Crisis-hit German rail operator reports another massive loss

Years of chronic underinvestment have left the train network in Europe's biggest economy in a sorry state, with passengers frequently complaining of long delays, cancelled trains and poor service.
State-owned Deutsche Bahn booked a net loss in 2024 of €1.8 billion, although this marked an improvement from a loss of €2.7 billion the previous year, while sales were flat.
It shed some debt but is still saddled with a hefty €32 billion, which has built up over the years.
"Deutsche Bahn is facing its most serious crisis" since major railway reforms of the mid-1990s, said CEO Richard Lutz.
"We are far from achieving our goals and far from meeting our customers' expectations in key areas."
The "poor condition" of infrastructure weighed heavily, as did strikes by train drivers at the start of the year and the weakness of the German economy, which has been in recession for the past two years, the operator said.
Train delays -- a constant gripe of German rail passengers -- also become more even more frequent in 2024, with just 62.5 percent of long-distance services arriving on time.

The task ahead is colossal, with around €150 billion needed for improvements to the existing network as well as new projects, Deutsche Bahn said.
But Lutz insisted that a turnaround was underway, pointing to huge investments in infrastructure last year and an ongoing restructuring plan, which will involve thousands of job cuts.

He also hailed a plan to establish a €500 billion fund to overhaul Germany's creaking infrastructure, which was pushed by chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz and voted through parliament last week.
The fund, to be spent over 12 years, is "part of the solution" as it provided "economic security" for the rail industry, he told a press conference.

"We can send the signal to the railway and construction industry to build additional resources now, invest in additional machines, and also in additional people."
The outlook for this year was already rosier than 2024, the operator insisted, forecasting an increase in sales, a positive operating profit and a fall in debts.

Plans to reform the railways
The centre-right CDU and CSU, which came top in Germany's February elections, are currently thrashing out a coalition agreement with the centre-left SPD with the aim of forming a government by Easter.
Most recently, a working group tasked with looking at transport and infrastructure pitched a number of reform proposals to party leaders.

According to the paper, which was obtained by Handelsblatt, the parties want to push ahead with major infrastructure investments over the coming years, including the refurbishment of 41 high-performance corridors that was intiated by the previous government.

This would be financed by a special rail infrastructure fund, drawn from the €500 billion financial package.
According to the draft, the government wants to reform the railways to improve the quality of rail transport, ensure government money is going to the right places, and secure jobs in the long-term.
However, Lutz's job could well be for the chop as the parties set out plans to restaff top management at Deutsche Bahn.

Officers can be heard shouting and saying, "Clear the area," as Alexandria says, "They're telling her to move." Then a shot sounds, and the woman who was standing just feet away from the officers bends over in pain before turning around and slowly walking away. Alexandria then crossed the street to run over and help the woman, who can be heard sobbing as she arrives. She then sets her phone down to open her backpack to give the woman first aid, when police shout at them to move and honk their horns. "We're moving! We're moving, stop! She's injured," Alexandria shouts, before ushering the woman across the street. "I live here, I live here," the woman insists while crying. The woman was reportedly shot by a rubber bullet, the Tennessee Holler reported. The outlet reposted the video to Instagram , where one user claiming to be her friend commented that the woman was "okay, but absolutely stunned." From the energy powering vast data centres to the surprising amount of water used for cooling, the true cost of our AI interactions extends far beyond a simple internet connection. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has now shed more light on the environmental footprint of AI tools like ChatGPT. In a recent blog post, he revealed that an average ChatGPT query uses just 0.000085 gallons of water, which he described as 'roughly one-fifteenth of a teaspoon.' The Environmental Cost of ChatGPT This insight comes amidst growing concerns over how much energy and water artificial intelligence systems consume. Altman's recent blog post, while discussing the future of AI, also presented specific figures regarding ChatGPT's resource consumption. 'People are often curious about how much energy a ChatGPT query uses; the average query uses about 0.34 watt-hours, about what an oven would use in a little over one second, or a high-efficiency lightbulb would use in a couple of minutes,' Altman wrote. The water usage of one-fifteenth of a teaspoon per query might appear tiny for one person. Yet, given the billions of queries AI systems handle daily, the total effect becomes substantial. OpenAI did not explain how these figures were arrived at. 'As data centre production gets automated, the cost of intelligence should eventually converge to near the cost of electricity.' Altman continued. However, this perspective on electricity cost also underscores the larger environmental concerns now under close examination. Increased Focus on AI's Environmental Burden As AI becomes more widely adopted, experts and researchers are concerned about its environmental burden. Studies earlier this year forecast that AI could potentially use more electricity than Bitcoin mining by late 2025. Water consumption also presents a major worry, particularly for water-based cooling data centres. According to a 2024 report from The Washington Post, creating a 100-word email with GPT-4 might use roughly one bottle of water, influenced by the data centre's site and cooling approach. This demonstrates how environmental effects can differ depending on the infrastructure. Altman suggests that, in time, the expense of producing intelligence via AI will nearly match that of electricity. Until then, discussions concerning AI's environmental impact will become more vocal. Every Drop Counts: AI's Thirst for Water This isn't the only occasion Altman has foreseen AI becoming more affordable to run. In February, Altman stated in a blog post that AI's operating expenses would reduce tenfold yearly. 'You can see this in the token cost from GPT-4 in early 2023 to GPT-4o in mid-2024, where the price per token dropped about 150x in that time period,' Altman wrote. 'Moore's law changed the world at 2x every 18 months; this is unbelievably stronger,' he added. Big Tech's Ambitious Energy Drive Leading tech firms in the AI race are exploring nuclear energy as a power source for their data centres. In September, Microsoft finalised a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to restart a dormant nuclear plant at Three Mile Island. In October, Google revealed it had partnered with Kairos Power, a nuclear energy company, to produce three small modular nuclear reactors. These reactors, which can supply up to 500 megawatts of electricity, are expected to be operational by 2035. Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have signed deals for nuclear energy projects to power their AI and data capabilities.
