Oscar Pistorius's father reveals he and his son barely speak after ongoing row over killer Olympian's guilt

Daily Mail5 days ago

The father of Oscar Pistorius says he hardly speaks to his son anymore as he doesn't accept that he is a killer.
Disgraced Paralympian Pistorius, 38, served nine years behind bars for horrifically shooting his lover Reeva Steenkamp dead at his South African home.
But his father Henke Pistorius believes he was 'full of fear' during his trial and accepted his jail sentence.
The double amputee, dubbed 'Blade Runner' for the prosthetics he used to compete in, claimed he woke in the early hours thinking a burglar was breaking in unaware his girlfriend Reeva was in the loo.
He fired repeated shots through the door killing her instantly with special 'dum dum' bullets but Reeva's family have always claimed it was intentional.
The horrific shooting on Valentine's Day 2013 shocked the world and led to him being jailed for culpable homicide which was later upgraded to murder.
In an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Henke admitted that his refusal to accept his son's guilt has caused an estrangement between the two.
Pistorius was released into a media storm when he was granted parole on January 5, 2024, still insisting he killed law graduate and model Reeva, 29, by mistake.
The 38-year-old is now keeping a low profile alongside his rumoured new girlfriend at his uncle's plush multi-million pound home in Pretoria.
Speaking on Piers Morgan's YouTube chat show, Henke: 'I am already in trouble with Oscar as I'm sitting here, because I said too much.
'We don't [speak regularly] because he knows how I feel. To him, he's guilty of murder because of the process that he's gone through.
'The facts just do not support a finding of guilty of murder.
'I just think that he will feel later, to walk away after parole as a person guilty of manslaughter versus a person guilty of murder, two vastly big things, and Oscar is not guilty of murder.'
In October 2014, Pistorius was initially found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years in prison
This conviction was then overturned by South Africa's Supreme Court in 2016 who instead found him guilty of murder and extended his sentence by a further six years.
Henke continued: 'Obviously, Oscar was full of fear. Oscar will one day tell his story.
'He is, at the moment, I'm sure, very sad and very sorry about what happened.
'I can't speak for him. He will speak for himself, but what happened is not what came out of the court.'
Pistorius is understood to be living in a cottage in the grounds of his multi-millionaire uncle Arnold's secure mansion and is doing volunteer work at a Dutch Reform Church nearby.
His sentence ends in 2029 and as on parole is subject to checks from the Department of Corrections at any time of day to check his residence test for alcohol and drugs.
He is not allowed out of the immediate area without informing the local police force and is not allowed a firearm or any contact with Ms Steenkamp's mother or sister.

Nigel Canavan sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his mother

The brother of a man who murdered their ailing 58-year-old mother in her own home has told the Central Criminal Court that "someone who should have protected" her had instead taken her life in the "most cruel, violent and sadistic way possible". In his victim impact statement on Tuesday, Angela Canavan's son Keith Canavan said his brother Nigel didn't just take their mother's life but had also tried to take her dignity in the way he had killed her "using the one method she feared the most". Advertisement Keith Canavan also said his brother had "portrayed her in the courtroom not as the woman she truly was, but as someone he could scapegoat to protect himself". Keith Canavan said his mother always had a fear of anyone touching her neck and "to think that this was the way she died in the one way she had a deep fear of" was "unthinkable" and "beyond comprehension" to him. The witness said his brother had denied their mother "even the smallest grace, both in her final moments and in how he spoke about her after". In his statement, Keith Canavan also said that anyone who would have known his brother Nigel would have known how much he loved their mother, but his actions had not shown love. Advertisement He added: "The actions he took that night were that he battered and killed our mother. The actions he took in this courtroom were to scapegoat her as the antagonist; someone who attacked him, someone who was out of her mind on alcohol, someone who was mentally unwell. Nigel chose to focus on how he was feeling throughout this entire trial. How he was untouchable. How he put his hands on my mother's neck and ended her life so, in his words, she wasn't a threat to him anymore. "These are not the attributes of a person or a son who has love in his heart for our mother. These are not the actions of someone who wanted to be there for his mother. These are the actions of someone who wanted to take control of a vulnerable person who was physically disabled so he could win," he added. Presiding judge Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo noted on Tuesday that Ms Canavan was a well-loved and accomplished person and that it "must be beyond any mother's darkest imaginings that they would die at the hand of the child they gave birth to". "The defendant will have to live with what he did," he added. The testimony was heard as part of an emotional victim impact statement read to the Central Criminal Court, where Nigel Canavan (39) was sentenced to the mandatory term of life imprisonment for murdering his mother Angela Canavan. The sentence was backdated to April 30th last. Advertisement Earlier, the court heard that Nigel Canavan has two previous convictions, one for assault and the other for drink driving, with both committed on February 26th, 2023. Defence counsel, Desmond Dockery SC, said the defendant's brother Keith had made a passing reference in his victim impact statement that despite the violence inflicted by Nigel Canavan on their mother, anyone who knew Nigel would have known how much he loved his mother. On May 16th last, a jury convicted Nigel Canavan of murder, rejecting his claim that he was provoked and defending himself from an attack by his mother, whom he strangled and smothered to death in her own home. Nigel Canavan claimed that stab wounds to each of Ms Canavan's thighs, one of which tracked to 13.5cm in depth, were self-inflicted by his mother, who the trial heard had a "glittering career" as a psychotherapist before she fell into the grip of alcoholism. Advertisement Nigel Canavan also claimed that he had acted in self-defence when his mother, who had a brain injury from a fall four years before her death, attacked him by swinging her open hands at him and trying to kick him. Read More Taking the stand at his Central Criminal Court trial, Nigel Canavan further accused his mother of deliberately provoking him by calling him the "worst son in the world" and saying she wished she had never had him during a heated argument. The jury also rejected a suggestion by Nigel Canavan's defence that his mother's alleged insults so provoked him that he could be found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder. A pathologist found that besides being strangled and smothered, Ms Canavan had suffered a laceration to the top of her head, bruises to her face, body, arms and legs and three broken ribs. Some injuries indicated she tried to defend herself from an attack, and bruises to her chest suggested she had been manhandled before her death. Nigel Canavan, with an address at Erris Gardens, Crossmolina, Co Mayo, had pleaded not guilty to his mother's murder at her home in St John's Terrace, Co Sligo on May 1st, 2023.

Former girlfriend of man killed in acid attack on his doorstep is among six in court charged with his murder

The ex-girlfriend of an acid attack victim has appeared in court charged with his murder. Paris Wilson, 34, a former probation officer, is accused of murdering Danny Cahalane, 38, at the home they once shared in Plymouth, Devon. Fitness instructor Mr Cahalane, 38, had acid thrown in his face after answering the door to his home in Lipson Road, at 3.55am on Friday 21 February. He died in hospital ten weeks later, on Saturday 3 May. A total of nine defendants - including Wilson and mother-of-three Jenna Said - have already appeared in court charged with other offences relating to the attack on Mr Cahalane. But following his death prosecutors this week further charged six of the defendants with murder. Today Wilson, of The Quay, Plymouth, appeared at the city's magistrates court along with five male co-defendants charged with Mr Cahalane's murder. The six defendants appeared in three brief hearings via video link. Appearing on a screen from prison, Wilson – wearing a black sleeveless top - spoke to confirm her name and home address but added: 'Although I'm currently at HMP Eastwood Park'. Chair of the Bench Nicholas Mansfield told Wilson: 'You are going to be remanded in custody until tomorrow when you will be produced at Plymouth Crown Court. That's all for today.' In a level voice, Wilson replied: 'Thank you'. Fellow defendants Israel Augustus, 25, of Pulford Road in London, Abdul-Rasheed Adedoja, 22, of North Circular Road, Neasden, London, Ramarnee Bakas-Sithole, 22, of Junction Road, London, Brian Kalemba, 22, of Eastbury Square, Barking, London and Isanah Sungum, 21 of Sterling Way, Edmonton, London, all also appeared charged with murder. They only spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses. None of the defendants were asked to enter a plea and were remanded into custody. Magistrates said the severity of the case meant the case must be sent to Plymouth Crown Court where the defendants will appear tomorrow. A provisional trial date for May 2026 has been fixed before a High Court judge at Winchester Crown Court. Mother-of-two Wilson was previously charged with conspiracy to murder and kidnap Mr Cahalane, as well as participating in the activity of an organised crime group. Said, also known as Jenna O'Grady, 38, is also charged with conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to kidnap and participating in the activity of an organised crime group. Plymouth Magistrates' Court previously heard Mr Cahalane suffered horrific facial injuries after sulphuric acid was thrown at him. In a statement issued through police following his death, Mr Cahalane's family said: 'We are struggling to come to terms with Danny's passing. Danny was an outstanding father and son. 'Danny and his mum had so much love for each other. He is well loved by his family and friends and as a family we cherish his love and memories. 'We ask the family are please given privacy and respect during this time.' Following the incident, officers remained at the scene for a number of days, with crime scene investigators in white forensic suits seen entering and leaving Mr Cahalane's home. Locals were asked to check CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage. Wilson's LinkedIn page suggests she has previously worked in business development and holds a masters degree in public administration.

BREAKING NEWS Bodies of three missing sisters found as police swoop on campsite in search of their 'murderer' father Travis Decker

The three missing sisters who vanished after a three-hour visit with their father have been found dead in Washington after days of frantic searching by authorities. Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia Decker, five, were found dead on Monday after police swarmed around Rock Island Campground, according to the Wenatchee Police Department. Their father, Travis Decker - who they were last seen with and said to have been suffering mentally - is at large and police are looking for him. The father-of-three has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. A SWAT team was called to the campground around 5pm yesterday and the area was shutdown between 7pm and 9pm. Decker, 32, a veteran, does not have permanent housing and is known for staying at hotels and campgrounds, police said. His ex-wife, the girls' mother, is particularly worried because he has 'really struggled since he left the military.' 'His mental health can be hard sometimes,' she told KIRO 7. The Wenatchee Police Department offered their 'sincere and deep heartfelt condolences,' to the family, Fox 13 Seattle reported. Suspicions that something had happened to the girls began last night after the Washington State Patrol dropped the amber alert, but no more information was given at the time. Authorities found Decker's truck around 3:45pm near Rock Island Campground off Icicle Road. While searching the area, the girls' bodies were found, but Decker was nowhere to be seen. Shortly after, a SWAT team was deployed to look for the father, who still remains missing. Travis Decker is described as 5'8" and 190 pounds, with black hair worn in a ponytail and brown eyes.
