Farmers urge WRD to release water from Vaigai dam, officials to take call on Tuesday
P Manikandan, a farmer from Usilampatti, said, 'Usually water will be released for Kuruvai paddy cultivation in the first weeks of June. But, over the last couple of years, water release gets delayed which also delays the cultivation season. Since both Periyar and Vaigai dam storage are at prominent levels, water could be released earlier this year.'
Responding to the request, a senior official from WRD department stated that the Periyar dam storage has crossed 127 feet and the Vaigai dam storage has crossed 53 feet. Following the meeting at WRD office, action will be taken on these issues.
The farmers also urged the district administration to desilt and clear encroachments in canals to ensure water reaches tail-end areas. District Collector M S Sangeetha asked the officials to take action towards maintaining the canals.
Furthermore, farmer leader N Palanichamy of Kottampatti requested the district administration to conduct awareness programmes and also improve availability of preventive measures of equipment, considering the spread of Rugose Whitefly in coconut crops in Madurai.
Similarly, during the agriculture grievances meeting held in Ramanathapuram, farmers from Kadaladi block urged the district administration to take action towards providing crop insurance cover for the paddy crops damaged by pests.

VIJAYAWADA: River Krishna has been witnessing heavy inflows continuously for the 30th consecutive day, forcing the discharge of large volumes of water downstream. Since the beginning of the current monsoon season, nearly 319 TMC of water has been released into the Bay of Bengal. About 4.64 lakh cusecs of water was discharged on Wednesday, reflecting the severity of the flood conditions. The Krishna has been in heavy spate since July 20, with floodwater reaching the Prakasam Barrage, the final reservoir on the river. In response, officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD) have lifted all crest gates and, at times, a few additional gates of the Barrage to regulate the surplus flow. The first warning remains in force at the barrage. A second warning will be issued if the discharge crosses 5.60 lakh cusecs. 'By 7 p.m. on Wednesday, about 4.54 lakh cusecs of water reached the barrage, including 17,900 cusecs from the Munneru and 5,150 cusecs from the Paleru. The level is expected to rise further as heavy inflows are arriving from the upper reservoirs,' said Prakasam Barrage Anicut AE Rajesh to TNIE. According to the Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Information and Management System (APWRIMS), about 775.9 TMC of water is currently available in the 112 reservoirs across the State, amounting to about 78.01 per cent of their total capacity.

Flood mitigation work eludes south Chennai, residents live in dread
Chennai: South Chennai may experience severe flooding as key lakes remain choked with silt and lack outlet channels. No flood-mitigation or desilting work was carried out in lakes maintained by the water resources department (WRD), and most waterbodies remain clogged with silt and without proper outlet channels. This raises fear that Thazhambur and neighbouring areas could get inundated if heavy rains lash the city. When the area was inundated during the monsoon seasons in 2020 and 2021, multiple petitions were filed to construct a channel for the free flow of excess rainwater from the lakes, said Bhuvana Raj, a resident of Thazhambur and member of FOMRA. "After our persistent petitions, the govt announced a cut-and-cover drain to bridge the missing link between Madurapakkam odai and the Perumbakkam marshland. In 2023, the project stopped work due to Cyclone Michaung. Now, despite repeated follow-ups, the work is yet to be completed," Raj said. WRD did not comment despite repeated requests from TOI. "In 2024, the rainfall was relatively low in this area. So we could not assess whether the cut-and-cover drain was functioning properly. We must wait until this monsoon to see whether the drain is effective," added Bhuvana. Now, excess water from Thazhambur is drained through a small channel running through Ezhil Nagar and Jawahar Nagar, which joins a larger channel outside DLF carrying huge volumes of water before flowing into Perumbakkam marsh. Residents say a comprehensive water management plan is needed to handle lake surplus and runoff water in the area. "Instead of adding more load to Perumbakkam marsh, from where water runs up to Pallikaranai marsh and then to Okkiyam Maduvu before entering the Buckingham canal, water can be diverted directly to the Buckingham canal across OMR," said R Dwarakesh, a resident of Sholinganallur. CM conducts aerial survey of 4 flood-hit dists
1 2 Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of Vaishali , Patna, Begusarai and Munger, and directed the DMs of all affected districts as well as disaster management department to provide flood relief as per the standard operating procedure (SOP). The CM also asked the water resources department officials to remain alert with regard to any emerging emergency flood situation. Accompanied by his principal secretary Deepak Kumar, secretaries Anupam Kumar and Kumar Ravi, as well as disaster management secretary Chandrashekhar Singh, he surveyed the marooned Raghopur block in Vaishali; and Kala Diara, Rupas Mahaji, Ramangar, Kasaha Diara, Mokama, Barh and Fatuha in Patna, besides Begusarai and Munger districts. The CM asked the DMs to arrange boats for the marooned people and ensure distribution of polythene sheets, relief materials, medicine, cattle feed, dry ration and food packets.
