Be gentle with your body – you need it more than it needs you

Irish Times6 days ago
No getting away from it in this life. It's there when you get up in the morning and go to bed at night. Wherever you go, or when, it is with you. Troublesome and a nuisance at times, it frequently complains and can punish you until it gets what it wants, which may not always be good for you.
It takes pleasure in lots of things, some of which embarrass you, and, generally, overcomes your more high-minded resistance. Where other people are concerned, it can invade their space. In the main that is unintentional, as it fears assault.
And it sure can let you down, particularly the morning after a night before or when it insists on going to the loo even though you are already so late for that meeting, that gathering, that interview.
It shares all your joys and your sorrows, all your most intimate moments, never, ever leaving any space for privacy, regardless. And you would not have it otherwise. For where would you be without your body?

As with so much in life – parents, siblings, where/when we're born – it is given to us without choice and, if we're lucky, is ordinary, normal, healthy.
It is always best to get on well with it too, as the body is master, that is all. Look after it and most other things fall into place. Do not and it will have bitter revenge.

The body is one of the most complex and intelligent biological systems on Earth. Its largest organ, the skin, covers nearly two square metres.
Its heart pumps non-stop for more decades than you care to guess at and the liver – its largest internal organ – performs more than 500 tasks without your awareness. Unless you upset it with such as excess alcohol. All hell lies there.
It has 206 bones, the largest being the femur or thigh bone, with 27 in the hand alone. It has 230 joints with 33 vertebrae, and up to 800 muscles.
The brain averages at 1,400 grammes (in most people!). Men, of course, have bigger hearts than women – at 340 grammes to 150 grammes, and men also have an extra 'pump', the prostate.
Be gentle with your body. You need it more than it needs you.
Body, from Old English bodig, for 'trunk of a man or beast'.

Mairead McGuinness to drop out of presidential race

Former European Commissioner and MEP Mairead McGuinness is dropping out of the presidential election race for health reasons. In a statement she said: 'I have made the very difficult decision to withdraw my name as the Fine Gael nominee for the Presidential election. 'This decision is not lightly taken and follows a stay in hospital last week. 'My priority now is my health. Given that the election is in a short couple of months, I do not believe that I have the strength to give the campaign my all.' READ MORE 'I am taking this decision on medical advice and while it is extremely difficult, it is the right decision for me and my family.' Ms McGuinness was one of just two official candidates in the race and she led recent opinion polls . Her surprise departure from the race throws the election wide open. The other candidate who has enough confirmed support to secure a place on the ballot paper is Independent TD Catherine Connolly who has the backing of The Social Democrats, Labour and People Before Profit. Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin are still deliberating on their approach to the presidential election and whether or not they will run candidates. In recent days businessman Gareth Sheridan has announced his intention to run saying he will seek nominations from local authorities . People who wish to enter the race must have nominations from 20 Oireachtas members or four county or city councils. In her statement Ms McGuinness said: 'I appreciate that this will come as a shock and disappointment to party members and colleagues in Fine Gael, but our political family is strong. 'I have spoken with the Tánaiste and Party leader, Simon Harris, and thank him for his support and understanding. 'I also want to thank all of those people who have done so much to support me, now and in the past. 'My focus now is my health and my family, and I ask for privacy in the time ahead.' Mr Harris said: 'Mairead McGuinness has made an incredible contribution to public life in Ireland and in Europe. 'It was our clear view in Fine Gael and the view of many people across Ireland that Mairead would make an excellent President of Ireland. 'Mairead's health will not now allow this. 'This has come as an awful shock to us all. Mairead is a valued member of our Fine Gael family. It is absolutely essential that she now prioritises her health and I know I speak for everyone when I wish her all the very best on that journey. 'In the coming days, Fine Gael, like others, will consider further the presidential election. Our Executive Council will convene to do this. 'But that's for the time ahead, not for today. Today I want to pay tribute to Mairead. I want to thank her for all she has done. I want to wish her and Tom and their family all the best at this time and she knows we are all sending her our very best.'

Peadar Toibin joins calls for resignation of Tanaiste Simon Harris

Aontú leader Peadar Toibín has joined calls for the resignation of Tánaiste Simon Harris over his failure to meet the parents of a young boy who waited seven years for scoliosis surgery. Harvey Morrison Sherratt, 9, died last month after years of pain, during which he struggled to breathe. Parents Gillian and Stephen have since revealed that the former Minister of Health had promised to meet with them after Harvey was removed from the waiting list without their knowledge. The hashtags 'Justice for Harvey' and 'Resign Harris' have been trending on X for days, with fellow political leaders weighing in on the matter. Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1on Wednesday, Mr Tóibín said it was 'very important' for the country to have 'some level of accountability and responsibility.' Pic: Sam Boal/Collins Photos He said: 'When Simon Harris was Minister for Health, he promised in 2017 that no child would be left waiting for longer than four months for scoliosis surgery — that's a promise he failed to keep.' Elsewhere, Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald took to social media on Tuesday confirming she had written to the Tánaiste regarding the death of Harvey. 'The state completely failed this bravest, strongest and most courageous boy & his family,' she said online, 'First by the intolerable delays in his treatments, and then by the Tánaiste's failure to follow through on his commitment to meet the family. 'Simon Harris must now urgently meet with Harvey's parents and explain face-to-face why he broke his important promise to them. It's the very least they are owed, having lost so much.' On Wednesday afternoon, grieving mother Gillian publicly lambasted the Tánaiste over his claims reported in the Daily Mail that he 'did intervene with the Department of Health.' She said: 'He seems to forget that I emailed in a month after that Dáil date and laid it all on he table. Don't pretend you didn't know Simon. Don't you dare dishonour Harvey by pretending you didn't know.'

Glanbia increases full-year earnings guidance despite slump in profit

Nutritionals group Glanbia has increased its earnings forecast for the year while appointing a new chairman. The company, which has been struggling to contend with a spike in the cost of whey proteins, a key input, said headline revenue for the first six months of the year increased by 6 per cent to $1.9 billion. Profits, however, were down by 7.5 per cent to $132 million. The company also announced the sale of its Dutch e-commerce platform Body&Fit for an undisclosed sum while noting there was 'no news yet' on the planned sale of its underperforming dieting brand SlimFast. READ MORE The Dublin-listed group upgraded its full-year earnings guidance to 130-133 cent per share, up from 124-130 cent, as a result of what it described as 'increased revenue momentum' in the second quarter across its performance nutrition (PN) division. The PN element of the business has been the star performer n recent years but it has been hit by a jump in the cost of whey. The company unveiled Paul Duffy, a former chairman and chief executive of Pernod Ricard North America, as chair designate to replace Donal Gaynor who is due to step down from the role at the end of the year. 'Today's results reflect a first half of significant execution and progress as we generated 6 per cent revenue growth in the period, underpinned by strong growth in health & nutrition (H&N) and dairy nutrition (DN) and a sequential improvement in performance nutrition through the period as the group navigated significant macroeconomic volatility,' chief executive Hugh McGuire said. 'We are today upgrading our full year adjusted EPS guidance to 130 to 133 cent as a result of increased revenue momentum in PN and improved margins in H&N,' he said. 'The category trends remain positive, and we expect to see continued improvement in volumes across PN in the second half of the year with continued momentum in H&N and DN,' he said.
