Russia bombards Kyiv with deadliest strike in months with 14 killed as NATO warplanes scrambled on the border
AT least 14 people have been killed in one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in months.
Waves of Russian drones and missiles blitzed Kyiv in a nine hour long attack - with dozens injured.

Vladimir Putin's assault blasted 27 locations around the capital, damaging scores of buildings and critical infrastructure facilities, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.
Branding it one of the largest attacks on the city since Russia invaded in February 2022, he said: "Today, the enemy spared neither drones nor missiles."
A total of 14 people have been confirmed dead so far, among them a 62-year-old American citizen.
Authorities say at least 44 others have been wounded in strikes on the capital that lasted almost nine hours.
Rescuers are continuing to sift through the rubble of residential apartment blocks hit by 175 drones, over 14 cruise missiles and at least two ballistic missiles by Putin's forces.
Cruel Vlad's attack lasted nearly nine hours and is the latest in a spate of mass drone and missile attacks on Kyiv.
Further blasts in the southern port city of Odesa also injured 13 people, including one child, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said: 'In Kyiv, people are currently trying to get out of the rubble of an ordinary residential building. It is not clear how many there are.
"The Russians destroyed an entire entrance.'
Poland's military operational commander announced that Nato aircraft had been scrambled amid intense Russian strikes on neighbouring Ukraine.
It comes as world leaders met at the Group of Seven meeting in Canada - which Zelensky is expected to attend.
The war leader called on Western allies to "finally react the way a civilised society reacts to terrorists".
He added: "Putin is doing this solely because he can afford to continue the war.
"He wants the war to continue.
"It is bad when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to this.
"We are contacting all partners at all possible levels so that there is an appropriate response.
"It is the terrorists who should feel the pain, not normal, peaceful people.'
Zelensky was set to meet Donald Trump in Canada on Tuesday, but the US leader unexpectedly returned to Washington on Monday night instead of Tuesday because of tensions in the Middle East.

So, this is what the world looks like when America is weak. And, make no mistake – Donald Trump is choosing weakness over asserting America's considerable strength. Overnight, Iran and Israel continued to fire rockets at one another. Meanwhile, Russia launched a huge air assault on civilian targets in Kyiv, killing 14 and injuring 44. What, exactly, is the world's greatest dealmaker and self-proclaimed peace lover doing about it? Well, he left the G7 meeting in Canada early, but made absolutely clear that it had nothing to do with the crisis in the Middle East – it was something 'far greater'. Maybe he's launching a new Bitcoin. Back in January, Trump said he would be 'a peacemaker and unifier'; that his administration would leverage US power to 'stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent, and totally unpredictable '. Five months into his second presidency and the world is, if anything, angrier, more violent and far less predictable. Let's start with Iran and Israel. It's plausible that the last five days of fighting wouldn't have broken out if Iran hadn't been pushed to the brink in negotiations over its nuclear programme with the US. Of course, Iran having a nuclear weapon would be extremely dangerous and would make the region considerably less stable. But, as others have pointed out, the need for negotiations wouldn't even exist had Trump not pulled out of the nuclear deal agreed under Barack Obama. Having effectively torn up Obama's perfectly good deal that was backed by other countries – including Russia – Trump then set an arbitrary deadline on negotiations with Iran, which expired the same day as Israel's aerial campaign on Iran started, hitting key strategic sites and taking out military leaders. It's worth noting that Trump actually discouraged Israel from launching attacks on Iran back in October after Iran launched over 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, instead encouraging negotiations. The unfolding horror in the Middle East has pushed Russia's invasion of Ukraine down the agenda – much to the delight of Vladimir Putin, one would imagine. Since Trump took office, Russia has continued its assault on Ukraine while dodging peace talks and giving Trump the runaround.T he distraction in the Middle East, Ukrainian sources fear, will give Putin cover to carry out even more brutal attacks in his attempts to steal more land ahead of future negotiations. On a recent visit to the country, a Ukrainian security official told me Trump's 'peace talks' have actually given Moscow greater incentives to intensify its attacks, because Putin knows there will be little blowback from America, providing Russia keeps turning up to these farcical negotiations. This is what I mean when I say Trump is choosing weakness. America has the power to bring people to the negotiating table, but offers no real sticks or carrots. Sure, he's moving military assets to the Middle East, but both Iran and Israel know that the MAGA movement is split on US involvement in an overseas war. And of course, he could tell Putin that if he doesn't stop his rampage on Ukraine, it's gloves off. But all evidence suggests he won't. All the while, the violence and instability get worse. America is still the West's sole great power. It is certainly the only nation that can individually force its will on the rest of the world. Whether or not that's a good thing is for another time – as is the conversation about how the rest of the West allowed America to wield such unilateral power. Right now, the only thing that matters is that America could assert its influence on two conflicts that risk escalating and possibly interacting in a way that makes the world a considerably more dangerous place. If only the man in the White House could find the courage to use his power for good.

Watch: Drones smashes into apartment block in massive Russian raid on Kyiv
Russian airstrikes killed at least 14 people, including a US citizen, and wounded dozens more in 'one of the most terrible' overnight barrages aimed at Kyiv. A kamikaze attack drone was filmed flying straight into the upper levels of a multi-storey residential building, with president Volodymyr Zelensky saying civilians were still trying to escape the rubble as of Tuesday morning. In the footage, taken in the early hours of the morning, the drone explodes in a huge fireball, hitting the building while many would have been asleep. The Russian attack struck 27 sites across the capital, including critical infrastructure sites as well as a nursery, according to the interior ministry. In total the barrage lasted almost nine-hours, making it one of the longest of the conflict to date. More than 100 people have sought medical treatment, with 68 hospitalised, said mayor Vitali Klitschko, who posted a video on Telegram while holding a cluster-munition apparently used in the strike. Mr Zelensky said 440 drones and 32 missiles were fired at Ukraine, including 'one of the most terrible strikes on Kyiv'. He added: 'People are currently trying to get out of the rubble of an ordinary residential building. It is not clear how many there are.' In the capital's Solomianskyi district, a huge chunk had been taken out of the tower-block by the Shahed strike, leaving piles of splintered wood and concrete and a gaping hole in the structure. Standing by the attack site, Mr Klitschko said 'there is no exact information yet about the buried [and] rescuers are working on the ground.' A 62-year-old US citizen died during the strike, the mayor added. The man's identity has not been released. Video from the site showed a man and woman waiting by the rubble as rescuers worked. The woman has her head in her hands, while the man rocks backwards and forwards and weeps. The Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday it had shot down 402 of 440 drones, and 26 of 32 missiles, launched overnight. Russia has drastically increased its production of Shahed-style attack drones, firing around 300 a month last summer and now more than 4,000. Russian engineers have improved the domestically-produced variant, known as the Geran, making it faster and harder to jam with electronic warfare systems. Mr Zelensky said: 'Such attacks are pure terrorism. And the whole world, the USA and Europe must finally react the way a civilised society reacts to terrorism.' US-led talks over a ceasefire have stalled in recent weeks. US President Donald Trump, who had pushed for a 30-day ceasefire, said that he might have to 'let them fight for a while' after Putin refused to co-operate. Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister, said: 'Putin does this on purpose... He sends a signal of total disrespect to the United States and other partners who have called for an end to the killing.'

Indonesia's Prabowo to hold talks with Putin this week, eyes 'strategic partnership'
MOSCOW, June 17 (Reuters) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will hold talks with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg later this week and the two countries should explore a strategic partnership, the Asian nation's foreign minister said on Tuesday. Russia is due to hold its annual economic forum in St Petersburg this week where Putin traditionally gives a key-note speech and hosts a foreign leader. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at a meeting in Moscow with Indonesia's foreign minister, Sugiono, who uses only one name, said that relations between Moscow and Jakarta were trustworthy, friendly and constructive. "We welcome our close ties," Lavrov told Sugiono. "There is chemistry between both of the leaders," Sugiono said of ties between Putin and Prabowo, and suggested they develop and deepen their ties "into a strategic partnership." Indonesia and Russia, Sugiono said, would continue to work on developing trade, economic, security, investment, energy and tourism ties. Indonesia became a full member of the BRICS grouping earlier this year. Indonesia last year dismissed a report in defence publication Janes that Russia has requested basing military aircraft in Papua, its easternmost province, after the issue caused concern in Australia. Papua is about 1,200 km (750 miles) north of the Australian city of Darwin.
