being overzealous in their interpretation of the rules – we have seen many such cases in the context of post-Brexit passport arrangements.
In my experience, though, checks for flights between Ireland and Great Britain are much more relaxed – as they should be, given the freedom of movement the common travel area confers.
Your daughter could usefully take proof of her residence in Ireland, but I would be surprised if she is asked to show it.
Incidentally, one concern of the UK government is that many holidaymakers in Ireland will stray across the border into Northern Ireland, even though they don't have an ETA. There will be no routine checks.
Q I saw you say on BBC Rip Off Britain that when you check luggage in for a flight, you have to assume that you'll never ever see it again. Why did you say that?

A I urge passengers to presume their checked-in bag will vanish. That advice aims to put them in the right mindset when packing for a trip by air. When you check in a bag for a flight, you are reliant on the airline and the ground handlers transporting it safely and securely to your destination. Your luggage is very likely to travel on the same flight as you and appear on the baggage carousel at the far end.
Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen: a leading budget airline tells me that one in 2,000 of its passengers' bags goes astray. That is on a 'point-to-point' carrier; when you book a connecting flight via a big hub airport, the chances of your possessions being misrouted multiply. According to the latest report by the aviation data specialists at Sita, seven bags go missing for every 1,000 checked in.
When luggage fails to appear on cue, there is no need to panic. Most passengers are reunited with their stray bags within a few days, with the airline delivering it to their home or holiday location. Sometimes, though, baggage can simply disappear. The bag's label and all other identification might be torn off while passing through the baggage system. (I urge people to tape a label with their contact details inside their case because at least then baggage handlers can open it and trace the owner.) Or the bag may be stolen from the carousel; at most airports there is no need to 'reconcile' each item with the passenger's luggage tag, so villains can swipe a suitcase and scarper.
Whatever the cause, every day thousands of people learn their possessions are presumed lost forever. That is annoying if all the bag contains is unwashed laundry; for priceless possessions, the experience can be heartbreaking. I almost always travel with cabin baggage only – especially on a trip involving a change of plane. If you have to check stuff in, then choose a direct flight if one is available and is not too expensive. And keep everything important in your hand luggage.
Q I am travelling with friends to Seoul, South Korea, next month. They are really keen on making a day trip to Busan. It's recommended online but most of the bloggers say you need at least two days. Unfortunately, we only have time for a day trip. Should we go for it?

A For anyone who loves cities, Seoul is an excellent choice: startling modern architecture, tranquil temples and a huge number of dining possibilities, almost all serving excellent food at implausibly low prices. All of this applies equally to South Korea's second city, Busan, which has the advantage of being a port city thereby increasing the allure by a couple of notches. But I side with the bloggers: it is more than 200 miles away, and the very fastest train takes two and a half hours each way, meaning the trip will subtract five hours of your precious sightseeing time in Korea and give you no time to enjoy the nearby beaches that are an essential part of the Busan experience.
That's not to say a day trip would be unrewarding. You can absorb the metropolitan energy and enjoy the diversity of the waterfront (Busan is much closer to Japan than to Seoul). Be hypnotised by the hyperactive harbour. Then go a short way east to Oryukdo Skywalk, sticking out from a cliff. Eating is an essential part of the Busan experience: try the excellent seafood or dwaeji gukbap (a pork soup).
Perhaps, though, I can steer you towards an easier (and much cheaper) day trip that you can do on city transport from Seoul. It is a triangular excursion that you should start with a half-hour train journey south to Suwon: a smaller city, with an impressive fortress offering walks along the walls. Look out for street art, and walk back to the station along the canal path.
Suwon station is on the extremely expansive Seoul Metro, and you can skirt around the capital on your way to the city of Incheon – a journey of around 80 minutes. The older parts of the city are scenic and include a substantial Chinatown. Once you have had your fill of serenity, back on the Metro and the ride into Seoul.
Q We were stuck in Madeira last month when the inbound plane from Belfast diverted to Gran Canaria, where it stayed overnight. We finally got home 30 hours late. Jet2 has rejected our compensation claim, citing 'extraordinary circumstances'. Should we fight on?

A Bluntly, no. Anyone tempted to fly to or from this exquisite Portuguese island should be aware that there is a small but significant chance that their flight may not keep to schedule. Every month or so, in my observation, Madeira's spectacular airport closes to arriving aircraft due to adverse Atlantic weather. The runway is partially built on stilts and is exposed to high winds from the ocean.
Holding on the ground for hours before departure to Madeira is not unknown, and neither is diverting to the Canary Islands or mainland Portugal. In your case, the aircraft waited in Belfast for the Madeira weather to improve, then flew to the island – only for the pilots to find conditions exceeded the permitted maxima for a landing. A lightning strike on the aborted approach necessitated a thorough technical check on arrival at the chosen diversion airport, Gran Canaria. Meanwhile, you were provided with a hotel in Madeira's capital, Funchal.
You contend that, had the inbound flight LS317 not been held at Belfast, 'this unfortunate malaise would not have occurred'. You may be right – but trust me, Jet2 would have done all it could to try to ensure people reached their holiday destination on the outbound flight and were brought home as close to the original schedule as possible. I appreciate it was a frustrating experience for you – who wants to spend a day out at the airport rather than enjoying the island? – but I cannot see any claim succeeding. You can argue that adverse weather in Madeira is hardly 'extraordinary', but the law lets Jet 2 of the hook. In any event, the ariline will have spent tens of thousands of pounds on customer care, and will not be inclined to hand out any more. Check your travel insurance, though: mine hands out £25 for each eight hours in delayed arrival. In your case that would be a handy £75.

There is something very appealing about simple wooden interiors, which make me want to put down my coat, grab a pew and glug down a refreshing glass of wine. A rustic table and a wine rack, visible from outside, was proving difficult to resist, especially as the sun was shining on a warm Ruthin evening. In the seventies, wine bars emerged as a concept, often seen as a more relaxed and sophisticated alternative to traditional, male-dominated pubs. But what makes a good wine bar now? Well, there's the wine, for starters. Jacques offers a vast selection of classic reds from Bordeaux and Burgundy. Or, you can sip a white wine from the Loire Valley region or swig a fizzy rose from Provence. The bar was absolutely heaving with bottles of the stuff, along with sparkling champagne and a host of different Belgium or European beers. The atmosphere is relaxed; the lights are dim with soft jazz playing in the background. There are paintings of French streets on the wall with peacock art cushions on the pews. We were sat on mis-matched paint splattered chairs, which give off a shabby chic relaxed vibe, and noticed a small roof terrace upstairs, where a few people were chatting and taking advantage of the good weather. Jacques wine bar has gone for Parisian flair with a menu influenced by French classics, which don't really need re-inventing. They include baked Camembert, frog legs or French onion soup for starters or baguettes with various French cheeses for lunch. There are plenty of sharing dishes such as a charcuterie platter, with a selection of cured meats and pâtés, served with homemade chutneys, bread and crackers or a selection of French cheeses. For mains, there are French classics such as beef bourguignon with tender braised beef in red wine with garlic, and puree de pommes de terre or ratatouille with stewed vegetables in a rich tomato sauce served with a warm crusty baguette. We noticed that some customers on the next table ordered the 'Moules Marinières' which was flamed mussels in a bacon butter sauce, with pickled lemon and parsley. They used a crusty bit of their baguette to mop the sauce up and appeared to be really enjoying it. On a Sunday, Jacques offer a variety of roasts served French style, such as a half roast chicken, roast potatoes, seasonal veg, purée de pommes de terre. However, we noticed a deal chalked on a blackboard, which offered their signature Steak Frites with a pint of beer or a glass of wine for just £15. It seemed too good of an offer to turn down. We decided to choose a glass of house white and a glass of house red to go with our Steak Frites. The white wine was tangy and crisp whilst the red wine was fruity and bold. The steak was cooked to our liking 'Medium rare' and was juicy, tender and succulent. The steak knife cut through the pan seared steak like butter and all the juices and flavour sizzled throughout the meat in a perfect haze of rouge. The steak butter was absolutely delicious and we were later told it was a secret recipe, although it seemed to be a combination of bacon, paprika and sage sauce. We were both given a generous portion of French fries and they were crispy and very morish due to a little hint of seasoning. We had a simple mixed lettuce salad on the side of both our plates. We were too happily stuffed for dessert but could see that they offered choices such as lemon tart, served with shortbread and ice cream, salted caramel chocolate pot or cheesecake for around £9. Instead, we sipped our wine and let our food go down as we were in no particular rush to leave. It reminded me of the perfect Parisian evening after a day of sightseeing and winding down with a glass of red. I half expected a man in a stripy t shirt to cycle past the window with some onions over his shoulder. Jacques wine bar has live music at the weekends and also put on a terrific roast. We saw notices for bottomless brunches for £25, which promised cocktails and chaos and a little French mischief for two hours. Yep, this little laid back wine bar has a certain 'Je ne sais quoi' and will leave you feeling full, happy and perhaps a little bit tipsy. The Facts Steak Frites with a glass of wine £15 with a service surcharge of 10% (£3) bringing the total to £33 Atmosphere - Va-Va Voom Car Parking - Limited Street parking or public car park just off St Peter's Square. Service - Confident and laid backed.

Prestwick Airport flights win and Royal Bank of Scotland journey

Ian Forgie, chief executive of Prestwick Airport, hailed this agreement with China Southern Air Logistics as a 'game changer'. In doing so, he echoed the phrase used by Nico Le Roux, head of cargo operations at Prestwick, about e-commerce flights in February, after the airport won major business from Hong Kong. It has been fascinating to observe, and write about, Prestwick Airport's big push on the cargo side of its business, and its focus on winning e-commerce traffic. Mr Le Roux in February revealed the airport's expectations that cargo revenues would more than treble to in excess of £10 million a year. He was speaking hours before the arrival of the first Hong Kong Air Cargo flight at Prestwick, bringing packages ordered by UK and Irish consumers on the likes of the Temu, SHEIN, and TikTok platforms. Cargo revenues at the airport, which is known officially as Glasgow Prestwick Airport, totalled £3.228 million in the year to March 31, 2024. Mr Le Roux revealed his expectation that cargo revenues would be more than treble that level in the airport's financial year to March 31, 2026, on the back of recent new business wins. The agreement between Prestwick Airport and China Southern Air Logistics has seen the carrier start scheduled cargo flights at four per week between Guangzhou and Prestwick, with plans for this to increase to a daily service. The first of these scheduled flights landed on May 16 at Prestwick Airport, which described the freighter services as 'a new direct export route to China from Scotland for high-value Scottish seafood and whisky'. Prestwick Airport, when it announced the arrival of China Southern Air Logistics on May 16, noted it had invested £2.3 million in equipment in the past 12 months. It also highlighted its continued investment in ground-handling equipment and cool chain supply facilities, as well as the building of its workforce, to maximise its capabilities in handling large freighters. The investment at Prestwick, which has included equipment to handle the wide-door Airbus A350 cargo aircraft, was plain in February when I went airside with Mr Le Roux. My subsequent column in The Herald on May 21 declared: 'It is most encouraging to see all the planning and investment at Prestwick Airport coming together.' It added: 'The airport makes a very important economic contribution to Ayrshire and more broadly to Scotland, one that is too often disregarded by the politically motivated carpers. These detractors also seem to forget that the airport supports an aerospace cluster in and around it which employs about 4,000 people, or maybe they just do not really care about this. 'Prestwick Airport's growing success is all the more reason for the Scottish Government to ensure that any sale is made with the future prosperity of this strategic asset, including on the employment front, in mind.' The column observed there was no reason to believe this would not be the case. When I asked Kate Forbes about the future of Prestwick Airport in April, in the wake of First Minister John Swinney confirming the existence of an 'active bid' in late March, she said: 'We have obviously saved Prestwick Airport more than a decade ago, precisely because of its strategic importance to the Scottish economy. 'If and when Prestwick is sold, it will be for the new owner to develop a business case.' Read more Deputy First Minister Ms Forbes, who highlighted Prestwick Airport's cargo operations, declared: 'We have set out very clear lines that we want Prestwick to continue to operate as an airport.' The institution formerly known as Royal Bank of Scotland (now NatWest Group) has also been in focus in the past month as it has headed towards full private ownership. In a column in The Herald, I reflected on having covered the institution's rollercoaster ride over the past three decades. This article addressed the 'perennial big question' in the mid-1990s, observing: 'Back in the mid-1990s, Royal Bank was progressing solidly but the big question which perennially hung over it, as it did over rival Bank of Scotland, was whether the institution would be swallowed up by one of the big London players.' The column went on to recall the frenetic bid battle to buy big four UK bank NatWest between these two Edinburgh clearing banks, in which Royal Bank of Scotland ultimately prevailed. The column highlighted the 'good times' that followed. It then recalled, in 2007, Royal Bank's hostile bid, in a consortium with Santander and Fortis, for Dutch bank ABN Amro. The column observed: 'By the time the acquisition of ABN Amro was completed by the Royal Bank consortium in October 2007, there had already been signs of what turned out to be the emergence of the global financial crisis that was going to take a lurch for the worse less than a year later with the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008.' In autumn 2008, Royal Bank had to be bailed out by the UK taxpayer, ultimately to the tune of £45.5 billion. The article noted: 'It was not entirely clear at the time but this was to mark the beginning of the end of Royal Bank being an institution based in Scotland.' Mulling the shift of control to London, the column observed: 'Stephen Hester succeeded Mr Goodwin as chief executive of Royal Bank amid the global financial crisis. He appeared acutely aware of Royal Bank's importance to Scotland, visiting The Herald's offices soon after taking up the role. New Zealander Ross McEwan then took up the top job in late 2013. 'There were signs that the nerve centre was gradually moving to London. However, it was only in the immediate wake of Alison Rose's appointment as chief executive in late 2019 that it could be stated definitively that this had happened. The key was that her contract stated she would be based in London. Paul Thwaite, who succeeded Dame Alison in summer 2023 and looks to have done a good job in raising the institution's profits, is also based in London and has made no bones about this.' In February 2020, not long after Dame Alison took the top job, a momentous name change was revealed. It was announced that Royal Bank of Scotland's name would be changed at parent company level to NatWest Group, and this took effect in July that year. The column concluded: 'Dame Alison, who joined NatWest as a graduate trainee, worked for the London bank at the time Royal Bank acquired it in 2000. 'With the confirmation of the move in where the bank was being run from and the name change, it looked as if things had turned very much full circle and, in terms of the London-Edinburgh dynamic, the boot was very much on the other foot.' The experts at International Living have included one town on France's Cote d'Azur on their list of the top eight best European towns for "adventurous expats". If you are considering a move to the EU to either save money or escape the city crowds, this little-known spot in France might be your best bet. International Living has published its Hidden Places Initiative report which reveals eight of Europe's best towns for adventurous expats, including one on the French Riviera. 'Everybody talks about places like Barcelona, Lisbon and Florence. But the best overseas destinations aren't always the ones you've heard of,' says Jennifer Stevens, executive editor at International Living. Enter Villefranche-sur-Mer. ‌ Villefranche-sur-Mer is a stunning town located between Nice and Monaco on France's Cote d'Azur. The town offers expats a quieter perspective on the glitzy French Riviera and International Living calls it 'a mash-up of wildly elegant, flower-flowing villas and earthy, burnt-pastel homes stacked haphazardly along the Mediterranean'. ‌ That said, Villefranche-sur-Mer still maintains the iconic Riviera glamour of its neighbours like Nice. In fact, part of the James Bond classic Never Say Never Gain was filmed nearby. The hilly landscape allows for heightened views of the bay below, while stairs take residents up to the steeper parts of the town, including its historic centre. Describing Villefranche, International Living says: 'It's as if Positano and Florence, Italy, did an 1800s collaboration with a palette of muted orange, yellow, and deep turquoise.' Two of the biggest draws of the town are its horseshoe-shaped bay and its impressive architecture - including a smattering of pastel-coloured French villas and cafes and medieval alleyways. But those picture-perfect villas and apartment buildings don't come cheap. According to International Living: 'A couple can expect to spend at least £2,233 a month, with rent starting around £2,527'. Thus, Villefranche is not for every budget, but it is ideal for expats with a love of French art and culture. As confirmed by International Living 'music is a big deal in town, as is art'. Villefranche residents enjoy open-air cinemas throughout the summer and impressive art shows at the town's Citadel. Other favourite events including classic car races, the Naval Flower Battle, jazz concerts, and open-air plays performed in the historic centre. ‌ If you want to improve your French while living in town, you can also take lessons at the Institut de Français. The school offers courses ranging from two weeks to one month and also organises excursions and homestays. Given the higher cost of living compared to other European destinations, Villefranche-sur-Mer is best-suited for digital nomads and retirees craving serenity, cultural enrichment and a touch of glam.
