CAREC region sans PRC attracts $13.3bn FDI inflow in 2023
The bank in its report, 'deepening trade and transport facilitation policy analysis of border crossing points expanding the CAREC corridor performance measurement and monitoring framework', stated that CAREC region (excluding the PRC) attracted FDI inflow of $13.3 billion in 2023, accounting for just one percent of global FDI, significantly lower than sub-regions such as Southeast Asia (17 percent) and South Asia (three percent).
Kazakhstan received nearly one-fourth of this inflow, reflecting its openness to foreign investment and international integration. However, as a share of gross domestic product, Mongolia stood out with FDI of 11 percent, far exceeding countries such as Pakistan (0.5 percent) and Kazakhstan and Tajikistan (1.2 percent each).
ADB-funded CAREC project: NHA rejects irregularity claims
The report stated that to bridge economic disparities through regional cooperation, CAREC has mobilised over $51 billion in investments across 276 regional projects since 2001, with a strong focus on developing multimodal transportation networks, enhancing trade, enabling free movement of people and goods, and laying the groundwork for the development of economic corridors.
Of these investments, transport has the biggest share, with about 67.4 percent or about $34.3 billion; while trade facilitation and trade policy accounts for 2.7 percent or about $1.4 billion.

In an interesting but important development, US President Donald Trump has said he 'will substantially raise tariffs on India' over its purchases of Russian oil. In his new post, the US President assailed New Delhi for buying Russian oil and then selling it. Over the weekend the Indian government had said that India would keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump threats, prompting White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller to officially accuse India of effectively financing Russia's war in Ukraine by purchasing oil from Moscow. The Indian diaspora or NRIs (non-resident Indians) in North America in particular are being chastised for Modi government's policy of funding the Russian war to kill innocent men and women in Ukraine. India deserved it because it had been trying to appease both the US and Russia simultaneously by pursuing the policy of running with the hares and hunting with the hounds. Now for the Sangh Parivar chickens have finally come home to roost. The consequences of India's bad actions are therefore unpleasant and unavoidable. CDA chief orders third-party audit of uplift projects
ISLAMABAD: Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa on Monday directed third-party audits for all ongoing development projects, and ordered expedited completion of Islamabad Model Jail, IT Facilitation Centres, electric tram feasibility, and the operationalisation of the Blue Area Food Street. The directives came during a review meeting at the CDA headquarters. The meeting was attended by senior CDA and ICT Administration officials, including Member Administration and Estate Talat Mehmood, Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, Member Environment Esfandyar Baloch, and others. The meeting reviewed progress on critical infrastructure and urban uplift projects such as Shaheen Chowk, Kashmir Chowk, Faizabad Interchange, Gardenia Hub (CDA Model Nursery), Pak Secretariat uplift, modern streetlight installation, police station upgrades, Safari Park, Theme Park, cable car, ferris wheel, and dancing fountain initiatives. Randhawa also instructed a detailed financial study of all projects recently transferred from PWD to CDA, including cost assessments, fund utilisation, and quality evaluation. He tasked the Planning and Engineering Wings to develop a strategy for the timely and efficient completion of these projects. In addition, directives were issued to accelerate the rollout of electric buses, establish charging stations, enhance the solid waste management system, improve water supply across sectors, and upgrade all 279 parks in Islamabad. Gaza victims: Alkhidmat Foundation dispatches 28th consignment of aid
LAHORE: Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan has dispatched its 28th consignment of relief aid comprising 100 tons of essential supplies for the distressed families in Gaza facing an acute food crisis. The latest consignment, arranged in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), was flown from Islamabad via a special aircraft to Amman, Jordan, from where it will be transported to Gaza for distribution among displaced Palestinian families. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, President of Alkhidmat Foundation Dr. Hafeez-ur-Rehman, and senior NDMA officials were present at the airport to oversee the departure of the cargo. Speaking on the occasion, Dar commended Alkhidmat's tireless efforts in Gaza and assured the Foundation of the government's full support in continuing its humanitarian operations. 'The people of Gaza are going through unimaginable suffering. We appreciate Alkhidmat's continued dedication and will extend all possible cooperation,' said the Deputy Prime Minister. According to Dr. Hafeez-ur-Rehman, the shipment includes 65 tons of canned food, 20 tons of powdered milk for children, 5 tons of biscuits, and 10 tons of essential medicines. He noted that Alkhidmat has been actively involved in Gaza's relief efforts for the past 22 months, dispatching thousands of tons of aid via multiple air and sea consignments. 'Out of the 28 consignments sent so far, 24 have been transported via air cargo and 4 by sea. The aid has included food, cooked meals, meat, medicines, tents, and other essential supplies,' said Dr. Rehman. Alkhidmat maintains a field office in Cairo, Egypt, to coordinate ongoing relief efforts. On-ground operations inside Gaza include the distribution of cooked meals, clean drinking water, and critical medical supplies.
