Asian sprint triathlon and National Games beckon for Hong Kong's Cade Wright
Hong Kong triathlete Cade Wright will this weekend have the incentive of reaching a continental showpiece in her hometown as she builds on what her coach considers 'world-class' potential.
The Asia Triathlon Cup in Malaysia offers Wright an opportunity to earn a berth at the Asian Sprint Championships, which Hong Kong will host in April.
It could also continue a rise that has taken her to the brink of the world's top 200. That is not bad going for someone who as a child was 'not interested in swimming at all'.
The 21-year-old is one of four elite women joining the seven-strong men's team in Malaysia on Saturday, knowing a top-10 finish overall and placing inside the top three with Hong Kong's women's team will clinch her a spot at the sprint championships.
Born to an English father and a Hong Kong mother, Wright started as a runner, breaking multiple junior records and winning 1500 metres gold at the 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championships.
'I grew up [running at] 26 Coaching,' Wright said, referring to the youth programme founded by Andrew Wright – no relation – who is now Hong Kong triathlon head coach.

'Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles'
'Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles' King Charles chats with David Beckham at the Chelsea Flower Show. Photo: AFP David Beckham will be awarded a knighthood by King Charles next week in recognition of his football career and his charity work, reports said on Friday. The former England football captain is set to be named in the King's Birthday Honours List, according to sources. Other sporting figures who have been awarded the title include Beckham's former manager at Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, and British tennis great Andy Murray. The Sun newspaper said he would take the title of "Sir" and his wife, Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham. Beckham played 115 times for England as well as for a list of high-profile clubs, including United and Real Madrid. He is currently the president and co-owner of the US team Inter Miami and co-owner of Salford City, who play in the fourth tier of English football. The 50-year-old, who has long been in the running for a knighthood, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 – a lower award in Britain's honours system. Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry. David Beckham was last month named in Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential leaders in philanthropy. He is an official ambassador for The King's Foundation, supporting its education programmes and "efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature" and has been a Unicef goodwill ambassador since 2005. Chelsea win race to sign Ipswich striker Delap
Chelsea win race to sign Ipswich striker Delap Delap scored twelve Premier League goals during his spell with Ipswich. Photo: AFP Chelsea beat off competition from Premier League rivals to sign English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich for a reported fee of US$41 million. Delap, 22, scored 12 Premier League goals during his sole season at Portman Road but could not prevent Ipswich making an immediate return to the Championship. Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly willing to meet the buyout clause in the England under-21 international's contract. But Chelsea have won the race for the former Manchester City forward, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, starting later this month. "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," said Delap, who has signed a six-year contract, in a Chelsea statement. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and will return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence. And Enzo Maresca's men last week beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final to secure a trophy in the Italian manager's first season in charge. In mid-December Chelsea were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool before hitting a rocky patch. They finished the season strongly, securing a top-five spot on the final day of the season but were hamstrung by their lack of a clinical number nine. Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored just 10 times in 30 Premier League appearances, while Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave the club after an underwhelming two-year spell. Delap, the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but struggled to break into Pep Guardiola's star-studded first team. After loan spells in the second tier with Stoke, Preston and Hull, he was snapped up by Ipswich after they won promotion to the Premier League a year ago. Delap was one of the few success stories for the Tractor Boys during a difficult season as they were relegated back to the Championship with just 22 points. Chelsea will face Flamengo, LAFC and ES Tunis in the group stages of the Club World Cup, which gets underway on June 14. (AFP)

Watson strike lifts Sunderland into Premier League
Watson strike lifts Sunderland into Premier League Tommy Watson's farewell gift to Sunderland is the richest prize in English football. Photo: Reuters Sunderland clinched promotion to the Premier League after eight years away as Tommy Watson's stoppage-time strike sealed a 2-1 win against Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final on Saturday. Regis Le Bris' side trailed to Tyrese Campbell's first-half goal at Wembley, but Eliezer Mayenda equalised in the closing stages before Watson delivered the priceless last-gasp winner. It was an astonishing twist to the single richest match in world football as Sunderland recovered from a sluggish start to hit the jackpot with a promotion worth an estimated £200 million (US$270 million) in increased revenue. Watson's moment ensured Sunderland fans can look forward to renewing hostilities with bitter rivals Newcastle next season. Sunderland's return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 comes after a dark period that included a four-season spell in the third tier. The Black Cats suffered five successive defeats coming into the play-offs, but they dug deep to reach the top-flight in the most remarkable style. With a penalty shoot-out just seconds away, Dan Ballard's last-gasp extra-time header sealed a 3-2 aggregate success in the semi-final second leg against Coventry. They looked down and out with only 14 minutes left at Wembley before the stunning denouement. Promotion completed an impressive rise for Le Bris, a 49-year-old Frenchman who arrived at the Stadium of Light last year after suffering relegation from Ligue 1 with Lorient United are still without a win at Wembley in 100 years and have now endured four Championship final defeats among 10 failed attempts to win promotion via the play-offs. United had finished in third place in the table, 14 points clear of fourth-placed Sunderland in the regular season, but that gap proved irrelevant. Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson made a brilliant save in the second minute, diving to his left to claw Kieffer Moore's header off the line. Patterson's stop conjured memories of Jim Montgomery's incredible save to help Sunderland shock Leeds in the 1973 FA Cup final. Injured trying to stop Moore's header, Sunderland captain Luke O'Nien was forced off with a dislocated shoulder that left him writhing in pain. United deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute. Ben Hamer showed why he was voted Championship Player of the Year with a perfectly weighted pass to Campbell, who guided a composed finish over Patterson from 12 yards. It was a poignant moment for the 25-year-old approaching the first anniversary of the death of his father – former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell. Harrison Burrows thought he had doubled United's lead nine minutes later, but his strike was disallowed for offside against Vini Souza after a VAR check. United substitute Andre Brooks barged through on goal after the interval, but Patterson stuck out his foot to make a superb save. It proved a costly miss, as Mayenda hauled Sunderland level with only their second shot on target in the 76th minute. Patrick Roberts' pinpoint pass reached Mayenda just inside the area, and he punished United's sloppy marking with a fierce finish into the roof of the net. O'Nien, his shoulder in a sling, sprinted off the bench to embrace Mayenda, waving his one healthy arm in jubilation. That celebration was only the precursor to the ecstatic scenes sparked by Watson five minutes into stoppage-time. Seizing on Moore's loose pass, Watson drove towards the edge of the United area and curled a low shot into the bottom corner past Michael Cooper's fatally slow dive. Watson is due to join Brighton in the close-season, and his thrilling winner was the perfect farewell gift, ensuring Sunderland will join the 19-year-old among English football's elite. (AFP)
