Fundraiser in Caledonia to support Ukraine on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — While the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia remains thousands of miles away, it has had a seismic impact on people across the world — including some in West Michigan.
Oleksandra Soltinska, Olena Biielova and Merharyta Atrepiev have watched Ukraine, their home country, from afar through the duration of the war. It has taken its toll on all of them.
'It's really hard for any Ukrainians,' Biielova said.'It doesn't matter where you live, it's still your home country.

'Everyday, every morning, you check the news,' she continued. 'You worry if your relative's alive, if your friend's still there. It's just been an endless three and a half years.'
They are organizing an event from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Caledonia Lakeside Park with traditional Ukrainian food, music and dancing. Donations collected at the event will go toward medical supplies for Ukraine.
'We're going to help a lot for kids who lost their parents, for orphanage, and also for soldiers who's recovering here in the United States and trying to get prosthetics to keep their life somehow normal still,' Biielova said.

The upcoming event is one of several that have been put together for Ukrainians around West Michigan. Last year, Soltinska helped organize an event to raise money for six soldiers who need rehabilitation and prosthetics.
'We're just like one little family here, trying to help and support whoever needs that support over there,' Biielova said.

New sidewalks in Columbus boost ADA compliance

COLUMBUS, Mo. — Columbus continues its mission of bringing safer sidewalks to town. Its most recent project began last week and will bring new sidewalks east from the intersection of Highway 69 and Sycamore Street near Reeves Park. Over the past three years the city has received two 'Safe Routes to Schools' grants totaling more than 500 thousand dollars. The funding has helped and is helping upgrade sidewalks built 50 to 70 years ago and add new ones along with the crosswalks. They're also now ADA compliant. 'They're doing a really, really good job on the sidewalks. Very expensive. Put a whole new high school street, has sidewalks from Maple Street out to the highway. So, it's really been it's really been an improvement on the sidewalk. We have a lot of sidewalks that need to be improved,' said Larry Hiatt, Columbus Resident and Business Owner. 'We certainly see the benefit to safety or for pedestrians and bicyclists to having a sidewalk because previously there wasn't one available and we did have an unfortunate incident and that will help to discourage the future,' said Jake Letner, Columbus City Administrator. Jake Letner also told us they hope to apply for more grants in the future. This current project is scheduled to be finished by August. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Weir loses state food aid as emergency program funding fails

WEIR. Kan. — One Southeast Kansas community program that receives commodities from the state is now on pause. Once a month, the city of Weir receives commodities from the state to give to residents who are in need of food. However, this month city leaders received word from the Emergency Food Assistance Program or TEFAP that funding to deliver to communities like Weir didn't come through. That caused the community to cancel this month's commodities distribution. About 35 residents from Weir, Scammon and West Mineral take advantage of the program each month, receiving canned and frozen foods. 'Some of them are elderly, and if they don't get it from us, they don't get it. You know, some of them get snap, but that's kind of in the range of being cut, too. So, if they you know, these people, they get hungry like everybody. You know, they need the food,' said Milt Alexander. Alexander says without federal funding for this program, he's now concerned about other commodities programs aimed at feeding seniors. He says they don't know if they'll be able to pick the program back up in July or not. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
