Selangor to roll out circular economy within two years
He said pilot projects, including the SelKitar initiative and an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling programme, are already underway to instil circular economy practices among the public.
"We are building up the system gradually. It is not just about earning a few ringgit from recycling. The real challenge is establishing a comprehensive, functioning ecosystem,' he told reporters after launching the 'Plastic-Free Campaign 2025: Series 2' here Sunday (July 6).
Amirudin said the circular economy is likely to begin in urban areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, which are suitable testbeds due to their urban infrastructure and urban lifestyle.
A circular economy promotes waste reduction by reusing, recycling, upcycling and repurposing materials for as long as possible, thereby preserving resources, reducing emissions and adding economic value.
In August 2024, the Housing and Local Government Ministry launched the Solid Waste Circular Economy Action Plan 2025-2035 to guide stakeholders through this transition, focusing on five key pillars, namely governance and legislation, guidelines and procedures, digitalisation and technology, infrastructure and facilities, as well as market development.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor is finalising bylaw amendments across 12 local councils to expand the implementation of the 'No Plastic Bag Day' policy.
"All councils will be briefed before the amendments are tabled at the next State Legislative Assembly sitting,' he added. - Bernama

Malaysia is hosting the 58th AMM at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11. Japan became Asean's first dialogue partner in 1973, formalising the partnership in 1977. Over the decades, Japan has steadily expanded its engagement with Asean, joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2004, appointing a dedicated ambassador to Asean in 2010, and establishing its permanent mission in Jakarta the following year. In 2023, Asean and Japan elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting Tokyo's enduring support for Asean centrality and regional cooperation across political, economic and socio-cultural pillars. Among Japan's key regional initiatives is Ceapad, launched in 2013 to coordinate support for Palestine's development. Ceapad IV, co-hosted by Japan and Malaysia, is scheduled on Friday.

‘JS-SEZ will benefit all Johor districts'

He said all 10 districts in the state are undergoing developments in transportation, infrastructure, housing and tourism. 'Do not think that the benefits of the JS-SEZ will only be concentrated in the Johor Baru area. 'Under the JS-SEZ, all districts in the state will enjoy benefits because of all the ongoing developments that are happening statewide,' he said at the launch of the Majestic Johor X Renggam Fiesta at the Renggam TMIYC here yesterday. He highlighted the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, expected to begin operating on Jan 1, 2027, and the Gemas-Johor Baru electrified double-track rail system, as projects that will shorten the people's travel time significantly. Travel time using the ETS from Johor Baru to Renggam will take only 40 minutes, while Johor Baru to Kluang will take 45 minutes via the double-track rail system, he said. 'The journey from the city to Segamat, which usually takes two and a half hours to three hours, will be shortened to an hour and a half via the new rail system. All of these destinations will benefit from the JS-SEZ,' he added. While no official announcement on the date for the commencement of the ETS service has been made, it is likely that the service will only begin next year. Onn Hafiz also pointed out that the completion of the projects could help to elevate places like Layang-Layang, Renggam and Kluang into satellite towns to Johor Baru. At present, he said Seremban is a satellite town for the Klang Valley and towns like Layang-Layang, Renggam and Kluang have the potential to replicate the model. The mentri besar also said the state government has projected revenue collection of RM2.5bil by the end of this year. 'Last year, Johor collected our highest-ever revenue in history with a total collection of RM2bil. At the rate that things are going, we expect to collect RM2.5bil this year. 'Every ringgit from revenue collected will be channelled back to the rakyat,' he said, adding that this would be done via people-centric programmes and initiatives.

'We discussed the significant potential for expanding strategic cooperation between Malaysia and India in various fields, including trade, investment, digital technology, and defence,' Anwar said in a statement released after their meeting. He also welcomed Indian companies' interest in investing in future-oriented sectors in Malaysia such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and the aerospace industry. 'We are also committed to continuing to strengthen people-to-people relations through cooperation in the areas of culture, tourism, and education, which includes the proposal to set up the IIT campus in Malaysia,' he said. IITs are a group of premier engineering and technology institutes in India.
