At least 16 displaced, couple pets died, after Baltimore County apartment fire
At least 16 people have been displaced, and a couple of pets died, after a three-alarm apartment fire on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore County, according to Travis Francis, the fire department's spokesperson. Firefighters responded around 3:40 p.m. to the 1800 block of Rambling Ridge Lane in Pikesville, where the building was engulfed in flames. "Crews arrived within minutes, with heavy fire showing throughout the building and through the roof," Francis said. Francis said that about six minutes before the fire was reported, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for the area. Investigators are checking to see if a lightning strike may have sparked the fire. "We will look into the lightning strike report from the National Weather Service to provide information on whether this was a lightning strike," Francis said. While a few dead pets were found after the fire, Francis said two dogs were rescued. Francis said firefighters called for a second alarm to get more assistance, and a third alarm was issued because of the heat and humidity. The displaced families are being assisted by the Red Cross. "It's very unfortunate," Francis said. "(Residents) are coming home to devastation, but we are going to be here to help them throughout this."

National park in Colorado to partially reopen, repairs underway after fire burns over 4,000 acres
Staff will reopen part of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado as cleanup efforts continue following a large wildfire that scorched over 4,000 acres. Fires on the north and south ends of the canyon broke out due to lightning strikes on July 10. Due to dry, windy conditions, the South Rim Fire quickly expanded, eventually burning 4,232 acres. The North Rim of the park reopened to the public on July 30, but the fire along the south rim continued to burn. In early August, officials announced the fire was under "patrol and monitor" status with very little risk of further spread. Guests will be able to enter parts of the South Rim again starting on Aug. 18. Visitors will be able to drive to the visitor center on South Rim Road as well as access Tomichi and Gunnison Point overlooks. The park store will also reopen on Monday. "Visitors can see for themselves the forces of nature and the mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation. The hours of operation on the South Rim will be 7:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. The entrance gate will lock at 6:00 pm," the National Park Service announced Thursday. Parts of the South Rim will remain closed as crews continue to repair damage from the wildfire, including: According to the park, South Rim Drive will reopen in stages as repairs progress. Officials warned that violating these closures can result in citations.

Tropical Storm Watches Issued For Northern Leeward Islands
Erin continues to move into warmer waters and is expected to become a major hurricane over the weekend. The track continues to pull the storm slightly closer to the Caribbean, so some impacts are possible, some of which could be significant. The East Coast, The Bahamas and Bermuda will need to continue to monitor Erin over the coming days.
