KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg has dismissed claims that the state's efforts to assert its rights over oil and gas management would "kill" Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).
He said the state government is committed to establishing strong cooperation with Petronas, emphasising that collaboration between the national oil company and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) would benefit both Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.
"I thank the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for his understanding. That is why he approved Petros as the gas aggregator for Sarawak.
"He understands Sarawak's struggle to reclaim its rights as stipulated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
"I extend my gratitude to him, and we will continue to manage our resources fairly. This is not about 'killing' Petronas," he said during the launch of the Pasi Road to Sibu-Tanjung Manis and the Batang Rajang Bridge in Sarikei today.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, and Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
The 1.44km bridge, valued at RM321 million, is a key component in the state government's efforts to enhance connectivity in central Sarawak.
It also reduces the distance between Sarikei and Tanjung Manis from 122km to just 53km, cutting travel time from two hours and 30 minutes to 45 minutes.
Abang Johari further stated that Sarawak's efforts to assert its rights are firmly grounded in the Federal Constitution and MA63.
"The Federal Constitution takes precedence over the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974. Therefore, those who criticise Sarawak's struggle clearly do not understand the Federal Constitution and MA63.
"As long as our struggle is based on the law, the Sarawak Government will continue to defend its rights," he added.

‘Many are on contract', Anwar says amid concerns over Petronas job cuts

PUTRAJAYA, June 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today addressed concerns over Petronas' recent decision to cut around 5,000 jobs. When asked to comment on the state oil company's announcement, Anwar said many of the affected positions were contract-based. 'Many are on contract,' he told reporters briefly after attending Friday prayers at Surau Al-Ikhwan, Jalan Pinggiran Putra here. Yesterday, financial news agency Bloomberg reported that Petronas will cut about 10 per cent of its workforce as part of a major restructuring to reduce costs amid falling crude oil prices. The state-owned oil and gas company plans to cut more than 5,000 jobs, CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said in a media briefing. He added that Petronas will implement a hiring and promotion freeze until the end of 2026.

Rights lawyer slams Penang's ‘racist' housing discount

Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan urged the DAP-led Penang government to immediately withdraw the initiative and warned against policies that could deepen racial and religious divisions. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A human rights lawyer has criticised the Penang government's decision to offer a 5% discount on homes exclusively to Indian Muslims under the Madani Home Ownership Campaign (MOC), calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional. Rajesh Nagarajan said the policy unfairly favoured a specific race and religion which undermined the principles of equality enshrined in the Federal Constitution. Advertisement 'This initiative is deeply divisive and unacceptable. 'Why is the Penang state government rewarding Indians who are of the Islamic faith and punishing those who are of the Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Baha'i or Sikh faith? If this is not discrimination, I don't know what is,' he said in a statement. He cited Articles 8(1) and 8(2) of the Federal Constitution, which guarantee that all persons are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection, regardless of religion, race, or descent. Rajesh also took aim at state housing and environment committee chairman S Sundarajoo, accusing him of practising 'state-sanctioned racial discrimination' and setting a dangerous precedent. 'Public funds and state-backed initiatives must benefit all Malaysians equally, and must not be used for preferential treatment for selected groups. It is clearly a racist policy,' he said. He urged the DAP-led Penang government to immediately withdraw the initiative and warned against policies that could deepen racial and religious divisions. 'This is not an apartheid country where certain races are more equal than others,' he added. Yesterday, Bernama reported that the Penang government would offer a discount to Indian Muslims who purchased residential and commercial units under the MOC, from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026. Sundarajoo said the initiative, approved at a state planning committee meeting on Wednesday, was aimed at boosting home ownership, supporting the approval of strategic new projects, and creating a more inclusive and competitive property sector.

Sports Toto failed to prove Perlis gaming ban decision, says court

Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The High Court in Kangar refused STM Lottery Sdn Bhd and four others leave to bring judicial proceedings against the Perlis state government, saying the application was 'frivolous'. PETALING JAYA: The Kangar High Court dismissed a bid by Sports Toto Malaysia and four others to revive their gaming business in Perlis, saying the application failed to identify any 'official decision' that could be made subject to judicial review. Justice Arik Sanusi Yeop Johari said the applicants had not identified any decision by the Perikatan Nasional-led state government that had impacted their livelihood. Advertisement Instead, they relied on printed and online news reports about the state's purported refusal to issue lottery operators licences for business premises, the judge said. 'The applicants only cited printed and online news reports (about the purported decision). 'These news reports cannot be considered an 'official decision' made by the state government, and thus the application is frivolous,' Arik said in a judgment issued last week. The judgment set out the grounds for a decision he had handed down last year. The applicants – STM Lottery Sdn Bhd, Leong Jenn Kiang, Chin Soo Shian, C Santha and Yip Kok Chyun – are appealing the decision to the Court of Appeal. They are seeking to quash the Kangar municipal council's decision not to renew the licences for their business premises, thereby preventing them from operating their lottery business. They contend that matters relating to the issuance of gaming licences are within the purview of federal law. For that reason, they said the state authorities' decision was irrational, ultra vires the powers vested in the municipal council and the state government, and contravened the Federal Constitution. However, Arik said the application for leave to bring judicial review proceedings was bound to fail for lack of a formal decision. The judge added that even if such a decision had been made, the matter was one of policy. 'The court does inquire into policy making decisions,' he said. The applicants' appeal will come up for case management in the Court of Appeal on June 16. Parallel case in Kedah Meanwhile, a High Court in Alor Setar last year quashed the Kedah government's refusal to renew the licences of several pool betting agents, their companies and officers. The court held that the state government had overstepped its powers under the Federal Constitution in doing so. It said pool betting and lotteries were matters within the federal government's purview, and that the state government had no power to ban them. The state government's appeal from that decision was heard by the Court of Appeal on May 26, which has reserved its judgment. The appeal has been fixed for case management on June 24. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
