Young medico's campaign brings smart school to Rajasthan's Chambal ravines

The Hindu2 days ago
A unique campaign led by a young medico to improve the living conditions in a small village situated in Rajasthan's Chambal ravines, which was devoid of basic infrastructure to sustain life, has brought a smart school to the region. The Indian-Norwegian Community, a voluntary group from Oslo, Norway, has rendered help for the campaign.
The Rajghat village in Dholpur district is deprived of the benefits of schemes designed for panchayats because of its location in the municipal limits. The 'Save Rajghat Campaign' of Ashwani Parashar, 28, first brought electricity to the village with a population of just 350 and later drew the attention of international donors who have pitched in to support the efforts to build the infrastructure.
Village of Boatmen
The village is inhabited mostly by boatmen, who work as daily wage labourers. Interestingly, the shooting for Hindi films Bandit Queen and Paan Singh Tomar, based on the Chambal dacoits, was done near Rajghat.
An old and single-room government primary school in a dilapidated condition – the only educational institution in Rajghat – has given way to a smart school with two classrooms, an office room and a small verandah, constructed in the shape of train coaches. The installation of a smart board in the school has stopped the student dropouts.
Dr. Parashar told The Hindu that the Indian-Norwegian Community carried out crowdfunding to support the 'Save Rajghat Campaign' through a project called Saksham. The school, which was on the verge of closure because of decline in admissions, is now functioning with a newly installed smart board. It has over 30 students enrolled, and new admissions are coming in the academic session which started on July 1.
Dr. Parashar said his campaign would now focus on 'dignified life' for villagers, with a motorable road, clean drinking water and a fully functional hospital.

Amit Shah pitches for natural farming, highlights its benefits

The senior BJP leader also said after retirement, he will dedicate rest of his life to ancient Indian scriptures Vedas, Upanishads, and also natural farming. Shah noted that if a person consumes food that is devoid of chemicals and fertilizers, he won't require any medications. Ahmedabad, Jul 9 (PTI) Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has said natural farming is a scientific experiment with numerous benefits, including higher crop yield, and cautioned that growing wheat with chemical fertilisers often leads to multiple health issues. 'I have already made the decision that whenever I will retire, I will dedicate the remainder of my life to the Vedas, Upanishads and natural farming. Natural farming is a scientific experiment with numerous benefits,' said Shah. The Union minister made the remarks during 'Sahkar Samvad', an interaction with women cooperative workers of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in Ahmedabad on the occasion of International Cooperative Year. The video and press release of the interaction, which took place in Science city of Ahmedabad during Shah's Gujarat visit on last Saturday and Sunday, were released on Wednesday. According to him, wheat grown using fertilizers could cause thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer. 'If you consume food that is devoid of chemicals and fertilizers, you won't require any medications. Crop yield would also increase, which is another benefit of natural farming. My output has improved by 1.5 times after I implemented this farming technique on my own farm,' said Shah. It may be noted that natural farming (NF) is a chemical free farming, involving livestock, integrated natural agriculture methods and diversified crop systems rooted in Indian traditional knowledge. Addressing 'Sahkar Samvad, Shah said the foundation stone of a cooperative university has been laid in Anand district of Gujarat and it will be named after Tribhuvandas Patel, regarded as the father of India's cooperative movement, said a PIB release. He urged milk producing cooperative societies to put Tribhuvandas Patel's picture in their institutions so that people get acquainted with the personality who made women associated with the cooperative sector prosperous in Gujarat. The original idea of preparing young professionals in the cooperative sector was of Tribhuvandas Patel and this university is being established for that purpose, Shah noted. Shah said despite objections from opposition parties, the Centre was firm and named the university after Tribhuvandas Patel in view of his contribution to the key sector. The Minister of Cooperation said the government is bringing a lot of changes in the dairy sector. In the coming time, cooperative dairies will focus on the management of cow dung, health of animals and measures to increase income through cow dung, said the release. Shah said being the Home Minister of the country is a big deal because Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel held the same position after independence, but heading the cooperation department was bigger honour for him. 'But the day I was made the Cooperation Minister, I believe that I got a bigger department than the Home Ministry. This is a ministry that works for the poor, farmers, villages and animals of the country,' said Shah during his interaction. He informed that in the coming days, he will organize 10 such 'chaupals' (gatherings) in three states each and work will be done in the Cooperation Ministry on the basis of suggestions received at these events. During 'Sahkar Samvad', Shah said research is going on to find out medicinal properties of camel milk. 'The Rajasthan and Gujarat governments will soon jointly launch a scheme with an aim to get higher prices for camel milk by highlighting its medicinal properties. When the rate of camel milk increases, it will eventually help in conservation of camel breeds,' Shah emphasised. PTI PJT PD RSY This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. 'I say N-word all the time, I am 20% Black': Indian-origin man's racial slur viral, he says he's proud

Screenshot from the viral video where Indian-origin man, Stanley Thomas, said he's proud to say to N-word because he's 20% Black. A video of an Indian-origin man, identified as Stanley Thomas, created major outrage on social media as the man was seen abusing a Black woman using the N-word repeatedly. The video was captured at Moxie's, a restaurant in Dallas' Uptown neighborhood, where Stanley abused the woman. The woman then decided to film the act and Stanley did not hesitate. 'I say the N-word all the time,' he said emphasizing the hard 'r' ending. The woman told him that the video would go viral. To that, he said he's proud and he can also disclose his name on the camera. And then he said his name is Stanley Thomas. Thomas said he can use the word as he is 20 per cent Black because of his Siddi ethnicity -- a minority ethnic group in India of African descent. The woman asked Stanley if she could AirDrop the video so he could "post it" with his "fellow Indian friends and tell them how you said the N-word all the time, and you're 20% Black". As the video went viral, Stanley's Facebook profile surfaced and it was found that he worked as a senior business analyst at Christus Health, a Texas-based Catholic healthcare nonprofit. Christus replied to the viral video and distanced itself from Stanley. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Many social media users commented that the man chose to act bold unnecessarily just because a woman was taking the video. "Does his 20% blackness not give him the N-word pass?" one wrote. "And he probably writes 'white' on all his docs," another wrote.
