Italy's Women's Six Nations decider with Wales moved due to Pope Francis' funeral

Independent23-04-2025

Italy's match against Wales in the Women's Six Nations has been moved to Sunday due to the funeral of Pope Francis.
The game was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday lunchtime, ahead of Scotland facing Ireland and the grand slam decider between England and France later in the afternoon, but has been postponed to the following day.
Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Monday aged 88. His funeral will be held at St Peter's Square on Saturday in front of the Basilica of St Peter before the burial in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The Women's Six Nations explained that, in-line with all other sporting activity in Italy being suspended, the match would instead take place on Sunday afternoon, with a kick-off of 12:30 PM local time. A one-minute silence will be observed ahead of the fixture.
On Tuesday, Italy's National Olympic Committee called for the suspension of all sporting events scheduled for Saturday and the tournament said both the Italian Rugby Federation and the Welsh Rugby Union agreed to respect their request.
'Following the recent and sad passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, Six Nations Rugby, the Italian Rugby Federation (FIR), and Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) are unified in respecting the invite from the President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, Giovanni Malagò, for National Sport's Federations, the Associated Sports Disciplines and the Sports Promotion Bodies in Italy to suspend all sporting events in the country on Saturday 26th April 2025, in conjunction with the funeral of the Holy Father Pope Francis.
'The kick-off times and dates of Scotland vs Ireland and England vs France remain unaffected. Scotland vs Ireland will kick-off at 14:30pm on Saturday at the Hive Stadium in Edinburgh while England vs France is scheduled for a 16:45 start at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham on Saturday.
'The game was still be played at the original venue of Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma, Italy on Sunday. '
Serie A also postponed Saturday's three fixtures until Sunday due to the Pope's funeral. The league postponed Monday's matches after the Pope's death, with the games rescheduled for Wednesday.

Napoli 'make contact' with Liverpool over Darwin Nunez transfer, but Man United star also features on 'Antonio Conte's three-man striker shortlist'

Napoli are reportedly targeting Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez for a summer move. The Reds broke their transfer record to sign Nunez from Benfica for £85million in 2022 but he is ready to leave Anfield after a lack of starting opportunities under Arne Slot. The 25-year-old scored seven times last season as Liverpool wrapped up the Premier League title and he is contracted until 2028. Saudi side Al-Nassr previously made enquiries to sign the Uruguay international in January and were prepared to offer £70m but Liverpool were unwilling to listen at that stage as their focus was on winning the league title. The Italian champions are now pushing for his signature as they look to become less reliant on Romelu Lukaku, and have made contact with the striker, according to Football Italia. Former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is looking to strenghthen his Napoli side as they look to retain the league next season and compete in the latter stages of the Champions League. The Naples outfit have also reportedly identified Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund or Udinese forward Lorenzo Lucca as alternatives. Hojlund's contract also does not expire until June 2028 with an option for a further year but his Old Trafford appears uncertain. The Dane cost United £64m plus a further £8m in potential add-ons when he made the move from Atalanta in August 2023. However, he has struggled to live up to that price-tag, managing just four goals in 32 Premier League games last season. Speaking after Denmark's 2-1 friendly victory over Northern Ireland on Saturday night, he told TV 2 Sport: 'I have a contract [until 2028], so I expect to play for Manchester United. 'I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. 'I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United. 'I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season.' Ruben Amorim's side are in the market for a new striker and will listen to suitable offers for Hojlund. Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is also being hunted by Napoli. The 25-year-old joined Chelsea's academy in 2007 and made his international debut on Tuesday night as England fell to a 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Chelsea slapped a £40million price tag on Chalobah in January, having valued him at £25m last summer. Asked about his future, Chalobah, who has also played for Ipswich, Huddersfield, and Lorient, said: 'For me, I just have to focus on the now, leave all the noise out there that is surrounding me and my future. Napoli are also closing in on a two-year deal for Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian will fly to Naples on Thursday for his medical and to take the formal steps needed to confirm his move from Manchester City. De Bruyne is leaving the Etihad Stadium after 10 years of legendary service, with his contract up on June 30.

Rare footage re-emerges of 19-year-old Tyson Fury brutally knocking out rival and leaving him in crumpled heap

RARE footage of Tyson Fury scoring a brutal knockout in the amateurs has re-emerged. Fury had a 31-4 record in the unpaid ranks but he turned professional in 2008 after being overlooked for the Olympics in favour of David Price. 5 5 But before doing so, the future two-time heavyweight world champion travelled to Philadelphia in 2007 for the Harrowgate Boxing Club. Fury competed for Belfast's Holy Family ABC and boxed in front of just a handful of spectators at the New Alhambra Sports and Entertainment Centre. Those in attendance would not have known they were watching a future star of the sport - but Fury's KO of Maurice Byarm might have been a hint. Fury - only 19 at the time -had the American hurt on the ropes with an uppercut and the follow up right hand ended the bout in the third and final round. Byarm himself turned pro in 2009 - two years after the loss to Fury but he failed to make an impact in the paid ranks. He was beaten by Bryant Jennings in 2012 and stopped by Magomed Abdusalamov the same year before leaving the sport. Byarm did return six years later in 2018 to beat Richard Carmack in his comeback fight but it marked his final fight. Fury meanwhile first became champ in 2015 when he stunned Wladimir Klitschko in Germany to win the WBA, IBF and WBO belts. But by 2017, he vacated the straps amid a battle with depression and substance abuse. But it paved the way for one of boxing's most remarkable comebacks as Fury returned in 2018 to challenge for the WBC title - controversially drawing to Deontay Wilder. Fury later beat Wilder twice to claim the belt but he eventually lost the gold and his unbeaten record in May to Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk, 38, also won the rematch in December and a month later Fury, 36, announced his retirement from boxing and has so far kept his word. 5 5 5

Chairman of Bready Cricket Club Norman Allen said the bigger games tend to go to Dublin and Belfast, so for them to get the West Indies was "huge"."We are determined to show Cricket Ireland that we can put on cricket as good as anybody," he told BBC Radio Foyle's North West Today Colhoun, 87, from Sion Mills, was Ireland's wicketkeeper in the clash against the West Indies 56 years ago."The ground was completely packed, there was maybe 3,000 people because this was a really big deal to have the West Indies here," he the local boy, he was tasked with taking the West Indies team to their hotel in Lifford, County led to speculation that Ossie had taken the team for a drink and that that was why they were off their game the next day."When we went over the bar was closed, they got no drink at all," he will be at the match on Saturday to ring the bell. 'Mops and brushes' The final preparations to get the cricket ground ready have been taking place all Rough, the interim general manager for the North West Cricket Union, said it was all hands to the pump."We've got people who normally work in finance and people who go out coaching dressing curtains, running around with mops and brushes, everybody is prepared to help," she addition to the matches, there are corporate events, a kids zone and a food village showcasing local half-time entertainment will be Irish and Scottish dancers and bagpipes."It is stressful but it is really exciting, we are all really invested," added Kathryn. However, the biggest pressure is probably being felt by Trevor Hamilton, who is in charge of making sure the ground is in peak condition."I would say my sleep at night isn't the same as usual, so it comes with a lot of nerves," he said."But I've been a lifelong member of Bready Cricket Club and so it's an immense honour to be hosting Ireland and the West Indies."Ironically, Bready's cricket colours are similar to the West Indies is because the people who set up the club loved the West Indies and were inspired by their culture of cricket."For this club to actually be able to host the West Indies is really special for all the cricketers here, but also for the local people to have international sport on their doorstep," added Kathryn Rough.
