Older people in many areas have on average more than £95,000 in mortgage debt
A growing number of over 50s are moving towards retirement saddled with thousands of pounds in mortgage debt. Research from life insurance group SunLife found 14% of over 50s are still paying off a mortgage. The region with the highest proportion was Northern Ireland, where 20% of over 50s are still making repayments, with an average of £50,409.09 in mortgage debt to pay off.
This was followed by the North West of England, where 19% of people in this age group still having a mortgage, with on average £48,839.55 outstanding to pay. Yet 30% of over 50s in the region have no private pensions at all.

There area with the highest average mortgage debt for over 50s was East Anglia, with £97,015.63 outstanding. This was followed by London, with £96,471.43 on average left to pay and the South East, where average mortgage liabilities stand at £95,905.77.

Scotland was the area where the most people had some debts to repay, with 53% of those surveyed with some form of debt. Mark Screeton CEO of SunLife, said: "Our research shows a clear 'postcode lottery' when it comes to retirement, where people's ability to enjoy later life appears to be impacted by where they live.
"Whether it is mortgage repayments dragging into retirement or higher levels of consumer debt, older people in some areas are facing greater financial concerns than others." He warned that older Londoners in particular may be struggling: "In London, particularly there seems to be a 'perfect storm' of low homeownership, high debt, below-average income, and intense financial anxiety, all at a time in life when many would hope to feel more secure."
In the capital, just over half of over 50s have some debts. The average mortgage holder pays £1,229.79 a month in repayments with an average income of £31,164.34, or around £2,590 a month, meaning almost half of their monthly income is going towards their mortgage.

Transfer news live - Man Utd's Mbeumo move hijacked, Liverpool's Wirtz medical

This summer's transfer window is on pause, not that you'd think it with so many deals bubbling away in the background. Signings can't officially take place, but that will all change in a matter of days. Tottenham are looking to get the jump on Manchester United as they pursue Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. The forward could follow Thomas Frank across London with the Europa League winners submitting a hefty offer. Liverpool are also about to part with huge sums after a British-record deal for Florian Wirtz was agreed with £100million being paid up front to Bayer Leverkusen. Arsenal continue their search for a striker as Viktor Gyokeres' next move remains front and centre. He's been linked with the Gunners and the Red Devils. Manchester City have already landed three new faces as Pep Guardiola reacts to a poor season whilst Chelsea were unsuccessful in pursuing some of their targets as the two teams prepare for the Club World Cup. Spurs have launched a £70million bid to hijack Man United's move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. The north Londoners' offer is worth £65million plus £5million in add-ons, £10million more than United's. As revealed by Mirror Football last week, new Spurs boss Thomas Frank wants to take 25-year-old Mbeumo with him to north London. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants to deliver the Cameroon international as a statement signing for Ange Postecoglu's successor. But United remain the preferred destination for Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford over the past season. We're back with all the latest - stay tuned as we bring you the news and the gossip!

Tottenham make Bryan Mbeumo transfer bid - worth much more than Man Utd offer

Manchester United have been leading the race to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer, but unable to agree a deal with the Bees, the door is open for new Spurs boss Thomas Frank to reunite with his star man Spurs have launched a £70million bid to hijack Manchester United's move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. ‌ But United remain the preferred destination for Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford over the past season. ‌ Frank wants to try and tempt him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the prospect of a reunion and Champions League football. The Dane worked with Mbeumo since his arrival at Brentford from Troyes in 2019. United have already made two bids for Mbeumo, the most recent of which was a £60million package worth £55million plus £5million in add-ons last week. Brentford refused to accept it, leaving the door open for Spurs to come in with what could now be a decisive offer. As things stand, it is unlikely United will pay more for Mbeumo than the £60million package they have already splashed out for their marquee signing, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. While that could yet change, Brentford feel they are within their rights to stick to their £70million valuation for Mbeumo who was outscored by just three players last season, Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland. Mbeumo's seven assists were also key in helping the west Londoners to a top-half finish. The area where United could yet maintain the edge is wages. The money on offer at Old Trafford is between £150,000-£175,000-a-week with bonuses taking Mbeumo's expected package to £200,000-a-week. ‌ Spurs would have to break their strict wage structure to match that, with Mbeumo expected to earn around £130,000-£140,000-a-week. Bonuses would still see it fall short of the cash he would pick up at United. Mbeumo's superb form last season for Brentford ended fears that the club would struggle after seeing star striker Ivan Toney leave for Saudi Arabia on Transfer deadline day a year ago. Mbeumo has a year left on his contract with an option for an extra year. But the Bees are resigned to the fact that he feels he has reached the end of his time at the GTech Stadium and is ready to move on.
