Violin used in Titanic movie as ship sank sells for £54,000
Band leader Wallace Hartley and his fellow musicians were all killed along with more than 1,500 others after the ocean liner hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic in 1912.
The Oscar-winning film, directed by James Cameron, saw Kate Winslet play upper class socialite Rose opposite Leonardo DiCaprio's third class passenger Jack Dawson on the doomed ship's maiden voyage.Mr Hartley, who famously played on in the face of impending doom, was played by violinist and actor Jonathan Evans-Jones.The violin can be seen several times in the film but most famously during the scene where Nearer My God To Thee is played to try and calm passengers as the ship sank.
In 2013, Mr Evans-Jones sold the violin at auction and it has been in the possession of a private collector ever since.Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "The record breaking prices and global participation from collectors are a testament to the enduring interest in the Titanic the world over."The stories of those men, women and children are told through the memorabilia and their memories are kept alive through those items."

The Oscar winner shared the news this afternoon and paid tribute to her parent, who was her "best friend". The actor, 34, who rose to fame on Broadway before starring in the acclaimed film West Side Story (2021), shared the news on Instagram earlier. She told her followers on the platform that Gina died, aged 57, on Sunday morning as a result of complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Tony Awards host Ariana included a number of photos of the late teacher in the post. She paid tribute to her in the caption, describing her mother as a "warrior queen" and telling fans that she had been a "force of epic proportion". Ariana wrote in the post today: "At 10:28 am on August 17th my gorgeous, hilarious, outspoken, warrior queen Mother - Gina Michelle DeBose - passed away due to complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. I couldn't be more proud of her and how she fought this insidious disease over the past 3 years. She was 57 years young. "She was my favorite person, my biggest fan and toughest critic. "She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn't be where I am without her. Ariana added: "My mom loved to paint, play cards, listen to good music & snuggle with her cats; but her life's purpose, aside from being my mom, was educating young people. She passed just shy of delivering 30 years of service as a public school teacher (most currently 8th grade social studies)." She added that Gina "thrived" in a classroom and her creativity "knew no bounds". Ariana said that her mother was "beloved" and "respected" by colleagues and students. Ariana said: "The greatest advocate for the underdog, a believer in arts education and the smartest person I know - with a willingness to speak her mind regardless of the consequences. But she was also a heart forward individual who believed in hard work, compassion and empathy in the same breath." Doechii pulls out of London's All Points East and Bristol's Forwards Festival
Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii has pulled out of her upcoming performances at two major UK festivals. Organisers of London 's All Points East festival and Bristol's Forwards festival have announced just days before the event that the star will no longer be performing. The 27-year-old, whose real name is Jaylah Hickmon, will also no longer perform at France's Rock En Seine festival in Paris, with no reason given for the rapper's absence at the events. An All Points East statement read: 'Unfortunately Doechii will no longer be able to perform at All Points East on Saturday, August 23. 'We'd like to apologise to any disappointed fans and hope to welcome Doechii back to All Points East in the future.' The Florida-born artist was due to perform at All Points East on Saturday, followed by Forwards on Sunday, while her Rock En Seine performance was due to take place on Thursday. The All Points East statement continued: 'We're very sorry to announce that Doechii will no longer be performing at her upcoming shows. 'She is an incredible artist, and, like all of her fans, we were hugely excited to see her on stage. 'All Points East has an amazing line-up including Raye, Tyla, Jade, Jyoty, Nao and many more, and it's set to be a truly unforgettable day.' A replacement for the star has not been announced by either of the UK festivals at the time of writing. A statement from Forwards read: 'We are very sad to announce that Doechii will not be performing at her upcoming shows. 'She is an incredible artist and we were as excited as you were to bring her to our hometown of Bristol. 'We are so proud of this year's Sunday line-up, with three amazing female headliners in Jorja Smith, The Last Dinner Party and Olivia Dean gracing our stage, as well as a plethora of other amazing musical talent across the day.' Ticketholders have not been told whether they will be able to get a refund for the events following the cancellation. The rapper first became known for her track Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, when it went viral following its release in 2020. Doechii achieved worldwide fame in 2024 with the release of mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, which includes the songs Denial Is A River, Catfish and Nissan Altima. Months later, the record gave the rapper her first Grammy Award for best rap album, with nominations for best rap performance and best new albums at the 67th award ceremony. She is also behind the viral hit Anxiety, which was released after a YouTube video of Doechii singing the song, which samples the 2011 hit Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye and Kimbra, resurfaced.
