NBC confirms ‘Roundball Rock' will be part of its return to NBA game broadcasts in the fall

Boston Globe04-05-2025
'Roundball Rock is one of the greatest pieces of theme music in sports history. Hearing it immediately conjures images of NBC Sports' coverage of one of the golden ages of the NBA, from Magic to Michael to Kobe and many others,' NBC Sports president Rick Cordella said. 'It was a pleasure working with John Tesh to bring Roundball Rock back to NBC, and we're equally excited to hear its debut on Peacock. We couldn't imagine beginning our coverage any other way.'

The spot features current NBA stars Luka Doncic, Donovan Mitchell, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, along with stars from NBC shows humming the theme. It concludes with Tesh playing 'Roundball Rock' on a keyboard in the center of Los Angeles' Intuit Dome — the home of the Los Angeles Clippers — before cutting to the front row where Tracy Morgan says, 'John Tesh still got it.'

Tesh has often said he composed 'Roundball Rock' in July 1989 after he woke up in the middle of the night with the idea. Without instruments or a tape recorder, Tesh left an a cappella message on his answering machine so he wouldn't forget it.
'I'm truly honored to be back with my friends at NBC Sports,' Tesh said in a statement. 'From our first meeting, Rick Cordella had a powerful vision for bringing Roundball Rock back to its one true home. Along with millions of other fans, I'll be front row center for the epic launch in the fall.'

During the media rights negotiations last year, Tesh created a bit of a social media frenzy when he announced he was going into the recording studio to do an updated version of 'Roundball Rock.' However, it was for NBC's coverage of the Paris Olympics.
'Roundball Rock' has lived on in popularity even after NBC lost the NBA. Fox Sports reached an agreement to use it for its college basketball coverage, while a 2013 skit featuring actor Jason Sudeikis portraying Tesh remains one of 'Saturday Night Live's' most popular scenes.
NBC's 11-year agreement with the NBA and WNBA begins in October. Peacock will exclusively stream games on Monday night while NBC/Peacock will have regional doubleheaders on Tuesday. NBC and Peacock will also launch 'Sunday Night Basketball' in January.
NBC also announced on Saturday that Carmelo Anthony will be part of its studio coverage.

Anthony Davis and LeBron James uploads same cryptic post on social media

Anthony Davis and LeBron James uploads same cryptic post on social media originally appeared on The Sporting News The internet has been buzzing on Tuesday when Anthony Davis and LeBron James reposted the same cryptic quote on their Instagram stories. During their time together playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Davis and James have become close friends. They often hung out off the court and would even spend time with each one's families when given the opportunity. However, there have been rumors that their bond has been broken ever since Davis was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. At the last second before the trade deadline of the 2024-25 NBA season, the Mavericks and Lakers pulled off one of the biggest trades in league history. It was the first time two All-Star players were traded for each other in the middle of the regular season. Davis was sent to Dallas, while Los Angeles received Luka Doncic in return. Many claimed that everyone involved was blindsided by the jaw-dropping trade, including James. When Davis asked his longtime Lakers teammate if he was aware of Rob Pelinka's decision, James claimed he was left in the shadows. Despite their interaction, there were reports that Davis wasn't convinced of his former teammate's claims. As the season carried on, there were moments when Davis and James acted snobbish towards each other whenever the Mavericks would face off against the Lakers. Their friendship appeared strained and didn't seem as close as they once were. Fast forward to the present day, and it seems their friendship might be over. An X post went viral on social media on Tuesday. The post featured a couple of screenshots from Davis and James' Instagram stories. Both stars reposted the same quote, which reads: "Becoming the best version of yourself comes with a lot of goodbyes" Social media went into a frenzy and immediately thought of the worst possible outcome. Both stars made it seem like they've moved on from each other. However, readers should take this with a grain of salt. As of this writing, neither of the two stars has confirmed whether or not they've cut ties with each one.

Boston Celtics sign coach Joe Mazzulla to contract extension

Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics signed coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. Mazzulla went 182-64 over his first three seasons. "We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a news release. "He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. "He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach -- including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics." Mazzulla, 37, led the Celtics to a 61-21 record and No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference last season. They lost to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, ending their shot at a title defense. "This is truly a blessing," Mazzulla said. "I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad Stevens' mentorship, and the support of our staff. "Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston." The Celtics will face the Memphis Grizzlies in their preseason opener Oct. 8 in Memphis.

Oakland boxing coach seeing renewed interest as "Straight Outta Oakland" event nears

Inside the storied walls of Kings Boxing Gym, the steady rhythm of gloves hitting pads sounds like a heartbeat. Coach Danilo Jacob Garcia moves between fighters, calling out instructions. Every punch, he said, is a step toward a new direction. Garcia has been watching the Bay Area's boxing scene swell with new energy. "The scene is ripe for boxing right now," Garcia said. "I think in a few years' time, you're going to hear about all the talent that's being developed right now, that's on the come up, and it's just going to be on the world stage." He's been there himself. A former U.S. Army service member, Garcia represented Team USA as a boxing coach during the 2024 Paris Olympics. "I'm a patriot. I served my country in the Army, and then to be able to do it in a boxing sense and representing Team USA internationally. It was such an honor," he said. Now, that honor lives on through the fighters who pass through the gym. One of them, Braulio Ceja Navarro, will step into the ring Aug.16 at Straight Outta Oakland, a boxing night at the Oakland Marriott organized by G1 Promotions and Lions Den Promotions. Among those on the card is boxer Lorenzo Powell, who promises to make his presence known. "Every fight I make the crowd fall in love with me," Powell said. "Whether I got to get flashy, I got to turn into a dog, go forward, go backwards — I just want everybody in the room to fall in love with me. And come Aug. 16, they will do that." But the night isn't just about belts and knockouts. Organizers hope the event will connect with young people through the "Guns Down, Gloves Up" movement, offering boxing as an alternative to the streets. "For us, it's boxing, keeping them busy, keeping them away from video games and TV and just something that's more lucrative to their life," said Wali Hewari of Lions Den Promotions. "Boxing teaches respect, discipline, all of that. Not every kid is going to become a world champion in boxing, but they will become a world champion in life. They'll know how to earn respect, give respect, stay out of the streets and become somebody, somewhere," Marty Chima said, of G1 Promotions. As Powell prepares for his moment under the lights, fellow fighter Amari Jones is celebrating a milestone of his own: a signing with Golden Boy Promotions. Garcia, who connected with Jones at Kings Boxing gym, said he knows firsthand how the sport can change a life. "I've struggled with things like addiction. I'm 13 years sober, and that's something I don't share too often," Garcia said. "But it's just another example of how boxing has saved my life." For fans, Aug. 16 promises to be a night of electrifying bouts and authentic Oakland entertainment. For the fighters, and for Garcia, it's another chapter in a story about grit, redemption, and the belief that the ring can be a way out, and a way forward.
