A From Wednesday 2 April, most foreign visitors to the UK will need an ETA. This online permit, which costs £10 (soon to be £16), is required by those who currently do not need a visa to visit the UK.
Fortunately your daughter is one of relatively few people who are exempt. As you say, the common travel area – comprising the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands – confers extra rights on anyone who has the good fortune to be Irish, as well as foreign visitors who are resident in Ireland.
The Irish government says: 'Legal residents of Ireland, from a nationality that does not usually need a visa to visit the UK (eg European and US nationals), do not need an ETA when traveling within the common travel area, if they can show proof of legal residency.'
I understand your concern about airlines being overzealous in their interpretation of the rules – we have seen many such cases in the context of post-Brexit passport arrangements.
In my experience, though, checks for flights between Ireland and Great Britain are much more relaxed – as they should be, given the freedom of movement the common travel area confers.
Your daughter could usefully take proof of her residence in Ireland, but I would be surprised if she is asked to show it.
Incidentally, one concern of the UK government is that many holidaymakers in Ireland will stray across the border into Northern Ireland, even though they don't have an ETA. There will be no routine checks.
Q I saw you say on BBC Rip Off Britain that when you check luggage in for a flight, you have to assume that you'll never ever see it again. Why did you say that?

A I urge passengers to presume their checked-in bag will vanish. That advice aims to put them in the right mindset when packing for a trip by air. When you check in a bag for a flight, you are reliant on the airline and the ground handlers transporting it safely and securely to your destination. Your luggage is very likely to travel on the same flight as you and appear on the baggage carousel at the far end.
Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen: a leading budget airline tells me that one in 2,000 of its passengers' bags goes astray. That is on a 'point-to-point' carrier; when you book a connecting flight via a big hub airport, the chances of your possessions being misrouted multiply. According to the latest report by the aviation data specialists at Sita, seven bags go missing for every 1,000 checked in.
When luggage fails to appear on cue, there is no need to panic. Most passengers are reunited with their stray bags within a few days, with the airline delivering it to their home or holiday location. Sometimes, though, baggage can simply disappear. The bag's label and all other identification might be torn off while passing through the baggage system. (I urge people to tape a label with their contact details inside their case because at least then baggage handlers can open it and trace the owner.) Or the bag may be stolen from the carousel; at most airports there is no need to 'reconcile' each item with the passenger's luggage tag, so villains can swipe a suitcase and scarper.
Whatever the cause, every day thousands of people learn their possessions are presumed lost forever. That is annoying if all the bag contains is unwashed laundry; for priceless possessions, the experience can be heartbreaking. I almost always travel with cabin baggage only – especially on a trip involving a change of plane. If you have to check stuff in, then choose a direct flight if one is available and is not too expensive. And keep everything important in your hand luggage.
Q I am travelling with friends to Seoul, South Korea, next month. They are really keen on making a day trip to Busan. It's recommended online but most of the bloggers say you need at least two days. Unfortunately, we only have time for a day trip. Should we go for it?

A For anyone who loves cities, Seoul is an excellent choice: startling modern architecture, tranquil temples and a huge number of dining possibilities, almost all serving excellent food at implausibly low prices. All of this applies equally to South Korea's second city, Busan, which has the advantage of being a port city thereby increasing the allure by a couple of notches. But I side with the bloggers: it is more than 200 miles away, and the very fastest train takes two and a half hours each way, meaning the trip will subtract five hours of your precious sightseeing time in Korea and give you no time to enjoy the nearby beaches that are an essential part of the Busan experience.
That's not to say a day trip would be unrewarding. You can absorb the metropolitan energy and enjoy the diversity of the waterfront (Busan is much closer to Japan than to Seoul). Be hypnotised by the hyperactive harbour. Then go a short way east to Oryukdo Skywalk, sticking out from a cliff. Eating is an essential part of the Busan experience: try the excellent seafood or dwaeji gukbap (a pork soup).
Perhaps, though, I can steer you towards an easier (and much cheaper) day trip that you can do on city transport from Seoul. It is a triangular excursion that you should start with a half-hour train journey south to Suwon: a smaller city, with an impressive fortress offering walks along the walls. Look out for street art, and walk back to the station along the canal path.
Suwon station is on the extremely expansive Seoul Metro, and you can skirt around the capital on your way to the city of Incheon – a journey of around 80 minutes. The older parts of the city are scenic and include a substantial Chinatown. Once you have had your fill of serenity, back on the Metro and the ride into Seoul.
Q We were stuck in Madeira last month when the inbound plane from Belfast diverted to Gran Canaria, where it stayed overnight. We finally got home 30 hours late. Jet2 has rejected our compensation claim, citing 'extraordinary circumstances'. Should we fight on?

A Bluntly, no. Anyone tempted to fly to or from this exquisite Portuguese island should be aware that there is a small but significant chance that their flight may not keep to schedule. Every month or so, in my observation, Madeira's spectacular airport closes to arriving aircraft due to adverse Atlantic weather. The runway is partially built on stilts and is exposed to high winds from the ocean.
Holding on the ground for hours before departure to Madeira is not unknown, and neither is diverting to the Canary Islands or mainland Portugal. In your case, the aircraft waited in Belfast for the Madeira weather to improve, then flew to the island – only for the pilots to find conditions exceeded the permitted maxima for a landing. A lightning strike on the aborted approach necessitated a thorough technical check on arrival at the chosen diversion airport, Gran Canaria. Meanwhile, you were provided with a hotel in Madeira's capital, Funchal.
You contend that, had the inbound flight LS317 not been held at Belfast, 'this unfortunate malaise would not have occurred'. You may be right – but trust me, Jet2 would have done all it could to try to ensure people reached their holiday destination on the outbound flight and were brought home as close to the original schedule as possible. I appreciate it was a frustrating experience for you – who wants to spend a day out at the airport rather than enjoying the island? – but I cannot see any claim succeeding. You can argue that adverse weather in Madeira is hardly 'extraordinary', but the law lets Jet 2 of the hook. In any event, the ariline will have spent tens of thousands of pounds on customer care, and will not be inclined to hand out any more. Check your travel insurance, though: mine hands out £25 for each eight hours in delayed arrival. In your case that would be a handy £75.

But Alistair Johnston insists the mammoth trek to the far end of Kazakhstan will be a walk in the park for Celtic' s regular globetrotters. The Hoops are determined to go far in the Champions League but this wasn't quite what they had in mind. Brendan Rodgers men will face FC Kairat in Glasgow on Wednesday night for the first leg of their £40m play-off showdown. And they'll need to finish the job the following week more than 3,500 miles from home – before returning to take on Rangers at Ibrox. If the Celts went that far in the other direction they'd end up in Chicago. Johnston knows what's up ahead and he admits it's going to be BRUTAL. But there are plenty of Hoops stars who know what it takes to do the business on the pitch after going long haul. The defender – who will be 7000 miles from his Vancouver home – said: 'We've quite a few guys that do it pretty regularly. Obviously, the Japanese boys, myself, (USA aces) Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers. 'It's not fun, I'll tell you that much. It's pretty brutal, it'll be a bit of an eye opener to the European boys who are used to a little hour or two's flight away. 'When you're crossing an ocean or going through five to eight different time zones, it really adds up and makes it difficult. 'I'm curious exactly what the plan's going to be with the travel, but ideally as you try and get there a little bit earlier, acclimate and just get ready to go. But then at the same time right after that you're coming back and it's going to be a really difficult test away at Ibrox. 'So, there's things like that where you need to be able to plan and rely on the squad. 'It's a big couple weeks here for us. But all of us international boys who are used to those long distance travels obviously will try and help out with some tips for the other guys. 'The longest I've travelled? Japan was a brutal one. I don't think people understand how far that is. 'It's like an 8-hour flight from here to Dubai then another 8 hour flight from Dubai to Japan. 'With Canada, anything on the West Coast is really difficult for us. We've had some travel days that have probably added up to about 24 hours and you come back a little groggy, then you're right back into the facility the next day to get training. 'You get used to just keeping the wheels going and getting back on the horse. 'Sometimes you can have a match on a Tuesday night for example, you can't fly out until the Wednesday, you land whatever time it is Thursday. And often I've come in on the Friday morning, trained then got on a bus up to Ross County and played Saturday morning. 'It's stuff like that that I think gets lost a little bit in the shuffle. But at the same time, we get paid pretty well to deal with that stuff. 'And it's definitely a first world issue so it's not something we complain about too much.' Johnston's not going to lose any sleep over the jaunt – it's all about the journey to the Champions League. And he's convinced Celtic are in top shape going into the first leg after an unbeaten start to the domestic season and a sizzling show against Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup win on Friday. Johnston – who notched a stunning second goal in the 4-1 stroll – said: 'I think that that was exactly what we needed. Obviously, it was the first time playing under the lights at Celtic Park, It's a bit of a different atmosphere, a bit of a different feel with a night game. "I think it reminded everyone that this is what it's going to feel like. It prepared us well for what's to come. 'The pressure is going to come with it, it's a massive two-legged tie. We know everything is in the balance but we're excited for it and there's nothing more you could ask for than other guys getting a good performance, getting some more minutes into some of guys' legs. 'From guys who have played big minutes already so far this year and guys that came in, everyone's in a pretty positive note with their performances. We're in a really good place right now.' Johnston has been hooked on the Champions League since he landed at Parkhead and he reckons the Hoops new boys are in for a treat. He said: 'For the new guys that have come to the squad, there's that hunger. They're not really understanding what it is, they've heard of it but they haven't felt it. 'It's a great moment whenever you get to play at Celtic Park under the lights on a Champions League night. So that's something that is now our task over these next week and a half – to go out and make sure we get guaranteed a whole group stage of it.'

American tourist's £660 ‘extreme day trip' to Ireland raises a lot of questions
Have you ever flown for more than six hours, only to eat a snack and look over a cliff before heading home again? No, we've never done that either. However, a man called Kevin Droniak did just that. The American travel influencer went on a day trip to Ireland from New York, and filmed it all for Instagram. In a video breaking down the cost of his trip, Kevin revealed he paid close to $900 to spend a few hours on the Emerald Isle — with time for just one activity. After taking a direct flight to Shannon Airport in Ireland's west ($457 return), Kevin rented a car for $48 and drove to the Cliffs of Moher, one of the country's most iconic attractions. While he was there, he had a few minutes to scoff down a sandwich and a cappuccino. Having spent an undisclosed amount of time at the cliffs, he ran into trouble with a flat tire. He paid a mechanic to change the wheel, but incurred a $275 fee from the rental company because he hadn't paid for insurance. After that headache, Kevin said he headed straight back to the airport. The average flight time between New York and Shannon is around six and a half hours, which means he spent around 13 hours of the day in the air. We contacted Kevin to clarify his exact flying time and learn more about the trip, but didn't hear back. Including buying an Irish polo shirt (presumably from the airport), Kevin said he ended up spending $898 for his few hours in Ireland, which even he admits might not have been worth it. For most people, the idea of a holiday abroad involves packing a suitcase and being away for at least a weekend, if not a week or more. But for some, like Kevin, a single day is enough to fly to another country, explore, and be home in time for bed. It's part of a growing trend known as 'extreme day tripping'. Yet despite the popularity, 'EDTs' have drawn criticism over their environmental impact and lack of engagement with local economies. What is Extreme Day Tripping? While we don't have an Oxford definition of the phrase, Extreme Day Tripping generally involves travelling an extraordinary distance to a destination, only to spend no more than a day there before flying home. In practice, you wake up stupidly early, get to the airport, catch a red-eye flight (hopefully in time to get there at a reasonable time in the morning), and then pack as much into your trip as you can before catching a very late flight back again the same day. In theory, it allows you to get a very brief flavour of another country, without the cost of accommodation or taking chunks out of your annual leave. Do Extreme Day Trips benefit the host country? We asked Irish economist Jim Power about the benefits of having holidaymakers visit Ireland, even if only for a short time. 'Having visitors come to Ireland on any pretext is generally good for Ireland,' he told Metro. 'A visitor will spend a significant amount of money on food, transport, fuel, souvenirs, and so on, so it represents a significant financial investment into the important tourism sector.' However, Jim acknowledged that the economic benefits of extreme day trippers could be small. 'Over just one day, there is a limit to how much the accommodation and food services sector will benefit, and it is also the case that a visitor will not get any real idea about what Ireland or any other country is like. 'In addition, the environmental implications of flying into a country for just one day are not positive.' Jim concluded: 'Despite these reservations, the more one-day trippers that come to Ireland, the better for the valuable tourism sector. ' What about the environmental impact? A common criticism of extreme day trips is the impact they have on the environment. According to climate research, flying is now responsible for 2.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 8% of the UK's emissions, specifically. Campaigners have called for limits on flights taking off to address environmental concerns. Speaking to the BBC, Extreme Day Trip enthusiast and travel blogger Monica Stott acknowledged the impact the practice might be having. 'I think if it means people are taking way more flights, and airlines are putting on more flights, then I do see that as a negative impact,' she said. However, Monica went on to say: 'But a lot of people doing extreme day trips are doing it because they either can't afford to take a longer holiday or don't have time. 'I don't think it's fair to say one person's holiday is more important than another person's holiday, because they're going for longer.' What else could you do on a day trip to Ireland? Metro's Travel Editor, Alice Murphy, who was born in Dublin, had this to say about Kevin's day trip to her homeland. 'It's great to see people with large followings shouting about Ireland, but Kevin spent so little time there that he missed out on things that, in my opinion, take a visit to the Cliffs from great to exceptional. 'If he asked me to plan a trip, I'd tell him to start with coffee and a pastry at Hugo's in Lahinch, then head to the Cliffs to do the hike from Doolin to O'Brown's Tower (around 12km all in). 'Alternatively, he could do the Burren hiking trail (white is easiest). After that, I'd direct him to Clahane shore, where you can swim in the rock pools at high tide, followed by a short drive to refuel with lunch at Homestead Cottage and explore the gorgeous village of Doolin. 'If he still has room after that, cocktails and a seafood dinner at Russells is always a good choice.' Do you have a story to share?

Historic cave in Scotland where a 6th century saint once stayed
The cave in Argyll and Bute is a hidden historic site where an Irish missionary is said to have worshipped on his journey to Scotland Hidden away in the wild and rugged landscape of Argyll and Bute lies a site steeped in legend and early Christian tradition. St Columba's Cave, on the northern shore of Loch Caolisport, has long been considered an important landmark in Scotland's spiritual history. Tradition holds that the Irish missionary who helped bring Christianity to Scotland stayed and worshipped here during his journey from Ulster to the west coast. The cave is not easy to stumble upon. Travellers must take a minor road off the B8024 at Achahoish, following the lochside for several miles before reaching a signposted path. A short walk leads visitors past the overgrown ruins of a 13th-century chapel before arriving at a natural cave beneath an upturned rock face. According to local tradition, Columba stopped here in the 6th century while waiting for King Conal's permission to establish his monastery at Iona. Though there is no firm evidence he stayed in the cave, its association with the saint has endured for centuries. The cave itself is striking. Measuring around 18 metres deep and five metres across the mouth, it contains a raised rock shelf along the east wall. On the shelf stands a drystone altar, above which is carved a small cross in low relief, just 17 by 14 centimetres. To the north lies another Latin-style cross, framed by a curious series of five pits in the rock face. A third, much fainter cross is said to exist further north, though difficult to spot. Excavations outside the cave revealed two ancient burials of indeterminate date, alongside evidence of human use stretching back to the Mesolithic period. To the west, a smaller cave shows signs of being used as a dwelling. The site has inspired many local traditions over the centuries. The font at nearby Achahoish church is said to have been taken from the cave, further strengthening its connection to early Christian practice. Whether or not Columba truly stayed here may never be proven, but the setting and the view over the loch make it easy to imagine why such a story took root. The surrounding area is rich in related landmarks. Between Kiel Cave and St Columba's Chapel lies the mysterious St Columba's Footprints. These stone impressions sit atop a rocky outcrop, reached by a small flight of steps. One footprint was carved in 1856 by a local mason, but the other is much older. A similar footprint can be found at Dunadd in Kilmartin Glen. Close by is St Columba's Well, a rocky basin carved into the slope where water collects from a spring. The waters are said to have healing properties, and a rough Latin cross has been cut into the overhanging rock face above the pool. Further along stands St Columba's Chapel within Keil Cemetery. Though often linked to the saint, the chapel was almost certainly built centuries later. Its east end dates to the late 13th century, with extensions added between the 14th and 15th centuries. Overgrown with ivy, the ruined structure can still be entered through a partially buried doorway. Inside lie medieval grave slabs, two of which are thought to have been carved at Saddell Abbey.
