PCG: China maritime militia ships decreased in WPS amid bad weather

GMA Network09-07-2025
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday said the number of Chinese maritime militia vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) has significantly decreased due to the bad weather in the last few days.
'Dahil sa sobrang pangit na panahon sa WPS, even the Chinese maritime militia that are swarming in those areas have significantly decreased,' PCG spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said at a Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.
(Due to the very bad weather in the WPS, even the Chinese maritime militia that were swarming in those areas have significantly decreased.)
'Wala na ganung karaming swarming sa Rozul Reef and also in Hasa-Hasa Shoal,' he added.
(There is no more swarming in Rozul Reef and also in Hasa-Hasa Shoal.)
Asked about the previous and current number of Chinese maritime militia vessels in the area, Tarriel said he does not have the numbers at the moment.
On Tuesday, the Philippine Navy said the number of Chinese vessels monitored over some features in the WPS has increased in June.
Philippine Navy spokesperson for WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said a total of 49 China Coast Guard (CCG) and People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels were seen in the area.
Trinidad said nine CCG vessels and 14 PLAN vessels were seen in Bajo de Masinloc; 12 CCG vessels and two PLAN vessels in Ayungin Shoal; and nine CCG vessels and three PLAN Navy vessels in Pagasa Island.
'These 49 ships were not there all the time but they were in and out of the different features,' Trinidad said.
According to him, the June record was the highest reported number of Chinese vessels in the WPS compared to the 11 in January, nine in February, 35 in March, 31 in April, and 41 in May.
Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim.
The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago including Luzon Sea and the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc.
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis."

At least 60 dead in north China following extreme rain, authorities say

A drone view shows partially submerged village houses and other buildings after heavy rainfall flooded the area, in Miyun district of Beijing, China July 29, 2025. REUTERS/ Florence Lo BEIJING — Extreme weather killed at least 60 people in northern China over the past week, with 31 deaths in an elderly care home in Beijing's hilly Miyun district in one of the deadliest floods to have hit the Chinese capital in years. In Beijing, 44 people were killed and nine were missing as of midday Thursday, deputy mayor of Beijing, Xia Linmao, said at a press conference. Heavy rains began a week ago and peaked around Beijing and surrounding provinces on Monday, with Miyun experiencing rainfall of up to 573.5 mm (22.6 inches)—levels local media described as "extremely destructive." The average annual rainfall in Beijing is around 600 mm. In the nearby province of Hebei, 16 people died as a result of the intense rainfall, authorities said. At least eight were killed in the city of Chengde just outside Beijing, with 18 unaccounted for. The deaths occurred in villages within the Xinglong area of Chengde in Hebei province, state-run Xinhua reported late on Wednesday citing local authorities, without specifying when or how the people died. The deaths in Chengde occurred in villages which border Beijing's Miyun about 25 km (16 miles) from the Miyun reservoir, the largest in China's north. The reservoir saw record-breaking overall water levels and capacity during the rains which devastated nearby towns. At its peak on Sunday, up to 6,550 cubic meters of water—about 2.5 Olympic-sized pools' worth— flooded into the reservoir every second. In another Hebei village north of the reservoir, a landslide on Monday killed eight people, with four missing. Extreme rainfall and severe flooding, which meteorologists link to climate change, pose major challenges for Chinese policymakers, with officials partially attributing a slowdown in factory activity to such events. — Reuters

PCG saves 6 during rescue ops in Occidental Mindoro

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), on Friday, reported two successful rescue operations in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. In a statement, PCG said they were able to rescue two fishermen stranded at the Tayamaan River in Barangay Tayamaan on Wednesday night after their boat ran aground. Despite strong currents, the PCG used an unmanned rubber boat attached to a rope to save the two victims, who still chose to jump in the water and swim ashore. The victims eventually reached the shore at Barangay 9, Mamburao around 2 a.m. and were immediately assessed and brought to the Occidental Mindoro Provincial Hospital for further checking. In a separate statement, PCG shared that they were also able to rescue four passengers from a stranded fishing banca at the Tayamaan Bridge in Tayamaan at around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The PCG stated that the victims were stranded in their boat and were unable to leave due to the rising flood and strong currents due to the heavy rains. The victims were rescued through join efforts of the PCG, Provincial and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Mamburao Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). Earlier, PAGASA reported that Emong had weakened into a tropical storm as of 2 p.m. Despite this, Signal No. 2 remains up in five areas in Luzon. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

PCG monitoring six ports amid Habagat

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Tuesday that it is monitoring six ports amid the persisting bad weather condition due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and Tropical Depression Dante. 'As of the moment, mayroon tayong naitala na six ports na binabantayan po natin. Ito po yung Port of Lazi sa Siquijor; San Andres sa may southern Quezon; San Jose Port sa Occidental Mindoro; Balanacan Port sa may Mogpog; and Cavite Gateway sa may Tanza,' said PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab in state television PTV's special coverage on the effects of Habagat. (As of the moment, we have six ports that we are monitoring. These are the Port of Lazi in Siquijor; San Andres in southern Quezon; San Jose Port in Occidental Mindoro; Balanacan Port in Mogpog; and Cavite Gateway in Tanza.) From 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday, the PCG data showed that there are currently 21 stranded passengers and one vessel stranded in Cavite Gateway Terminal. Meanwhile, six vessels and 47 motorbancas are taking shelter in the said port. In the Port of Lazi, there are two vessels and four motorbancas taking shelter for the meantime. The PCG reminded the public to avoid sailing given the inclement weather. If needed, the agency advised everyone to bring life jackets with them. 'Kung hindi pa rin maganda ang panahon sa inyong mga lugar ay iwasan na po natin na maglayag. Kung maari ay i-check muna natin ang mga paalala o impormasyon galing sa PAGASA. Kung hindi maiiwasan, siguraduhin lang po talaga natin na magdala tayo ng mga floating jackets or life jackets,' said Cayabyab. (If the weather is still not good in your area, please avoid sailing. If possible, check the warnings or information from PAGASA first. If unavoidable, please make sure to bring floating jackets or life jackets.) The PCG has also deployed free bus and truck rides since Monday to assist commuters with routes from Quiapo to Angono in Rizal and Fairview in Quezon City; and from Lawton to Alabang, Muntinlupa City. It added a new route on Tuesday from Roxas Boulevard to Sucat, Parañaque. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
