Dialogue debates libraries' role in sustainable development

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth on Monday conducted a dialogue session titled 'Culture, Library Science, and Sustainable Development' as part of the Civilisational Horizons programme.
The session debated the challenges facing libraries due to the digital revolution and the spread of the Internet, and how libraries have been able to adapt to these transformations and provide reliable information. It also highlighted the role libraries play in supporting education, scientific research and innovation.
The session addressed the relationship between culture and Library and Information Science (LIS), and the role of libraries as cultural institutions that have contributed throughout the ages to enriching human culture and promoting the values of pluralism, tolerance and freedom of expression.
The session highlighted the vital role libraries play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by organising knowledge and managing the vast intellectual output through smart systems that keep pace with technological developments.
The session discussed the contributions of libraries to enhancing artificial intelligence, thanks to their vast databases, and their role in training users to use these technologies to produce reliable and knowledge-based texts. It also addressed the reality of LIS in the Sultanate of Oman, the information strategy and digital transformation within the Oman Vision 2040 as well as the most prominent challenges facing the library sector in the Sultanate of Oman. It also reviewed investment opportunities in cultural and creative industries and the role of libraries in this field. — ONA

The approach focused on introducing practical AI applications for the development of promotional content, the analysis of sentiments and predictive targeting. The workshop also included presentations about successful regional and international models on the use of AI in this field, with the aim of upgrading the efficiency of workers in the tourism sector and enabling them to adopt global practices in tourism promotion. The overall objective is to enhance the Sultanate of Oman's position as a prominent tourist destination. A training programme associated with the workshop focused on the ethical use of artificial intelligence tools and the analysis of tourism data to be used in conducting promotional and marketing campaigns that align with the objectives of Omani tourism brands. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism will announce the launch of a sustainability training programme via the Partner Support Platform, which seeks to build the capacity of tourism sector workers and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve a balance between tourism growth and the preservation of natural and cultural resources. The workshop was one of the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry to develop the tourism sector's potential and ensure its readiness to deal with future needs in a manner that serves the goals of Oman Vision 2040. — ONA

Two Omani projects among top 13 globally

MUSCAT: Two Omani research projects have been selected among the top 13 global projects to be showcased at the 66th edition of the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) 2025. Oman is represented at the forum by five innovative scientific projects, chosen from over 340 local innovative and research projects. The selection of two Omani projects for this elite global list reflects the excellence of Omani youth in scientific research and innovation. Innovator Hala al Zaabi presented the project titled 'Tannova: an Omani Solution – Statistically Optimised Leachate Treatment with Date Pit Tannins and AOP.' This project offers an innovative environmental solution for treating industrial waste through eco-friendly methods that utilise local natural resources. The second project by innovator Al Muntaser al Maamari, titled 'Ecofie: AI-Driven Green Hydrogen Production From Mesquite and Industrial Effluents', aims to develop and provide sustainable solutions in clean energy using artificial intelligence technologies. The selection of these two projects embodies the level of scientific excellence achieved by youth in Oman and their growing role in presenting innovative research solutions to address global challenges, particularly in the fields of environment, energy and modern technologies. The forum, taking place in London, from July 23 to August 6, 2025, with the participation of elite researchers and talented students from various countries worldwide, is considered one of the most prominent scientific platforms. — ONA

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has launched the 'Barmajan' Digital Transformation Hackathon, with the participation of 105 individuals representing 28 teams of developers, programmers, UX/UI designers and business analysts. The event aims to deliver innovative and implementable digital solutions for the ministry's sectors. Through this hackathon, which will run for eight full weeks at the National Museum, the ministry seeks to convey several key messages — most notably, that youth are capable of developing digital solutions for institutions while empowering them to harness their creativity in the field of digital transformation. The hackathon also aims to strengthen community engagement by involving them in creating solutions that support government institutions and drive digital transformation. The participants will face numerous technical challenges and training sessions designed to guide them in achieving results and developing suitable solutions that will serve both government and private institutions. - ONA
