Brecon choir festival brings community singers and choral scholars together

The Guardian20-07-2025
The men of Welsh valleys community choirs from Treorchy or Tylorstown do not often stand shoulder to shoulder to sing with choral scholars from Cambridge University – but every July, late into the night, that's now what happens at the Clarence Inn in Brecon.
Set up by a team of volunteers in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic as a way to bring people back together, the Brecon choir festival, now in its fourth year, has built on the Welsh tradition of communal singing to create a unique and ambitious celebration of song and choral music.
This year, group hikes in the surrounding Bannau Brycheiniog national park, talks and professional workshops rounded out an eclectic musical programme ranging from the medieval repertoire of the ethereal Hildegard Singers to the passion of the internationally renowned Pendyrus Male Choir and the high drama of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, performed by the BBC National Chorus of Wales.
For 2025, the festival's founders decided on a theme celebrating the poet RS Thomas, including a performance of a recently found work – Seven Poems, set to music by the Welsh composer William Mathias – and the premiere of another Thomas poem, Song, set for the BBC chorus by Lucy Walker, one of the UK's foremost emerging composers.
Georgina, a festivalgoer from Gloucestershire making a return visit after attending in 2023, said: 'It's so nice to see such a vibrant mix in the programme and the performances, there's a lot of energy. It feels very youthful and fresh.
'I'm not an expert in choral music by any means, but I know what I like when I hear it and I think [the festival] is very special.'
The festival opened on Thursday with a performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah by the Brecon Singers, the local choir set up in 1966 to augment the choristers at the town's 13th-century cathedral.
'We loved every minute … To see the audience's reaction to the big moments and hear their applause ring round the cathedral was reward indeed. The Singers were buzzing as they made their way home,' said choir member Ros Reed.
Approximately 350 people attended the festival's debut in 2022; King Charles and Queen Camilla came the next year, and a Zulu choir the year after that. This July, more than 2,200 people visited, and local schools got involved with singing workshops.
The Brecon festival's founders, Joshua Games and Punch Maughan, have ambitious plans to raise its national and international profile in the near future.
A key part of the ethos is going beyond a performer-audience dynamic to create a 'truly interactive and inclusive experience,' said Games, who also serves as artistic director.
'I think that's what makes this a much more powerful and resonant experience for festivalgoers. For example, last year we built a Men's Shed shanty chorus out of local men at risk of loneliness who had never sung before. They went on to perform in front of hundreds on our choir trail, and have since gathered real steam doing regular concert appearances,' he said.

Jess Glynne criticises White House deportation video that uses viral Jet2 song

Singer Jess Glynne has criticised the White House for using her song from the viral Jet2holidays advert in a video promoting deportation. The singer, 35, whose hit song Hold My Hand features in the advert, said the social media post made her feel 'sick'. Advertisement It comes after the White House posted a video to social media of people being handcuffed and escorted on to a plane, alongside the caption: 'When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!.' The caption makes reference to the accompanying voiceover, which says: 'Nothing beats a Jet2holiday, and right now you can save £50 per person…' Jess Glynne said her music is about 'love, unity, and spreading positivity'. Photo: Ian West/PA. The audio has become a meme in recent weeks and has been used in more than 1.9 million videos on TikTok. In a post to her Instagram story, Glynne said: 'This post honestly makes me feel sick. My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity – never about division or hate.' Advertisement Earlier this month, Glynne met voiceover star Zoe Lister on Capital Breakfast to recreate the advert live on the radio. Glynne told the station: 'It's mad because I feel like when I do my gigs, I feel like when I go to sing the hook, I feel like they're waiting for me to go 'nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.' It is tempting but I need to take this seriously, it can't be a joke.' The White House has posted memes to its social media pages before, including an image of Donald Trump's face superimposed on to Superman alongside the caption: 'The symbol of hope. Truth. Justice. The American Way. Superman Trump.' Jet2 has been approached for comment. Advertisement

UK's biggest holiday park is right on the beach with thousands of caravans, indoor pools and cheap stays

WITH over 2,000 caravans and lodges, the UK's largest holiday park even "gives Butlin's a run for its money". Trecco Bay in Porthcawl, Wales, is one of the largest holiday parks in Europe, and as a result, has a wealth of things to do. 6 6 Upon entering the Parkdean site, there a number of different accommodations to choose from, including lodges and caravans. The lodges can sleep up to eight people and some are pet friendly or have large sunbeds. You can even purchase a caravan from £22,995 if you want to keep on returning. In the centre of the park, you will find the entertainment plaza. When the sun is shining, head to Pirate Crazy Golf for some family fun or bounce on the trampolines. And with the park being so big, you could grab one of the pedal powered karts to get around. For little ones who love an adventure, there is a high ropes course with bridges and swinging ropes and a splash pad as well. Parts of the course even hover above a path where parents can spectate below. Other outdoor activities include archery, hoover boards and bumper zorbs. This holiday park has Maldives-like overwater bungalows If the rain has decided to appear though, there is also loads of things to do inside. The park also puts on shows, and there are Paw Patrol Mighty Missions for little ones. There is also the pool in case you fancy a splash about or you could use the Aqua Jets to dive to the bottom of the pool. For classic family fun, there is a bowling alley as well. And for older kids and gamers, head to the Next Level Gaming Arena where there are over 25 consoles including PS5 and Xbox, to test out. On the practical side, the holiday park also has all the facilities that you would need for a trip away, such as a launderette and supermarket. Rather oddly, the park also has its own roundabout and chapel. 6 6 The park boasts a wealth of eating and drinking options too, so no one in the family can complain there is no food they like. Options include Papa Johns, Burger King and a fish and chippy. For tipples, there are some choices to, including the themed Aloha surf bar complete with totem pole decor and tiki cocktails. And the entire park has a sprawling sandy Blue Flag beach on its doorstep. One visitor said: "We never ran out of things to do. Definitely recommend and I'm planning on going couple times a year." Another visitor said: "I would also say it definitely gives Butlin's a run for its money as we were there only a few weeks ago…" The park underwent a huge £3.5million makeover, where it added the Coast Bar and Kitchen and new caravans. And an arts and crafts den also keeps fidgety children busy. Prices for breaks vary, but can be found as low as £109. Affordable UK holiday park that mums say is like Center Parcs WHILE Center Parcs often proves too costly, Mill Rythe Holiday Park on Hayling Island offers a similar family-friendly experience at a more accessible price point. Many TikTok users have praised this Hampshire park for its value. One family's break, featuring a hot tub, marina views, two pools, soft play, and a splash pad, came in at under £500. Visitors consistently highlight the free swimming, soft play, playgrounds, and splash areas, along with the park's quality entertainment. Mill Rythe provides a range of activities, from mini-archery and crafts to bike rentals, and includes access to both indoor and outdoor pools, plus a splash park and soft play area. Entertainment options include stage shows, live acts, an outdoor cinema, and daily games. Dining choices include The Missing Squirrel and The Green Room restaurants, along with a Catch 22 fish and chip shop. The park offers 85 dog-friendly caravans and lodges. A Luxury Caravan, complete with decking and optional hot tub, can be booked for as little as £273 for a four-night stay in May, equating to £11.38 per person per night. For a more premium experience, the TriBeCa caravan boasts stylish decor and an in-bedroom bath, with seven-night stays starting from £542. There is also a lesser-known UK holiday park which has been named the best in the country. Plus, the five friendliest holiday parks in England – with one even likened to a five-star hotel. 6

Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John's decades long friendship: Rocket man showered his 'dear' pal with lavish gifts and helped him recover following horrific quad bike accident as singer helps lay Black Sabbath star to rest

and Elton John enjoyed a decades long frienship that will end as the Rocket man star joins mourners to lay Black Sabbath singer to rest in a private funeral at his Buckinghamshire home on Thursday. The heavy metal icon, who died last week aged 76, was showered with gifts by his famous pal and even credited singer Elton for helping his recovery following a horrific quad bike accident in 2003. The pair also collaborated on Ozzy's 2020 track Ordinary man, with Elton providing the piano and vocals, alongside Slash on guitar and Red Hot Chili Peppers Chad Smith drumming. Elton, 78, even appeared on the family's MTV show The Osbourne's in 2005, giving fans a rare glimpse into the pairs unique bond. While visiting their home in LA the Crocodile Rock icon removed a huge gold and diamond necklace from his neck to gift to his shocked pal. Clearly shocked by the gesture, Ozzy said: 'No! f**** off!' and said he 'felt bad' for accepting the trinket, Elton quipped: 'Don't be so stupid you silly old b******'. Meanwhile husband David Furnish, 62, joked: 'Is the real one at home in the safe?'. The rocker went to wife Sharon and said he felt 'so embarrassed' by the lavish gesture, before telling her to 'just go' on her shopping trip with Elton before the end ended up giving him his 'f*****g house'. Meanwhile Ozzy also praised his long time pal for helping him in his recovery following a quad bike accident that forced him to have metal rods inserted into his back. He told Yahoo: 'Elton told me to get off the couch and start walking, which was what I needed, as I couldn't move off it for months, he was right. Elton is a sweetheart. He has phoned me throughout all this' '[Elton and David and their sons] are such a good family. You would be surprised. When you are feeling miserable, you find out who is a friend and who doesn't give a s**t.' Following his death Elton shared a snap of himself and Ozzy alongside an emotional tribute to his 'dear friend which read: 'So sad to hear the news of @ozzyosbourne passing away'. 'He was a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods - a true legend. He was also one of the funniest people I've ever met. I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love. Elton xx'. In true Ozzy fashion, stars arrived in gothic and heavy metal attire, with Rob Zombie donning skulls on a black scarf while Marilyn Manson wore a long black jacket to see the star buried buried in the grounds of his own mansion in Buckinghamshire - as he had said desired. The star is being laid to rest in a freshly dug grave close to the lake at the heart of the sprawling 250-acre property near Gerrards Cross. A huge floral tribute in the grounds of the mansion spells out an affectionate tribute to the heavy metal legend, with the words, 'OZZY F***ING OSBOURNE', on the banks of the Osbourne lake. A version of a floral 'Ozzy' tribute that featured at yesterday's memorial procession was also placed atop a fountain. Mourners who attended today include Elton, Metallica frontman James Hetfieldas tents were seen across the Buckinghamshire estate's grounds. The events follow a funeral procession attended by thousands of fans through Birmingham city centre on Wednesday. Ozzy's widow Sharon, 72, was supported by their children Jack, Kelly and Aimee who laid floral tributes and made a peace sign as they gestured their gratitude to fans - while accompanied by Ozzy's son Louis from his first marriage to Thelma Riley. Floral tributes to the rock star first displayed at the public memorial in Birmingham yesterday were on show for the intimate farewell. Goodwill messages have continued to pour in for Osbourne, who died aged 76 last week - and had spoken in the past about his wishes for a lack of funeral fuss. Speaking in in 2011 about how he imagined his future send-off, the Black Sabbath legend said: 'I honestly don't care what they play at my funeral - they can put on a medley of Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle and 'We Are The Diddymen' if it makes 'em happy. But I do want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest.' The funeral cortege yesterday was led by a live brass band, Bostin' Brass, who performed versions of Black Sabbath songs such as Iron Man, as thousands of tearful devotees lined the streets and sang along in Ozzy's memory. Today, marquees and a music stage had been erected next to pond where the private tributes were paid at his home. Guests were seated under huge awnings due to the rain showers that had fallen earlier in the day - while catering facilities, with their own generators, were provided in the garden. A huge security operation was in place from early this morning to ensure the ceremony was strictly invitation only, in accordance with widow Sharon's wishes. A team of bodyguards and private security dog handlers patrolled the perimeter of the estate and traffic marshals directed traffic through the narrow country lane leading to the Osbourne estate. However, diehard fans did leave flowers outside the gates to their rock idol. Ozzy had spoken in 2011 about his funeral intentions, telling the Times: 'I want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest. 'I'd also like some pranks - maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin, or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of 'death'. 'There'll be no harping on the bad times. It's worth remembering that a lot of people see nothing but misery their whole lives. 'So by any measure, most of us in this country - especially rock stars like me - are very lucky. That's why I don't want my funeral to be sad - I want it to be a time to say, 'Thanks'.' And he wrote in his autobiography I Am Ozzy, published in 2010: 'Eventually death will come, like it comes to everyone. 'I've said to Sharon: 'Don't cremate me, whatever you do.' I want to be put in the ground, in a nice garden somewhere, with a tree planted over my head. 'A crabapple tree, preferably, so the kids can make wine out of me and get p***ed out of their heads.
