Strip resort will pay six-figure settlement in religious discrimination, retaliation lawsuit

Miami Herald08-07-2025
LAS VEGAS - A megaresort on the Strip agreed to pay a six-figure sum to settle a religious discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The Venetian hotel-casino will pay $850,000 and implement "significant policy changes" via a three-year consent decree to settle the suit, the EEOC said in a news release.
The federal agency said The Venetian Resort Las Vegas violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by "refusing to accommodate the sincerely held religious beliefs of a class of employees" and allegedly "retaliated against employees who opposed these acts of religious discrimination." According to the EEOC lawsuit, "in some cases denial of accommodation led to discipline, denial of promotion opportunities and discharge or constructive discharge."
"We are aware of the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The complaint was procedural in nature as the parties have already reached a voluntary resolution in the matter, with no admission of liability or wrongdoing," a Venetian spokesperson said Thursday.
Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes Las Vegas, commended The Venetian for "their cooperation in the early resolution of this lawsuit and agreeing to implement proactive measures to ensure religious accommodation requests are handled more effectively."
"The law protects the rights of workers in our pluralistic society to live out their various faiths in the workplace," said EEOC Acting Chair Andrea Lucas. "As this case shows, reasonable accommodation might look like, among other things, allowing certain days off for Sabbatarians or Buddhists and allowing beards for Orthodox Christians. It also means not punishing anyone who speaks out in favor of these rights."
The Venetian will pay the six-figure sum as well as provide additional training for employees, managers and supervisors on employee rights and the obligations of employers when it comes to religious accommodations under Title VII. The decree also requires The Venetian to hire an independent third party to help review and update its religious accommodation policies and complaint procedures, and to keep track of whether the company is following the rules during the 36 months the decree is in effect.
The Venetian is owned by VICI Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust, and operated by Apollo Global Management Inc., a New York City-based investment firm. Apollo and VICI purchased The Venetian, the Palazzo hotel-casino and The Venetian Expo for $6.25 billion in 2022 from the Las Vegas Sands Corp.
The charges of discrimination and retaliation that prompted the EEOC lawsuit were filed with the agency prior to the 2022 sale. The settlement amount is being paid by the current operators of The Venetian.
The aggrieved employees who filed complaints with the EEOC belonged to diverse faiths, including but not limited to, Orthodox Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Buddhism, according to the lawsuit.
The EEOC filed its lawsuit in June in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada "following a lengthy voluntary pre-litigation mediation process after a resolution could not be achieved through the agency's conciliation process," the release said.

Your Face Could Cost You The Job: The Dangerous Rise Of Facial Recognition At Work

The Covid-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of remote work. Many employers desperate to track and monitor employees working away from the office implemented different technology tools to surveille employees. According to one 2025 report, more than half of fortune 100 employees were required to return back to the office fulltime. With many back-to-office mandates in place, remnants of surveillance culture have remained. Many companies are using facial recognition software to manage employees. A recent survey by ExpressVPN indicated that 74% of U.S. employers are using online monitoring and surveillance tools with 67% using biometric tracking like facial recognition and fingerprint scans. Employers use facial recognition software in a number of different ways: to track employee attendance, to identify employees, to interview and screen job candidates, to reduce the number of employee touchpoints, and to track employees (this is common for delivery and gig workers). What are the vulnerabilities and limitations of using facial recognition software in the workplace and how does it reinforce biases? There have been several different cases where facial recognition software has caused harm, reinforcing biases in the workplace. In 2025, a complaint was filed with the Colorado Civil Rights Division and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against the software company Intuit and the human resources assessment software vendor HireVue. The complaint alleges that the AI used by HireVue resulted in an Indigenous and Deaf woman being denied a promotion based on her race and disability. In a separate case, a makeup artist at a leading brand claimed to have been fired in 2020 because of a video interview through HireVue, where the facial recognition software marked her poorly for her body language during the interview. In 2024, an Uber Eats driver won a case where he alleged that that company fired him because of racist facial recognition software. The former employee claimed that he was fired after the company's verification checks, which use facial recognition software, failed to recognize his face. Scholar and writer Dr. Joy Buolamwini has focused much of her research on the flaws with facial recognition technology discussing in her book Unmasking AI as well as the documentary Coded Bias how the technology is less accurate at identifying darker skin tones. There is a wealth of evidence that indicates that facial recognition technology disproportionately impacts marginalized communities. This technology frequently misidentifies Black people leading to wrongful arrests. One 2025 study indicated that facial recognition tools had higher error rates for adults with Down syndrome. Researchers also note that facial recognition tools are less accurate for transgender individuals and these tools struggle to identify non-binary folks. Integrating facial recognition tools into the workplace can have deleterious effects on employees. A 2023 assessment of feedback shared with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy indicated that digital surveillance in the workplace creates a sense of distrust among employees, making them feel constantly monitored and leading to a decline in productivity and morale. Workers also noted that digital surveillance could limit unionizing, deterring this type of behavior in the workplace. There were also employee concerns about data privacy and how the data collected would be used. Employers should think twice about implementing facial recognition software in the workplace. Not only is the type of technology prone to bias, but it can also erode employee trust and morale. If organizations have this type of technology in place already, they should request more information from the vendor about audits and what accountability measures are in place to ensure accuracy and mitigate bias. Employees should know their rights and there must be transparency around how data is collected, stored, and used. We must deeply consider the future we are creating when our face holds the key to whether we praised or punished.

José Andrés's Iconic Steakhouse Announces Its Opening Date

Since opening at the very north end of the Strip in 2014, José Andrés's Bazaar Meat has distinguished itself as one of the best steakhouses in the U.S. — and one of the most distinctive in Las Vegas's ever-evolving culinary scene. The steakhouse closed at the Sahara on Thursday, July 31, ahead of its move to a new home. The José Andrés Group told Eater that Bazaar Meat will reopen at the Palazzo at the Venetian Resort on September 4. Bazaar Meat's new location will sit on the lower level of the Palazzo, in the former home of the restaurant-cum-car museum Dal Toro Ristorante — part of the Venetian's $1.5 billion reinvestment project. 'I really think what is happening with the Venetian will change the Las Vegas landscape as a whole, in particular, on the food and beverage side,' Sam Bakhshandehpour, global CEO for the José Andrés Group, says. 'So for us to be at the forefront of that and be one of the leaders coming into this property, we thought it was the right time to make the move over to Venetian.' The relocation south to a more central section of the Strip also puts the restaurant in closer proximity to the resort's sprawling convention space, the Sphere, and a more heavily trafficked gaming floor. 'This is a mix of all walks of life coming to the property,' Bakhshandehpour says. The restaurant will debut an entirely new design while maintaining the dramatic live-fire grills that helped establish Bazaar Meat as a temple of theatrical carnivory. Much of the original staff is making the move as well, meaning longtime guests can expect to see familiar faces behind the bar and on the floor. The tasting menus — which often span a dozen or more courses — will return with José Andrés classics like crispy caviar cones, beefsteak tartare, and the signature Washugyu bone-in rib-eye, a crossbreed of Japanese Tajima wagyu and Black Angus. Executive chef Frank Medina will also introduce new menu items to complement the restaurant's new space, though the team is keeping those under wraps for now. Louiie Victa By next year, the Venetian will be a veritable steakhouse destination, with Emeril Lagasse's Delmonico Steakhouse, Wolfgang Puck's Cut, and a two-story Smith & Wollensky already in place. Michelin-starred Cote is on track to open this year in a 10,000-square-foot space, and Southern California's Boa Steakhouse will join the Grand Canal Shoppes. But Bakhshandehpour isn't concerned about standing out. 'Bazaar Meat is a twist on a meat experience like no other,' he says. 'It's rooted in Spanish. You have incredible meats from around the world that you can't get anywhere else.' That includes the whole suckling pig, slow-roasted over an open flame, and the intensely marbled Spanish vaca vieja from older cows. Other dishes on the menu have become icons of their own, like the jamón Ibérico tacos on delicate nori, foie gras swaddled in a puff of cotton candy, and croquetas de pollo served in a translucent sneaker. Reservations are now open ahead of Bazaar Meat's September 4 opening. In the meantime, Andrés's Bazaar Mar will offer a special menu of Bazaar Meat favorites to tide fans over until the reopening. Back at the Sahara, Bazaar Meat's former home will soon become chef Kwame Onwuachi's Maroon, a Caribbean steakhouse and his first Las Vegas restaurant. The Las Vegas steakhouse has been central to the city's identity for decades, and Bazaar Meat has helped define its modern form — a genre that continues to evolve. Now, as both the city and the steakhouse tradition keep shifting, Bazaar Meat is stepping onto an even bigger stage.
