Apostolos Stamatelopoulos wants his goal against Morton to be the start of a new chapter
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos hopes his first goal in seven months means he can put last season's injury nightmare behind him.

The Australian striker had barely set foot in Lanarkshire before tearing a thigh muscle in his first start, a 2-1 defeat against Rangers at Hampden, then scored in a 2-2 Fir Park draw against the Ibrox club in December, and then suffered a calf injury.

As he was staging a comeback from those injuries, Stamatelopoulos fractured a wrist in a freak training accident in March that ended his season.

So netting the opener in Tuesday night's 3-0 win over Morton to win Premier Sports Cup Group G and qualify for the last-16 was a major relief for the 26-year-old from Adelaide.
The striker showed predatory instinct to bundle the ball in after Morton keeper James Storer had superbly parried Johnny Koutroumbis' netbound volley, his first goal since December 29.
He said: 'Being out for seven months, it was a tough time. From game to game it has been a while, and it's the first time that has happened in my career, so it's taken a bit of adjusting to get back to that.
'It has definitely been tough. I mean, the whole of last season, I would have said, was pretty tough.
'There was a little bit of a run of games where I thought OK, I'm starting to feel like myself again, and then I got injured again.
'The broken wrist was in training, just a freak accident, really. We were playing small-sided games, one of the boys took a shot and hit me from like a metre away, and it shattered. It was just unlucky.

'I'm just putting it behind me and looking forward to playing games week in, week out, and scoring goals.
'It's good that I've got a full pre-season now under my belt and I feel confident in my body.

'I've still got a long, long way to go, but I'm getting there and I'm looking forward to the season.
'I mean, no-one's really going to remember in six months' time how the goal went in.
'Once that went in, it was just like a massive relief after so long.'

Stamatelopoulos' next forays are likely to be in a friendly against Hertha Berlin at Fir Park on Friday night, before they host Rangers in their Premiership opener on August 2.
He said: 'Getting my first one, and thankfully it happened before the season started, means I'm definitely looking forward to the next two games.
'They'll be tough, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

'I feel like my movement was decent, I could be a little bit sharper, but that's what I live for in the box.
'There were a few times where I gambled the wrong way, and I had made a different run, I would have had another couple of tap-ins.
'It's just finding that partnership with team-mates, knowing what they want to do in certain situations, and then more goals will come, for sure.
'Hopefully by the time the season comes I'm ready to go. I mean, that was my first time I played 90, so I started cramping towards the end, but the body's getting there.
'Every single time I had an injury, I was just taking each day as it comes. Like I'll do this season, every day as it comes, each match as it comes, and go from there.'

Daniel Ricciardo confirms F1 plans after being spotted unexpectedly in airport

Daniel Ricciardo has been largely off the grid since his Formula 1 career came to an end in 2024, but the Australian was recently interviewed by a fan at an airport Daniel Ricciardo appears to have confirmed his retirement from Formula 1 during an impromptu airport interview with a fan. The former star of the sport and darling of Netflix show Drive to Survive has kept a low profile since leaving the racing world last year. ‌ Ricciardo's move from Renault to McLaren in 2021, replacing Carlos Sainz who had decided to leave for Ferrari, was seen by many as a strategic step towards a rising team. However, in retrospect, this gamble marked the beginning of the end for the eight-time Grand Prix winner. ‌ He was consistently outperformed by his team-mate Lando Norris in the subsequent years. After two disappointing years at Woking, McLaren decided to make a change and dropped Ricciardo a year before the end of his contract, opting instead for rookie Oscar Piastri who is now vying for the drivers' championship title. ‌ The 36-year-old made a brief comeback with the junior Red Bull team, now competing as Racing Bulls, but failed to find the form he needed to challenge for a seat at the main outfit. He left in the second half of the 2024 season, replaced by Liam Lawson. Since then, he has been enjoying life away from the media glare, although he was recently spotted and interviewed by a fan at an airport. Reflecting on his career, Ricciardo shared that it took him a while to realise he was living his dream. "It took me a long time to realise I was actually doing it because, yeah, it's a dream and you think about it as a kid. And when you're there and you make it, you're like, 'Wow'. It happens very quick, but I mean obviously, I'm very appreciative for the career that I had and very grateful to do what I loved for some time." When asked if he could find something to replace the adrenaline rush of racing, Ricciardo admitted: "No... so that's what I'll... second half of my life I'll try and find that another way, I guess." These comments seem to squash any remaining speculation that Ricciardo might return to F1 in the future. Rumours linking him with the new Cadillac F1 team have persisted, but it is understood there have been no talks between the American outfit and Ricciardo's team. Last month, team principal Graeme Lowdon explained why Ricciardo is not the type of recruit they are looking for when it comes to drivers. "Actually, I think he has publicly said that he is not interested in Formula 1," he said. "If I need to convince someone, then it is the wrong person. You never need to convince a Formula 1 driver to jump in the car. I have got no problem – everyone can make their own mind up."

Caley Thistle v Peterhead preview: Manager thoughts, team news, predicted line-ups and key battles

Caley Thistle can move on to positive points if they win Saturday's League One north derby against Peterhead. Saddled with a starting -5 point deduction as a result of going into administration last year, they got off the mark last week with an impressive 3-0 victory at Kelty Hearts, thanks to goals from Billy Mckay, Luis Longstaff and David Wotherspoon. A victory could even take them off bottom spot, but they welcome a team who are top of the table after the first 90 minutes of the campaign. League Two champions Peterhead hit the summit after a resounding 4-1 win against East Fife at Balmoor Stadium in their opening game. The Blue Toon shared the goals in their opening day win with Peterhead captain Jason Brown scoring twice, while David Wilson and Kieran Shanks were also on the scoresheet. 'You look at Stenhousemuir last year – they came up from League Two, and what a season they had (finishing fourth). 'When teams have got that momentum, it's a good thing for them, so we know we're going to be in for a hard game. 'Momentum is a big thing, and it's important that you try to get up to steam as quickly as you can. 'We watched Peterhead's game against East Fife, and they took their chances really well. They've got some good players with Peter Pawlett, Cammy Smith, and Jason Brown. 'We know we're going to be in for a hard game. I don't think there is an easy game in this league, so we'll need to approach Saturday the same way we did last week where our attitudes and work rate was right. 'If we work hard, we've got players that can hurt teams, so that's what we need to try and do this Saturday.' 'It'll be an extremely difficult game. 'I think Caley Thistle will definitely be there or thereabouts come May for the title. 'They are a really good team when we look at their squad – they've a good blend of experience youth, technical attributes and speed. 'They've got players that can chip in with goals and assists, so we have to be on our guard for them on Saturday. 'We know they'll be a threat and a difficult opponent because they're full-time. 'They'll use the pitch well, so it'll be a massive task for us, but it's one that we'll try and set-up to take points away from. 'It's up to use to execute the game plan.' The Caley Jags have a 'few knocks and niggles'. With right-back Ross Millen a doubt with a calf injury, midfielder Callum MacLeod is likely to continue to fill that void. Midfielder Paul Allan has a chance of recovering from a groin injury to feature for the first time since the 6-2 Premier Sports Cup cruise at East Kilbride. Midweek North of Scotland Cup doubles for on-loan Aberdeen striker Alfie Bavidge and ex-Forres Mechanics and Rothes attacker Jordan Alonge in the 6-0 win at Lossiemouth could push them into contention. For Peterhead, defence continues to be their major concern after starting the new campaign with only three fit defenders. Midfielder Dylan Forrest partnered captain Brown in a makeshift central defensive partnership last weekend while full-backs Wilson and Danny Strachan were the only other fit and available defenders. However, the visitors hope to have more options for the trip to the Highlands. Peterhead captain Jason Brown returns to his former club and he could have a tough afternoon against in-form Billy Mckay. Livingston loaneee Liam Sole has provided fresh pace down the left wing for Inverness since his summer arrival. If Danny Strachan can stand up to that challenge, it will boost the Blue Toon's chances. Caley Thistle (4-3-3): Munro, MacIntyre, Devine, Savage, MacLeod, Stewart, Chalmers, Wotherspoon, Sole, Mckay, Longstaff. Peterhead (4-2-3-1): Newman, D. Strachan, Brown, Wilson, Goldie, McGuffie, McCarthy, Barry, Pawlett, Smith, Shanks. McBookie make Caley Thistle the 8/15 favourites for this encounter. Peterhead are 9/2 if you fancy an upset, while the draw is priced at 14/5.
