Don Cowie highlights key area Ross County must improve in Premiership play-off return leg against Livingston

Don Cowie insists providing more ammunition for talisman Ronan Hale holds the key to Ross County navigating their Premiership play-off tie against Livingston.
The Staggies' top-flight status is on the line in Dingwall tonight, with the tie locked at 1-1 following Thursday's first leg at Almondvale.
Northern Irishman Hale's stoppage time penalty – his 17th goal of the season – levelled the tie after Danny Wilson's first-half goal looked like giving Livi the advantage.
While Cowie was pleased he continued his fine scoring streak, which has seen him score five goals from his last seven games, the Staggies boss believes his side need to engage Hale in the game more at Victoria Park.
Cowie said: 'I think we need to service Ronan Hale a lot more. You can see how confident he is, he's playing with a real freedom and he's in great form.
'In the first half hour I thought we managed to do that, and then we had a lull.
'I thought Jordan White came on and made a good impact on the game.
'We are going to have to perform collectively at a high level to come out on top against a good Livingston.'
County are aiming to triumph in their third successive Premiership play-off final, having come through ties against Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers in the last two seasons.
With Livi aiming to bounce back to the Premiership at the first time of asking following relegation last year, Cowie is wary of the threat posed by David Martindale's men.
He added: 'Some of our players have experience, and know what it takes.
'As I said before the game, we have to earn it. In the last two years we have played Raith Rovers and Partick Thistle – who were both on great form.
'It's no different from Livingston. Maybe the difference in Livingston is they have that Premiership feel.
'It's not long since they have been out of the league, and they've got experienced Premiership players.
'That's the challenge we face.'
While Hale is aiming to produce the Staggies' goalscoring threat, at the other end goalkeeper Jordan Amissah is looking to keep the back door shut.
Amissah has been an impressive performer for the Staggies since joining on a free transfer in December, after leaving Sheffield United.
Having established himself as first choice he has gone on to make 22 appearances, and signed a new two-year deal earlier this year.
Amissah is eager to play his part in ensuring the Staggies' future lies in the top flight.
Amissah said: 'We are very confident.
'We have shown it in the past that at home, we're a good team, and it's about doing that again.
'We have been a Premiership club for a reason and it's about turning up to get the job done.
'We have to be consistent for 90 minutes.
'Over the last few games we've played very good first halves so it's about doing that over the whole game.
'The boys left it all out there on Thursday. It's about getting that quality up the pitch to get goals.
'The defence and myself will do everything we can do to keep the team in the tie.'

Celtic left with plenty to do after goalless stalemate with Kairat Almaty

However, with Yang Hyun-jun on for Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda moving to centre forward at the start of the second half, Celtic stepped up the pace and piled on the pressure in the later stages but could not find a way through despite 10 added minutes. After Saturday's home William Hill Premiership game against Livingston, Celtic will get ready for the return leg in Kazakhstan next Tuesday night which involves a 7,000-mile round trip knowing qualification requires perhaps more work than many anticipated. Much of the build-up to the game was centred on if and when Rodgers would add to his squad for the European campaign. There were no late signings, but Rodgers made six changes to his side, with Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Reo Hatate, Benjamin Nygren and Idah returning and Viljami Sinisalo, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Johnny Kenny dropping out. Rafael Urazbakhtin stressed his side were playing for the glory of Kazakhstan and the Kairat head coach was pinning a lot of hopes on 17-year-old Chelsea-bound Dastan Satpayev. Celtic's Alistair Johnston is placed on to a stretcher by medical staff (Andrew Milligan/PA) The visitors settled early and in the 11th minute captain Aleksandr Martynovich had the ball in the Hoops net from close range but was offside. With Satpayev influential, Kairat attacked fluidly and at pace on the counter, dampening the mood of the expectant home support. In the 32nd minute, Celtic defender Alastair Johnston pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury as he backtracked and was taken from the field on a stretcher, replaced by Anthony Ralston. Moments later, Kairat goalkeeper Alexandr Zarutskiy saved from Maeda when Celtic at last got through, but at the other end Ofri Arad's powerful drive flew just wide of Schmeichel's post. Temirlan Anarbekov wore a protective cap after sustaining a knock (Andrew Milligan/PA) Yang for Idah for the start of the second period and Maeda moving central was no surprise and within a minute Yang set up James Forrest, whose shot was touched onto a post and then gathered by Zarutskiy. In the 58th minute, after some sloppiness by Carter-Vickers in the Hoops defence, Brazilian striker Edmilson tried a speculative shot from 40 yards and it landed on the roof of Schmeichel's goal. Celtic's corner count mounted but to no avail and Hoops fans – perhaps also frustrated by a lack of transfer activity – began singing 'sack the board' as the game moved into the final quarter. In the 75th minute, after sustaining an injury defending a corner, Zarutskiy had to be replaced by understudy Temirlan Anarbekov and he had his head bandaged and covered by a protective cap after taking a knock. The visitors, though, were wasting time at every opportunity and 10 added minutes gave Celtic scope, but Maeda spurned a gift when he ran through alone and could only manage a tame shot which was easily saved by Anarbekov and there were boos at the end from irate supporters.

Rodgers in telling response to 'sack the board' Celtic chant

Supporters inside Celtic Park vented their fury at the board over the lack of transfer activity this summer at full-time. Loud boos could be heard with chants of 'sack the board' echoing inside the stadium both during the match and after the final whistle. However, Rodgers suggested it's managers who pay the price rather than the board at any football club as he responded to the fan anger. Asked if he could understand the frustration from supporters, he told TNT Sports: "Yeah, absolutely. But I also understand when it's 'sack the board,' I don't know any board who gets sacked. Read more: "It's normally the manager at any club, it's the manager who gets the sack, not the board. "But listen we have to go away and analyse tonight and see where we could be better and like i said, the guys who are out there, they're giving their all and giving everything. "But like we've said many times, in order to progress at this level and into European football, we need to have more. It's as simple as that. "We won't have that for Tuesday, we get concentration now for Saturday, it's a big game against Livingston." On whether his squad has enough quality to compete in the Champions League, should they advance to the league phase, Rodgers said: "I've said it clear. I can't keep going on about it every press conference I have, it's so, so clear what this team needs. "Nights like that do (highlight it). "It's always going to, each level you go through - this is a good team that understands the game, they're talented players and they're used to winning. "We know what we have to improve."

Ross County boss Don Cowie's message for frustrated fans ahead of Partick Thistle clash

Don Cowie insists he shares Ross County fans' frustration – but vowed to help turn their early season slump around. The Staggies manager has seen his side bow out of the Premier Sports Cup group stages, draw 2-2 at Airdrieonians after leading 2-0 and lose 1-0 late on against expected title rivals St Johnstone. On Saturday, they host Partick Thistle in the Championship – just four weeks after the Jags won 3-1 in Dingwall in the League Cup. Mark Wilson's team have also just one point from their first two league games – but their flawless form in the cup has taken them into a quarter-final showdown against holders Celtic next month. Cowie and his players have been under fire from sections of the support due to poor performances and results, and he knows it. Cowie said: 'I share the same frustration, and the players share it as well. 'The frustration is valid, especially for the fans. Like I say, each signing that has come in, it's been like 'that's a good signing'. 'That's what we feel as a football club. We're really happy with what we've taken in. 'But now ultimately it is down to the players. We've all set out our stall, between me, the board and the players, what our goals are going into this season. 'Now it is a case of 'go and show it'. 'There's no reason to panic this early in the season, but we've still got to recognise in the games we've played that we should have performed better. 'Yes, it is only two games in, but we should demand more, expect more. 'What I want to see now on Saturday is a team that comes out of the traps flying. 'To go and show what they're capable of and give the fans that positivity in terms of what they're seeing on the pitch.' Amid the 13 arrivals at County this summer have been defenders Declan Gallagher and Alex Iacovitti, wingers Adam Emslie and Gary Mackay-Steven, midfielders Jamie Lindsay and Ross Docherty and forward Nicky Clark. The Staggies head coach stressed that there was a collective agreement that the standard of player arriving at County over the summer brought a sense of excitement. He said: 'We have all spoken about our recruitment – everyone outside and inside the club have been really happy with the individuals who have come in. 'We knew there was always a possibility it could take a bit of time for them to gel and perform collectively as a team. 'The players recognise they need to perform better individually and, if they do that, then we'd be in a better place. 'We will have had two weeks since our last game and there needs to be a real determination to take the game to Partick.' Cowie also addressed the question over whether a regular squad overhaul at the Dingwall club is a challenge. He added: 'It's part of football. 'It's not something we've not gone through before. 'You have got to adapt and it's no excuse. 'Previously, we've had a lot of loan or younger players come in and they're having to adapt. 'We've signed a lot of seasoned pros with a lot of experience in the game. 'They recognise they need to perform a lot better than they have.' *** County's bid, meanwhile, to bring Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson to the club on loan has reportedly ended with the 37-year-old opting to remain at Dens Park. The former Hartlepool, Motherwell, Dundee United and St Mirren keeper was wanted as competition for Ross Laidlaw and Brad Foster and the clubs had agreed on the move until January. However, Carson has turned down the switch, preferring to fight for the number one spot with Jon McCracken, who is Steven Pressley's current top pick for the Dark Blues.
