Crystal Palace vs UEFA: CAS Hearing On Dual Ownership Set For August 8
Last Updated: Crystal Palace's appeal against UEFA's decision to relegate them to the Europa Conference League will be heard by CAS on August 8. A closed-door hearing in the legal dispute between Crystal Palace and UEFA, involving Nottingham Forest and Olympique Lyonnais, has been scheduled for August 8, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed on Wednesday. The case revolves around UEFA's decision to relegate Palace to the UEFA Europa Conference League, while allowing Lyon to compete in the Europa League, due to concerns over multi-club ownership. Palace Penalised Over Textor's Dual Ownership The controversy stems from John Textor, the American businessman with stakes in both Crystal Palace and Lyon. UEFA ruled that, as of March 1, Textor exercised 'control or influence" over both clubs—something that breaches UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, which prohibit clubs under common influence from participating in the same European competition. Though Textor has since agreed to sell his Palace shares to Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, UEFA based its decision on the ownership structure at the end of the 2023–24 season, when both clubs secured European qualification. Unhappy with UEFA's ruling, Crystal Palace appealed the decision, and the CAS has now confirmed that the case will be heard next month. Club chairman Steve Parish expressed optimism regarding Palace's legal position during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast. 'We are still fighting. There's an appeal process, so we go to CAS, and we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments," said Parish. 'We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John [Textor] didn't have decisive influence over the club. We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt—because it's a fact." If Palace's appeal fails, Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, are set to replace them in the Europa League. While no ruling is expected on the day of the hearing, a final decision is anticipated by August 11, just days before the start of European qualifying rounds. Manchester United Target PSG's Donnarumma As Potential Onana Replacement: Report
Last Updated: Manchester United are eyeing PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma as a potential goalkeeper addition. Nick Pope is also on their shortlist as a short-term option. Not a day goes by without Manchester United being linked to a high-profile name during the transfer window. The latest to emerge is Gianluigi Donnarumma, Paris Saint-Germain's first-choice goalkeeper and a mainstay for the Italian national team. So far this summer, the Red Devils have added Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon to their ranks. But with the transfer window still open, INEOS are reportedly pushing for three more additions: a striker, a defensive midfielder, and a goalkeeper. Among the names under serious consideration for the goalkeeper role is Donnarumma, 26, who has established himself as one of the world's top shot-stoppers. United are not only seeking competition for André Onana, but are also open to a possible long-term replacement. According to The Sun, Donnarumma has emerged as a priority target, though the Italian's price tag could reach €60 million, even with his contract at PSG set to expire in 2026. Interest from several top European clubs could further complicate any potential move. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has also weighed in, revealing that no formal contact has been made between United and Donnarumma's camp at this stage. While the club remains in the market for a goalkeeper, Romano emphasized that United are unwilling to be drawn into a bidding war, and will only proceed if the deal is financially viable. PSG Open to Selling? With contract extension talks stalling in Paris, PSG are reportedly open to selling Donnarumma to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 2026. As speculation builds, Manchester United appear to be monitoring the situation closely. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
